A unified account system will be implemented later this year with the launch of the Wii U. Eventually this same account system will be made compatible with Nintendo 3DS systems. At this time we have no additional details to offer and nothing to indicate how or if this will work outside the United States and Canada. In the meantime, if the system has a problem, taking it to an Authorized Service Center will maintain the Nintendo eShop account. If the system is stolen, we can transfer the account to a new system once we are provided with a valid police report. NoC customer service member, David Marshall

From that Nintendo blog.

Oh, yeah, and some bad news for us Latin American suckers:

Of course, you asked this question because of the upcoming launch of New Super Mario Bros. 2 in retail and digital formats. What you need to know is that the digital format will only be available in the United States and Canada. We have nothing to announce regarding Latin American availability.

It's good to have actual confirmation, rather than the assumptions people made prior.

But it's good. Seems like they're slowly getting their shit together.

I wonder if they will have a way to tie previously downloaded games to an account once this system gets put in place.

awesome news!

was just saying, this was what i needed to go digital - well, this and sales prices. still, better late than never, nintendo...can't wait till its implemented.

But in all seriousness, good news. Now I have no problems with buying retail 3DS titles digitally. Wonder if this bodes well for a potential unified Virtual Console? (Probably not.)

That reminds me, I have all these Nintendo bucks for the Wii, that were bought for me as a gift. I never used them. IS this the same currency that is used for the Wii U or 3ds? I don't own either yet, but will likely pick both up at some point in the future.

Nope.

3DS shop uses actual money money iirc.

Good news about the unified stuff, but do you need to contact an Authorized Service Center to transfer the account if it gets broken or you want to sell it? The best thing would be to have it all tied to just a login/password.

EDIT: Unless that is for the 3DS only, but still.

Unless they are Japan region points, they will only work on Wii/DSi.

Oh? Fuck Nintendo and my local eShop.

Let me go buy some digital pre-paid cards and use them on the NA eShop. I'll even get some Club Nintendo coins!

Well, we can do it right now, and I don't see them changing this.

Well, all of the games we can buy from the US eShop right now are also available through our local eShops, so maybe there's no "lock" in place for them.

How about the games I downloaded on the Wii?
Will I be able to transfer those onto the Wii U?

Yep. Nintendo confirmed it during E3. It said that it's working on a transfer system, but I imagine it has to be done with an SD card.

Amen to that, but I couldn't be bothered going to the police station to get a report done for Nintendo.

They even said saves would transfer over too. Really sucks that they couldn't have done that for DSiWare transferred to a 3DS.

That's good to hear. Although, the only Wii game save data I really care about are from Monster Hunter Tri, DKC Returns and Smash Bros. Brawl. I didn't know that the 3DS doesn't save your DSi data. That does suck.

finally...

i might purchase some new VC games when this is implemented.

club nintendo and your eshop account should be one and the same.
Games compatible with cross platform play should only require one purchase.

Why should I not be able to play GB games on Wii/WiiU? or SNES games on 3DS?

Do this properly nintendo and I might buy a 3DS and a WiiU....

Can I use the same account on 2 separate 3DS's?

If so I might keep my original 3DS to use outside the house, and just keep the XL for inside only.

Awesome news, maybe this will mean the VC will be cross plat between Wii U and 3DS when possible (NES, SNES, GB, etc).

At the very least I hope they at least start selling all the Wii VC NES, and SNES and Sega games on the 3DS.

I haven't really bought any on the Wii, but I would buy some of the classics to play on a portable system.

I have been wondering this myself, as I still have like $40 in Wii shop points.

What Reggie has been quoted as saying (GTTV interview I believe) is that you will be able to transfer your downloaded Wii games to Wii U. So what I am planning on doing is spending the rest of my points on some good VC games and transferring them over to Wii U after.
