Recently I crafted this playlist for people that were constantly coming into Gaf-Hop confessing that they felt disillusioned with the current state of hip-hop and or they felt as though the sounds they grew to love were indeed dead. Well, as a guy that is obsessed with hip-hop, and a bunch other genres as well, I'm going to do my best to get these people back into it. The first step I've taken is to craft this massive youtube sampler of everything, which I advise to play in shuffle. It's long because it's a statement for how much people are missing.

Also here are some albums (most being free) from 2012 people should check out:

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Downtempo boom bap that brings a real raw soulful vibe to the plate

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Raw NY gangsta rap wit a debonair flair

Sample Song
Sounds Like – West coast take on boom bap with free-fire Doom-isms

Sample Song
Bonus: Needledrop Review
Sounds like-Heem’s getting back to his roots, humorous and satirical raps over Indian influenced boom-bap.

Sample Song
Sounds Like- The pure rhyming aesthetics of say an Illmatic combined with a modern multi- coastal freshness

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Lupe Fiasco

Sample Song
Sounds Like – A top tier flower letting loose over raw beats with a spontaneity reminiscent of Asher Roth in Foie Gras

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Two of the best modern-day spitters rapping over soulful 9th Wonder production, it’s only this far down to avoid stannery claims.

Sample Song
Sounds Like – A boom bap legend imitating kung-fu legends, subbing the punches and kicks for murderous bars.

Sample Song
Sounds Like – DJ Premier-esque beats featuring the few surviving ambassadors of boom-bap

Sample Song
Sounds Like – A compilation featuring the best underground rappers and producers you’ve been sleeping on

Sample Song
Sounds Like – A lost classic made in the dungeons of NY back in the mid-90s

Sample Song
Sounds like-An outcast early Three 6 Mafia member harbors a grudge that sends him to an even darker, yet equally trill space.

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Chilled out Vol.1 era Jay-Z

Needledrop Review
Sounds Like –Killer Mike embracing the Killer part of his name with prototypical ElP production, southern boom bap

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Abstract thought, both of a provocative and thoughtless nature spit over hype beats

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Picture your favorite backpack rapper visiting Methodman during his Tical session and making beats that were dabbled both in an experimental and electronic aesthetic to go along with it

Sample Song
Sounds Like – A rapper/producer/auteur, with a knack for crafting unique experimental/electronic beats

Sample Song
Sounds Like – See the Lushlife description, though more orchestral/big in sound

Sample Song
Sounds Like – A Lo-Fi revivalist gangsta-rap album that borrows from the old west-coast and southern trill shit

SHOUTOUTS TO THE GAF-HOP COMMUNITY!

...Spotify playlist in the works

They are too stuck in the 90s to reply to something in 2012. Either way, cool, didn't know you were doing this! Do hope some people check this out.

The Planet Asia and Himashu stuff are really good. I had never heard of Denzel Curry. I liked that. Thanks for the recommendations, I'll try some of the rest later.

There are no reasons to be stuck in the 90s. Plenty of good shit being released these days.
I missed some of those releases, so thanks again for the effort.

Another great 90's sounding album released this year

Professor @ Large

The new Roc Marciano album that's coming in November is going to be amazing as well.

Gonna update the OP with more albums given that a bunch of really recent releases need to be heard, might have to change the format a bit to compensate for the load and avoid making it look too busy...Also will be done with the Spotify playlist by the end of the night, but I'm currently off to see Blowfly.

Thanks for this. It's my favorite style of rap (or I guess music, in general) so it's nice to see some new stuff or some things I forgot to check out. Looking forward to the spotify playlist.

Ha, I did some work (producing) on Crook's Cashmere Killah.

Big ups to GAF peeping it out. Check it out if you haven't!

Shame the song we did "Ballads" didn't make the final cut, nevertheless, enjoy.

damn how did i miss this shit? excellent work as always des, subbing. gonna point every goon in hip-hop threads talkin bout how shit is dead/its all YMCMB etc etc here

I just recently downloaded that Joey Badass tape, that's some AOTY shit. Completely caught me off guard.

Btw: DL'd this a few days ago and imho it has that early 90 WC charm.

Hear ya Say

2013 List For Ya'll:

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Dark kingpin/Yakuza gangsta rap with slow brooding beats

Sample Song
Sounds Like –Some heydey smooth 90s shit, you know that shit Diggable Planets and Blackalicious was cooking up with effortless flows and soulful earthy vibes.

Sample Song
Sounds like - It's easy to label this as a weed rap album, but this is on some uber conscious, mind's eye realm shit at times.

Sample Song
Sounds Like – A highly poetic tribute to love itself

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Killah Priest seems almost divinely inspired on this forty track double album that succeeds in reaching beyond our shallow realm into the stratosphere of the cosmos.

Sample Song
Sounds Like – A raw spaghetti western featuring black outlaws blowing haze out in the desert

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Experimental occult rap, the closest thing in a while to reaching the depraved depths of the likes of Dalek and heydey Definitive Jux.

Sample Song
Sounds Like- That slow murky boom bap straight from the abyss

Sample Song
Needledrop Review
Sounds Like – Basically the super friends of boom bap this year, the hooks are charismatic and the verses hit hard like an overhand from Iron Mic.

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Conscious and deceptively dark, but still somehow chilled out and nonchalant about it all

Sample Song
Sounds Like – A rapper with incredible technical prowess also happens to be one of the best underground producers in the game and thus he showcases all of his skills on this casette album that samples everything from Doo-Wop to french New Wave cinema.

Sample Song
Needledrop Review
Sounds Like- It's mostly a traditional boom-bap affair, but what makes this album special is the lyricist. R.A.'s hunger is self-evident as he utters his first breath. He might be the most fiery tongued tin-foil rapper left.

Sample Song
Needledrop Review
Sounds Like – A compilation of b-sides and unreleased material from Madlib's high-pitched rapping alter ego Lord Quas. It's funky soulful boom-bap with hilarious lines and poetical reflections on the zeitgeist

Sample Song
Sounds Like – "The record is an unapologetic homage to old school hip-hop in its bare-bones production, lyrical themes, cover art and even the title." -Stones Throw

Sample Song
Sounds Like – Sweltering steam punk rap with abrasive electronic production and bullet-time raps.

Sample Song
Sounds like - Kool A.D. raps in such a nonchalant manner that it almost borders on being spoken-word, yet his wit and spot-on troll commentary is more than amusing enough to make up for it. Oh and the beats sound like the chilled out 90s soulful shit

...Really recent releases include KA's The Night's Gambit and Bishop Nehru's Strictly Flowz

Another group that has that 90's sound, and are definitely underrated, are the "Demigodz". Apathy, Celph Titled, Ryu (from Styles of Beyond/Fort Minor), and the rest are all pretty consistent lyrically. Their new album "Killmatic" has production from Dj Premier and Apathy. They have a couple of videos out. This one is called "Raiders Cap". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIF6An7ZRec
