Intel CEO Paul Otellini has reportedly told staff at the chipmaker that Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system is being released before it's ready. Bloomberg reports that sources who attending a private company event at Intel recently have revealed comments made by Otellini about Windows 8. Intel has been working closely with Microsoft for its latest operating system, but Otellini says Microsoft will make improvements to Windows 8 after it ships — something he reportedly believes is the right move, despite claiming it is being released before it's ready.

How Microsoft plans to deliver these updates isn't clear. The software maker will address the usual bug and feature fixes through its Windows Update system, but we're hearing from sources close to Microsoft that the company is readying an update to Windows 8 — codenamed Blue. The update, which ZDNet detailed last month, will be known as the next-generation of Windows, but it will likely arrive within the year rather than a typical three year schedule. We're told Microsoft is working to improve a number of the features in the Windows 8 Start Screen interface to remove a lot of the current dependencies on the desktop mode within Windows 8.

Otellini's comments come exactly a month before Microsoft plans to hold a Windows 8 launch party in October, combined with the launch of its Surface tablet. There is still concerns over the Windows 8 user interface on traditional laptop and desktop machines, but Microsoft's latest operating system looks set to generate some interest in Windows tablets. Windows 8 is already in the hands of OEMs, businesses, and developers, but we won't know the true reaction to its sweeping changes until it's available to the public next month. If Otellini is right about it being released before it's fully ready, Microsoft and its OEMs will need to act swiftly to counter any potential backfire and provide driver and software updates immediately.

We asked Microsoft about the reports of Otellini's comments and a company spokesperson tells us "Windows 8 is the most tested, reviewed and ready operating system in Microsoft’s history," and that Microsoft is "looking forward to making Windows 8 available to the world on October 26th"

the verge has a good record with ms news.....

I'm sure there will be interface refinements after launch, but from a stability and performance standpoint it's fairly solid, right?

Man. I will say this, I didn't like the idea but Windows 8 really is solid. I can see where it needs some updates here and there but I haven't seen any reason for the doom and gloom that props up many news stories about it.

As much as i love Windows 8, it does feel unfinished in some places.
Those things could easily be fixed through updates though.
This shouldn't be a reason to not upgrade though.

Windows 9 is when they will have things actually really usable. 8 is such a drastic change, it is going to be pretty messy before a service pack or two.

Although MS's best interest would be to follow the rest of the industry and update the OS each year like OSX is now doing, Android does, and iOS does.

nope, windows 9 is when they get rid of the metro stuff

I hope not, I'm using windows 8 now and I'm loving it. A few improvements could be made here or there, and of course there is a learning curve.

Other than that, I think its fantastic so far.

What a bizarre article. Any company in the OS business starts working on updates as soon as they hit RTM. If they (MS, Apple, any Unix/Linux based company) waited to fix every single bug before release, they'd never launch shit.

This is the same cyclical non-news as always. We've been hearing the same tune since the dawn of the internet.

I don't use Metro apps because there's no way to get a static clock on the screen. Sounds petty, but there it is.

Yep Windows 9 to Windows 8 will be like Windows 7 is to Windows Vista.

Windows 7 was a refined, more complete Vista with less elements of XP, so what you are saying is that Windows 9 will be a refined, more complete 8 with less elements of 7, in other words more metro and less desktop

Microsoft isn't going to sit on windows 8 till windows 9, there will be yearly or even quicker updates. But as far as stability issues, the OS is very solid.

if only they can do some sort.... service where they would PACKAGE if you will these updates and fixes. no, call it a pack. a service pack... yeah, I like the sound of that.

That's not really news. Metro is a tablet OS and has to keep up with the yearly update schedules of iOS and Android.

It's like people don't realize that RTM means "release to manufacturers". MS uses feedback from developers and OEMs to change things. If there are major architectural or security changes needed from RTM, then they make it into the retail build. If there aren't, then the RTM build becomes the retail build and updates are pushed out when they're ready. Larger changes to the interface and whatnot are held off until the first service pack when MS has had time to analyze usage statistics.

I'm going to lobby against Win8 in my place. We'll stay with Win7, thanks.

So long as you're not on XP, I'm not so sure Microsoft minds as much as one might expect.

There are so many users and enterprises still on XP, that MS still has a large market to sell an OS to.

Can't wait for this thing to succeed, since then MS will make W9 completely closed off, will veto a Steam app in favor of pushing GFWL, and completely kill the PC gaming market.

I will never use an OS that displays tons of info via huge tiles on my desktop, right in front of all my co workers/family to see as they walk by my desk.

Cant wait for a hack or a patch to completely disable the Metro.

This is from someone that actually likes the metro interface for tablets and phones, It has no place on my desktop though.

All MS OS's suck until SP1. Should be common knowledge for anyone using Windows PC's for almost 20 years.

This is pretty much true of any tech, software and hardware. Early adopters always get the shaft, small price to pay when you are living in the edge.

I installed it and after a day it decided that no files on any of the drives existed anymore. I could browse them in explorer but if I tried to read a CD, open a file, or even an application such as device manager I would get an error that the file didn't exist, when it blatantly did.

In the end I re-installed from scratch again, but I wouldn't trust it at the moment with important documents.
