Modern horror movies that avoid most horror cliches

I stopped watching horror movies some time ago but I want to catch up.

I don't want the usual stuff though. Like a heroine walks back, someone catches her from behind, she screams but hey, this is just her friend! Is there a modern horror movie that avoids all (ok, most) horror cliches, tired tricks and so on?

Didn't watch it, but maybe Cabin in the Woods?

Also, American Psycho.

I guess the first of the lost footage style films would have been pretty original. What would that have been, the blair witch project maybe?

Good question, but Im not a big horror fan so I can't really distinguish what people consider a cliche versus a trope in this genre.

What about Insidious?

Despite what many seem to say (likely do to its success and egotistical marketing), Paranormal Activity was pretty unique. More of a Haunted House film than horror and had no reliance whatsoever on poor CGI. All effects are legit.

I never saw it, thanks.

Yeah, no kidding. The subtle effects made the film genuinely unsettling.

The first half of Insidious is fucking fantastic. What the hell happened to the rest of it, I do not know.

I must be wired wrong, because I thought the exact opposite. Was bored up until a certain point. But I yawned through all of the Paranormal Activity films as well, so maybe it's just that brand of horror not being scary to me. Also watched one from this year called The Pact that was supposed to scare me like nothing else, and it was like watching paint dry. But it seems to be me, most people find these movies scary. I dunno.

This is a good one.

Also, The Descent has been copied a bunch since it came out but I think it did a lot of things first. It's also a really, really good modern horror movie, which is pretty rare these days.

Was just about to post the Descent.

Definitely a unique horror movie that sticks with you, even now after it's been 7 or so years since it's release.

I would definitely agree with Descent... although I wouldn't say it did a lot of things first. It is very similar to Alien in structure, even delaying the first sight of the "creatures" for like half the movie. If you enjoy Alien than you would definitely enjoy The Descent. I haven't seen the sequel though.

this straddles a line between torture porn and horror, but i really enjoyed this film. there's a reason i would recommend this to somebody but i honestly don't even want to tip my hat as to what it is for fear it might ruin it for someone.

english name "them". great film, far superior to the similar american film "the strangers".

uses the found-footage aspect in a fairly intelligent manner. suffers from some production quality but for being an indie film, it succeeds fairly well with the scares and creep factor. highly recommended for silent hill fans.

Alien is my favourite horror film.

FUCK YES, IT SEEMS I'M IN FOR A TREAT.

The Descent has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. Great pick.

I'll mention this one too:

It's a little bit slow at the beginning but it's worth checking it out.

The Descent is an amazing movie. I even liked the sequel.

REC is also good. The sequel is OK. And the third on is just horrible. AVOID

Subscribing to this thread. The Woman and Ils sound interesting. Already seen the rest...

I just remembered one called The Baby's Room, it's a mexican horror movie. I seem to recall that it was pretty decent.

Antichrist is excellent. The Descent is fantastic too. For a movie that completely subverts the cliches of a slasher film, I would say watch Funny Games.

Some other horror movies I would recommend are The Mist (b&w version) and Slither.

I liked Ils a lot better than The Strangers but the ending was blah. Aside from that good movie.

The third one is superior to the sequel tbh. REC 2 started OK but it all went downhill during the second half of the movie and that ending.. UGH. REC 3 doesn't take itself too seriously and that's why I like it better, tbh. I even liked the comedy bits.

Eden Lake is an urban/real life horror that chilled me like no other. It's about class warfare in the uk, the growing rise of fear of our youth and also a really nice, down and dirty "woman terrorised in the woods" horror.
