Yes. I want some Walkie Talkies! How much fun would that be! Especially the ones with the morse code setting. I'm gonna buy some and I'm VERY excited.

I don't know what to buy though. When I was young in the 90s I'd look at the Best Buy Sunday advertisement from the newspaper and ogle the impossibly expensive 200$ Motorola SERIOUS BUSINESS Walkie Talkies. Well now that I'm an adult with money what better time is there to live out my childhood dreams.

My friend lives about ~2 Miles away. Thats my problem. I know that even though all the Walkie Talkies on Amazon tout a "5 mile distance" [some even say 35 miles] I know that means perfect line of sight from mountain top to mountain top. Not residential area.

So ARE there walkie talkies that could travel this far that aren't terribly expensive? Any other even more fun solutions to my problem? Does anyone even use Walkie Talkies anymore since we all have mobile computers?

Thanks!

I think I remember messing with one my friend had a while back.

I remember there was surprisingly a good amount of people there on the bandwidths messing around and talking like doofuses

If you want, for your birthday, I'll give you a walkie talkie, and if you're good, you'll get the other one during the holidays.

I'm not giving any walkie talkies

I've got some experience and knowledge programming Motorola LMRs (land mobile radios, i.e. walkie talkies), like XTS 3000s.
But that is more to set up trunking systems and base stations at repeater sites and stuff. Not anything that would benefit you I guess, unless you are gonna be hanging out in the mountains of Afghanistan or anything

My wife and I are going to Costa Rica for a couple weeks with my in laws. We are renting two cars and are getting some cheap walkie talkies to communicate between vehicles without our cell phones.

Brings back memories of when I was a child. My parents did that all the time. Cells phoned changed so much.

If you want to lear morse code anyway just get an amature radio cert and some 2 meter walkie talkies, those should do two miles no problem.

I use a Motorola Saber with a temple/tranducer PTT throat mic. Running at 5 Watts, VHF.

The Saber cost me $45 bucks. And you really don't need the throat mic.

Look at eBay for a set.

Just try not to go into the channels above 9. Unless you want to mess with stores with wireless stuff, like Old Navy, Gap, WalMart, Best Buy, drive thrus, etc.

Never mess with the emergency channels.
