La-Mulana remake (PC) releasing July 13th on Playism

Playism (and La-Mulana) launched!
(Playism's server status is a little rocky right now, but it should even out over the day)

Direct link to the store page

Quick summary:
- Price: $14.99
- DRM-Free
- Only accepts Paypal, currently. Google Checkout and Amazon Payments will likely be supported sometime in the future.
- Warning (Probably not relevant anymore, since there's no longer a launch overload on the servers): If you complete your purchase, but the post-Paypal page is a 500 error, BEFORE DOING ANYTHING, check your "My Account" section on the Playism site to see if La-Mulana is in the Downloads section, as the purchase may have still gone through. Refreshing the page, or going through checkout again may result in a duplicate purchase being made, in which case, be sure to e-mail Playism support for a refund.
- Troubleshooting: In-game, if you're experiencing freeze-ups when accessing the menu, either: re-download the install archive, right-click the game icon and choose "Run as Administrator," or install it outside of the Program Files directory (Since Windows sometimes loves to protect that directory). Not really relevant anymore, since the latest patch (1.1.1.1) switched the save game directory to the Documents and Settings folder, which should mean that UAC should no longer interfere with it.

Nigoro just released a video titled "The History of La-Mulana," revealing that the release date for the remake will be next week, July 13th. It'll coincide with the Western launch of the Playism service, a site that apparently focuses on doujin games and indie games.

Siliconera article on Playism

Hey guys! I guess I should go ahead and out myself. ;)

I actually work for the PLAYISM project at Active Gaming Media.
La-Mulana has been completely dominating my life for the past month or so! :)

Regarding some of your questions, a lot of them will be answered when(if) sites start picking up our press releases so no harm letting you know here.

The price for La-Mulana will be $14.99!

There will be no DRM for La-Mulana and hopefully for the majority of the Japanese games we bring over. It's hard to promise the same when it comes to other Japanese developers but we are doing our best to convince them.

About Steam....Don't want to say much but yeah if only it were as easy as everyone thinks. :(

Is this also by the guy who made Spelunky or am I an ignorant foo?

Amazing art, amazing trailer, and amazing graphics/atmosphere.

But why not just on Steam? :(

They said they hoped they can release it on Steam.

So either they got bad news or are still waiting. It's not a horrible idea to release the game and generate a bunch of hype, reviews, etc. to get Valve's attention.

It also is probably the best way to help this Playsim site get some attention in the West.

Is Playism DRM-free?

Very important question. Also, does this mean we'll see more doujin games in the West? Will I finally see a proper release of Melty Blood AACC? One can dream...

will get. Hope they release it on Steam so they can get some real money.

From the Playism article:

AGM are providing localization services at minimal cost — or in some cases, no cost — to developers in exchange for timed exclusivity to the Playism service. Negotiations leave room for other arrangements on a case-by-case basis, too.

So most likely it will get a Steam release at a later date.

$14.99, and no DRM. Sounds like a fine deal!

What kind of game is this? Just a regular platformer?

It's open in the same way as metroidvania games, but it's much more puzzle-focused rather than being a straight action game.

Some of the puzzles in the original game are incredibly obtuse, but I believe the remake redresses the balance so it's a little less confusing, and a little more action-y

mmm, it's a "metroidvania?"

If I remember correctly though, it was preeety darn hard.

I'd probably cite it as a bit similar to Fez. A bit more structured in the end, although you won't fully understand *how* it's structured until quite late on.

I'm very interested to see how they've changed it; I completed the free original version, but a walkthrough was practically essential to do so; some of the clues were extremely obscure. A bit of careful work on the cluing would go a long way.

Can anybody read the bronze logo on the upper right of Playism's line up? It's right next to yume nikki's logo. The top line is in katakana and the bottom hiragana, it looks like ポッワとじたち。Cannot find a indie by that name so I guess I am unable to make out the characters given the smaller size. Help would be appreciated, 有難う御座います。

Keep in mind that it started life as a WiiWare game--WiiWare games only have 64MB RAM to work with and the file size is capped at around 40MB, so they'd have to be spectacularly inept in order for the PC port to run poorly on any PC.

Yeah we didn't have time to put together an English logo for that game. Sorry! m(_ _)m

It is ポックのともだち or Pock's Friend.
It is a simple and short point and click adventure game.

No DRM? +1 sale, good sir. Easy to re download content?

Playism? Wasn't that one of the services Q.U.B.E launched on while it was waiting on Steam?

Would be willing to bet that the difficulty getting on Steam would have something to do with the Summer Sale starting the day before.

Yeah, as the SE article said, they intend to concentrate on bringing doujin games to the US and indie games to Japan. Q.U.B.E. was one of those indie titles that was released on the Japanese store.

I totally agree about the walkthrough. Playing it blind was ridiculous.

New update from Nigoro:

http://la-mulana.com/en/blog/about-playism.html

Well today, let’s talk about Playism, the platform of PC version.
We know many people think “Why isn’t it Steam?”
But, it’s difficult for us to tie up with Steam.
Because it is a trouble for us to communicate with Steam in English.
We don’t want to delay the release because of it.

And more, Playism’s principles is “Wanna enliven Japanese indie games.”
Their principles are same as ours.
If things go well, Playism may negotiate with Steam or other platforms, and may possibly get a offer of porting to major platforms.

We think the PC version will be released on other platforms someday.
However, we will release our games on Playism first.
Please enjoy not only our game but also other Japanese indie games.

By the way, we uploaded three more promotional videos that were made for Japanese WiiWare version, and translate them into English.
Festival!
