Decent Dubs of Anime?

Dubbed anime is a mix bag some what, but I think a lot of dislike for it comes from the fact that most of the time dubs aren't exactly like the original, therefore those who are purists, so to speak, dislike it for it's difference from the original. People also dislike the voices in some of these anime and feel they aren't quality (I do agree this occurs in some)

Another big part of dislike of dubs is that the way they are introduced outside of Japan, a lot of them get censored and 4Kids has done some pretty ridiculous censoring like in Sonic X. I wasn't entirely sure why until I saw a video of Dan Green(Voice actor for Yugi) commented on this in a video on youtube, but I am unable to locate it. I did however find a video in which Eric Stuart (voice actor of Kaiba and James from Pokemon) did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HoRnGMuGs0&t=3m23s

Apparently it's not so much 4Kids fault at all the censoring, is that for it to be broadcasted in America on a Saturday morning cartoon block, there are rules. Of course that doesn't explain everything like some of the rewritten plots, but it is indeed a big part. Most dubbed anime that people enjoy aren't tied down by these regulations, which is understandable.

Anyways, what are some decent dubbed anime in your opinion? What exactly makes a dubbed version great? What exactly makes a dubbed version bad? I'd say that I myself like the voices some of the 4Kids actors used quite a bit, but I'm not necessarily fond of strange censor edits like in Sonic X.

If I were to name some decent dubs, this would be my list, but I may be forgetting some.

Pokemon (Original voice cast)
Yu-Gi-Oh! & 5D's
Dragon Ball Z Funimation (Amazing Voice Actors, Amazing OST)
Digimon
Naruto (I watch subbed, but I do prefer most of the voices in this more)

I'll also point out that I do like the voices in Sonic X.

Deadman Wonderland is pretty good it fits well for most of the characters and if someone annoys you get used to it and might even change your mind.

In my opinion the best english dubbed anime is Green Legend Ran. Something about it stands out. The lipsyncing fits, the dialogue doesn't feel broken, and the voice acting is pretty damn good.

perfect.

Ranma 1/2
El Hazard
Tenchi Muyo
Nightwarriors
Fatal Fury The Motion Picture
Cowboy Bebop
Slayers
DBZ - until Frieza with the original ocean dub
Robotech - special case

I started watching Neon Genesis on VHS so I had no choice. With that said, I loved the cast.
I watched this subbed on VHS. My friend paid $40 per two episode tape for subbed tapes. The cost of being an anime fan is generally so much lower now.

Trigun. As far as I'm concerned JYB is the only voice for Vash.

I also still prefer the Evangelion dub. Maybe it's because that's where I started from but I find it hard to go back to the regular VA.

Bacanno and Durara!! aren't bad. It's not often that anime dubs get local color right. I still have problems with kansai dialect being interpreted as a southern dialect, but the mixture of chicago and new york accents work pretty nicely in Bacanno.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC has a very good dub, as does Shiki. Unfortunately, most dubs I've tried to watch in the past few years have been abhorrent. I REALLY liked GunXSword when I watched it in japanese and I couldn't make it through the first episode in english the dub was so bad. It's pretty shocking at how bad Madoka's dub turned out as well. That show could have been a real money maker in the states and I haven't met one single person who would ever tolerate such an awful translation script.

I remember outlaw star's dub being pretty good when I was a kid, but upon re-watching it, it's pretty awful.

Ranma 1/2

This I can get behind. I somehow stumbled over a couple of mp3s from some holiday-promo CD, where the japanese VAs sang various songs. Despite never seeing the series in japanese, I could still make out every single character, and it made me realize just how perfectly the english VA's nailed the characters.

Kunos VA sucks from season 5 and beyond though.

This right here.

I would also add Full Metal Panic, Eureka Seven, Tenchi Muyo(aside from Ayeka's voice), and Samurai Champloo.

Also would add Bible Black.

I think the only tolerable dub voice in Tenchi Muyo is Ryoko. Ugh. I can't stand Tenchi's voice. It's like some garbled up dying cat or something. Love the series regardless.

Full Metal Alchemist has a pretty good dub as well.

I got reminded more of some I liked/watched from viewing posts in this thread. Go ahead and add

Inuyasha
Cowboy Bebop
Big O
Trigun
FLCL
Tenchi Muyo (I think?)

to my list.

I also recall liking YuYu Hakusho's dub as well, but I never got to finish the series as it was never fully released on Toonami and stopped in the middle of the tournament. I need to finish the series off as I did like it.

This actually has to be the oldest thing in my possession that i still have, i still remember after all the evenings waiting patiently for DBZ to start on RTL II, then taking holiday in Germany 10 years ago and seeing this in the shop O_O, i basically refused to leave the shop without making my parents buy this for me, i must have been 13 at the time i guess, still sounds awesome, the OST that is <3

Dragonball Z gets my vote thanks to the Bruce Faulconer soundtrack.

The Big O
Cowboy Bebop
Dragon Ball Z (Ocean Group)
Gundam Wing

What soundtrack does the Ocean Group dub use? I recall prefering some of the voices (Krillin and possibly Vegeta), but I like Funimation's Goku a lot more.

I think the only tolerable dub voice in Tenchi Muyo is Ryoko. Ugh. I can't stand Tenchi's voice. It's like some garbled up dying cat or something. Love the series regardless.

Full Metal Alchemist has a pretty good dub as well.

I thought the rest were fine. Problem with Ayeka in particular is she sounds like an old grandma.

FMA is a very solid choice as well.

I really liked the Fullmetal Alchemist dub. I haven't seem FMA: Brotherhood much though.

I remember I also enjoyed the Slayers dub very much.

Everything else I can think of has been said.

I think I'm one of the few people on Earth who likes the dub of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann more than the original Japanese.

Kyle Hebert, Sam Riegel and Jamieson Price as Kamina, Viral and Lordgenome are legendary.
