Zineth: Tribes + Jet Set Radio = WHOA

So I am just now become aware of Zineth, a proof of concept game done in Unity by some aspiring young developers who call themselves Arcane Kids. I'm currently playing the demo and really enjoying the speed and JSR-like atmosphere of the whole thing. It's got a ways to go in terms of polish, but the underlying idea is cool and the game is definitely worth a try. It's a svelte 40MB download, available for Mac and Windows.

Yeah, the music kind of sucks, but the large levels, grinding, and visuals click. The rewind mechanic also seems superfluous...

My fucking eyes. A graphics filter doesnt equate to covering the art design fellahs. Read up on colour theory, palette matching and more, will do you some damn good in the long run.

The music sounds like a poor man's squarepusher. The game itself doesn't seem to do much outside of shouting glaring neon colours at you.

Watching that just gave me a headache. Between the music and how vibrant
?
everything was, it fucked me up.
Maybe I'm getting old or something.

Um, it looks like an endless runner type thing, how does that make it anything like Tribes (JSR is stretching it too)?

I had seen the game before but it totally didn't come to mind compared to the title's implied awesomeness...

There are some really wide open areas in the game, and the way you have to build and maintain speed feels a bit like skiing. Apart from that, I admit that it's not a great comparison.

man, i must be getting old. the music, i cant make head nor tail of it.

the character seems like a mutated version of vocaloid miku hatsune.

Having played a betaest version, trust me that really shines when you're out exploring.

I dunno, I think its really fun with some super neat visuals. Its gotten me checking my twitter feed more often at the very least. I agree though that the music kinda sucks (and its even worse when it just changes tracks with no attempt at a transition).

The way you need to use momentum and skate around the environment is very reminiscent of tracking down graffiti souls in JSR Future. I dont see how anyone could deny this.

Between exploring the enviroment, the checkpoint race missions, checking my twitter feed, fiddling with the phone minigame, and trying to figure out my main objective of getting to the moon I've really been enjoying the game.

This game assaulted my eyes and ears, which is a shame because the actual game part looked alright.

But seriously, I couldn't stand looking at this long enough to play it.

Keep in mind that the small team is insisting that the current iteration is the "Narbacular Drop" to a potential "Portal." There's certainly room for improvement, but goodness knows the world needs more wacky, creative games like this.

If they keep making improvements, I can see myself funding these guys on Kick starter.

So if this team gets picked up by a big developer/publisher then it has some good potential? Ok.

But yeah, I agree that we need some strange and unique games to get some of the stagnation in the industry out.

Maybe not even that, just an actual budget and a clean slate with the intention of making it into a more polished, complete product. There's still a ton of potential there.
