ONM: "loads of third party stuff coming" for Wii U

Gummb

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about Rayman Legends Wii U.
Adding to the discorse surrounding Nintendo's poor E3, Chandra Nair, Official Nintendo Magazine's Editor-in-Chief had this to say about his favorite part -

“It’s actually a moment I cant talk about, because my favourite bit of E3 was finding out about all the cool third party stuff that’s coming for the Wii U, which they decided not to talk about, which was awesome. So I just want to say yeah, there’s loads of third party stuff coming which I reckon we might see at Gamescom, or we might see at TGS, but its coming. That was my favourite bit because everyone was saying “No one’s bringing out anything for Wii U”, and I saw some cool things.”

By far the largest criticism gamers have had of the WiiU is its lack of AAA software, especially from third parties. Nintendo has announced that it will be releasing information about 2013 WiiU software "this fall." For Japan, Nintendo confirmed in its investors meeting that new announcements will be made in September. TGS, held in September, would be ideal. Considering Nintendo rarely attends, however, expect them to hold their own individual show for the occasion.

Nintendo had been heavily criticized for not including blockbuster hits Call of Duty and Madden into its WiiU plans, criticisms that were partially silenced as new information was revealed. Both titles, Activision's new Black Ops II, and EA's Madden are in development for the Wii U. In fact, EA, despite only showing off Mass Effect 3 for the Wii U at E3, has restated its support for the Wii U. EA's Frank Gibeau announced that they have a "couple more" Wii U titles to announce. Adding even more confusion surrounding E3, GameTrailers' Shane Shatterfield, after proclaiming his confidence in Wii U software on Invisible Walls, later realized that a game he had known about for the Wii U for some time "was never announced" at E3. It is now clear that we do not know the extent of software that will be available for the Wii U come launch and well into 2013. Nintendo of America's President Reggie Fils-Aime told IGN that they are currently planning software for Wii U's second holiday season stating that "for that active gamer who's looking to buy something brand new on a regular basis, there's going to be a lot there."

The hard-hitting question, however, is whether or not these titles will be exclusive or not. Nintendo is well aware of the problems they face with third parties. Regarding this exact topic at Nintendo's 71st shareholder's meeting, Iwata had this to say: "We think it very important to make several hits from the third-party software publishers within the first year from the release of the platform, while offering Nintendo software seamlessly. In order to achieve this goal, we have shared information about the new hardware with the software publishers earlier than we did previously and built a cooperative structure, and we are developing several titles in collaboration with these publishers. I cannot talk in detail about the names of the titles, or with which publishers we are currently collaborating, because we have not announced this information yet, but what we are aiming for with the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U is, platforms which have much more software and a wider variety of software than the former Nintendo DS or Wii. Therefore, we are thinking of creating an environment where software from other companies will become hits. Please understand that Nintendo is prepared to invest in order to make this a reality."

We now know that Nintendo has partnered with Traveller's Tales and Platinum Games to make Lego City Stories and Project P-100. Perhaps Iwata will be willing to share with us information regarding more partnerships in September.

Begin speculation folks!

(how's that for my first topic?)

The big question is are these third party games exclusive or not?

A bunch of additional SKUs seems redundant at this point, but ground up (probably smaller scale) exclusives are what's going to make the system attractive I think. I imagine that's actually more likely too.

Not suprised

after the last nintendo direct where they unleashed many unknown games like layton 5, fire emblem

they always hold back

Probably not.

Well we know Japanese stuff is coming.

I wouldn't get hopes up too much or anything though.

Best case scenario is confirmation of 2013 PS360 stuff.

For all the speculation on third-party games, we know the Wii U will sell because of the strength of Nintendo's core games.

Even if third-party investment is slow to start with, new games will pick up as the console sells well on the back of Mario et al. Look at the 3DS vs the Vita - the Vita is more powerful, but very little is coming out on it because of dismal sales figures.

Weirdo.

even if you look at just the launch lineup, very few games are ports maybe 10 percent

then its like 45, 45 exclusive, multiplat
which is pretty good

Nintendo probably just signed a deal with the masterminds behind Myth Makers: Orbs of Doom.

See you in the clearance bin, mothafuckas.

I keep hearing this but all i keep seeing is Batman and Assassins. Exactly how close to release do you wait to drop info like lineup, pricing and other info? 2 months? 1 week?

E3 was really just focused on games coming in 2012. I'm sure 2013 will be a better year, we just haven't seen anything yet.

That's the thing. Nintendo is only offering a 2D Mario at launch. How well that will do is still up in the air. They just had one on the Wii, followed by Donkey Kong and Kirby. Now there is another 2D Mario coming on the 3DS. At some point fatigue has to set in. The question is will it happen with the 3DS game or the Wii U game. I don't see both doing extremely well to be honest. That's a lot of 2D Mario and platformers in general very close together. Then there is also Rayman Legends that simply looks better then Mario Wii U (though it might not control better).

More announcements are good but I rather wait to actual titles are named before I get excited. Also that Black Ops 2 info is just a rumor I believe. Nothing official has been said. Likely to come but still no confirmation at all. Also to hell with any year old ports.

It's pretty shocking that ONM would defend the Wii U like this.

Luckily, I have other sources included to support ONM's claim.

In fact, if people have any questions concerning when information will be coming (september), the validity of ONM's claim (see other sources), or Nintendo's history concerning the topic (Reggie and Iwata), see the OP.

I'd be fine with just a few third party games for the whole Wii U cycle. I don't buy Nintendo platforms for third party games. They are just a bonus.

We know how well it will do.........its a 20 million seller........

fatigue only works on non nintendo franchises it seems. You should know that over the years.........

you have mario and pikmin at launch. The 3ds had pilot wings and nintendogs and the 3ds is number 1 now.

Not alot has to happen

Loads of third party ports is more like it.

Ubisoft has already shown off their original content. I doubt EA, Activision, etc., will put in serious effort.

There is new a Call of Duty every single year, selling millions and millions. Having two 2D Marios on a home console in 3(?) years is not going to cause fatigue. I don't think that's going to be an issue. Not everyone will have both a 3DS and a Wii U either.

At this point we are not talking about exclusives, of course.
But I'm starting to understand how they will proceed this gen regarding annoucements: Like for the 3DS, and even further than the Wii, Nintendo Direct's and two/three months ahead announcements will be the rule.

Iwata explained this the most recent Q/A with the japanese investors: While playing/buying what's just released, you are discovering what's next.
This made them a poor E3 and summer, but at least this is not unusual to have a poor summer of news. Not unusual too, to see a hardware constructor handling some 3rd parties announcement just before a system release.

For the moment I just wait for the TGS, and hope that the second software wave will be more february than late march 2013, with noticable digital goodies following the launch.

Thread title should be: "ONM: "loads of third party ports coming" for Wii U in 2012/2013"

Once much more powerful the X720/PS4 comes out, will be another story.

Hmmmmmmm I wonder if Final Fantasy XIII or XIII-2 will get on wii u :o

I was kinda hoping for a mass effect trilogy pack for Wii u being announced with mass effect 3 when they talked about it at E3

Lol did anyone think that call of duty wasn't coming to wii u, it'll probably be the best selling game at launch if its blops 2

We don't know that. See bottom of OP. Iwata could announce more partnerships with 3rd parties, like the ones that created Lego City Stories and Project P-100.

Is it going to be loads of shovelware crap like on Wii or are these going to be games we're going to enjoy playing.

Why should they be? These questions about exclusives are completely unfair considering the 3rd party exclusives is pretty much dead. The PS4/720 will share all the same 3rd party games as well. The fact that Wii U even has as many exclusives announced as it does from 3rd parties is a miracle.

Like previous consoles,

The Wii-U will have fantastic first party titles that will carry the sales and subpar third party ones, especially once the "next gen" Sony/MS boxes come out

Does anyone really think this will be different this gen?

It really comes down to their frst party library, which lucky for them has a massive following

I can imagine capcom having tons of stuff in the works for the wii u considering the stuff they said last year about supporting the system but besides that i can't see that many games coming to the wii u besides the obvious current gen ports of cod, madden, nfs, and etc. but i can't say i care too much though because it's pretty much a given that this will receive a ton of support from nintendo and nintendo games are the reason i plan on buying this in the first place.

Third party exclusives are a dying breed.

3rd parties will invest in 1 or 2 games utilizing the tablet screen like they did with Wii. If they dont get their money they'll abandon and do the usual Rabbids and Dance games.
