Here is a link to Engadget article detailing the new action camera

Notable differences include:

  • 30 percent smaller
  • 25 percent lighter
  • 4x higher resolution capable of capturing 4k (Black Edition Only) * Note will only capture this at 15fps
  • WiFi included
  • 2x processor speed

The Black Edition also comes with a remote that can control up to 50 cameras at once from 600ft away, and is waterproof up to 10ft deep (retail @ 79.99) Black Edition pricing is set at $399.99
The Silver Edition is priced at $299.99 Limited to 11 MP stills 1080p @ 30fps
The White Edition is priced at $199.99 Limited to 5 MP stills assuming 1080p @ 30fps

Anyways there is a GoPro launch party happening in San Francisco right now, I'm sure more details will surface shortly

Lock if old etc..

I'll probably get a GoPro when the original model drops to like $50. They're cool cameras, but with such limited application unless you're an extreme sports junkie who also makes films.

I'm a huge snowboarder, and I have wanted a GoPro for the last 3 years.

The main thing that is always holding me back is the price point.

I understand its a Camera that can do alot more than any other cameras can, but at the price point that they are set for I always just feel I could get so much more CAMERA for that price.

Albeit I wouldnt be able to go snowboarding with a DSLR strapped to my head, but I think that most people at this point that have not pulled the trigger this is whats holding them back, it would be nice to see them continue to support the HD Hero 1 or 2 at a lower price point to help people who just want one to mess around get into one for a reasonable price.

Although I guess thats where the "White and Silver Edition" come in.

Definitely buying one for next bike season, always wanted to get some downhill mountain bike footage of myself. Outside of that, not sure what else I would use it for though. My brother got a GoPro last year for skydiving, and it works really well. Cool little camera.

So I got one of these for Christmas. Hero 3 Black edition. Spent the holiday in Cuba playing with it.

What a crazy little camera. I opted most of the time for the 2.7k / 30 FPS rez. Took it on a scooter trip into Varadero, took it on a few catamaran rides, took it snorkeling. Had my iPhone with me in a waterproof case as well so I was able to do the whole WiFi live preview thing (not quite live actually, it has about 5 seconds of delay, but perfect for setting up shots). I love the auto timelapse feature too, took some of that on the beach and at the bar as well. The quality is absurd. I had to convert everything to AIC just to edit it :)

Anyone else playing with one of these? I immediately ordered the naked frame, tripod and handlebar mounts when I got home. I wish I had shot more non-wide angle video just to compare, I left it on Wide the whole time... I suspect it's just going to crop to achieve the look as the lens is super wide... but with that much rez it hardly seems like it might matter.

The stills were surprisingly good, I'll post a couple here:

That underwater pic is amazing.

Currently a tie between the Hero 3 Black and the Drift Ghost for my first action/helmet cam. I'm looking for one for recording motorcycle rides and the like, so the Drift is coming out ahead for now.

I don't think you need to be an extreme sports junkie to enjoy something like this. I am enjoying shooting time lapses and photo bursts as well as the first person stuff.

i just got my hero 3 like a month ago only thing i really did was record myself playing ice hockey. could someone tell me the best options for best quality video and really smooth frames? also a nice free video editor and how to make a video in slow motion please :D

Sure.

The max 4k setting will only do like 15 FPS so it's kind of a novelty.

The 2.7k setting will get you 30 FPS and is a good default.

If you are doing something more high-speed (like hockey) then you'll want to bump up to 60 FPS; I'd go 1080p, Normal or Wide, at 60FPS or higher.

If you want slow-mo then you basically shoot at any framerate higher than your eventual display rate and convert it in an editor app. So typically you'd make a 30 FPS video, so you could shoot stuff at 60 FPS for half speed. the 720p mode on the Hero 3 will do 120 FPS for some pretty good slo-mo.

For video editing apps check the advice in this thread. I use Premiere CS6 myself but that is probably overkill for fun projects, and not exactly cheap.

So I put together a little 2 minute edit of the stuff I shot over Christmas... for those of you wondering about the GoPro performance. This video is about 80% GoPro HERO3 and 20% iPhone 4S.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCaLSjENveo (make sure you select 720p or 1080p)

I'm pretty pleased with the timelapse stuff, the quality is outstanding, and many of these were inside the waterproof case, which reduces the IQ a bit (vs naked frame, which I now have on order).

Everyone hates other people's vacation videos so I kept this one to 2 minutes :) This is me and my wife in Cuba, including more of the fishes above...

The timelapse sections looked great. You can probably shoot a lot of cool looking stuff using that. The image quality was pretty impressive too. Can't wait to get mine.

The accessories really add up with one of these things.

The HERO3 Black came with a bunch of stuff, side mounts and the like, but I decided that I definitely needed the Naked Frame for image quality. And of course the tripod mount, to use with regular pods and Gorilla pods and the like, totally necessary. Then I saw the camera helmet strap was cheap so added that. Then of course I needed the bike handlebar mount. Then I saw the power adaptor – universal! charges 2 things! – so for completion's sake i added that...

I have a problem apparently

My friend has a few GoPros and he hasn't bought 1 single official accessory. He just custom fabs his own parts to save money, I recommend it.

I'd buy one if they made a high FPS camera.

My body is too fast for anything less than 3,000 fps.

I spend way too much time on the couch

Really? wow. apart from 3D printing polycarbonate I'd have no idea how to do that for some of these mounts. The 3-prong thing has a tight tolerance.

I love my GoPro. It's awesome.

On our Alaska trip, we used the chest packs and they were great. My brother made this (it's supposed to be tongue in cheek) in the airport as we flew home from the footage we gathered. We have a longer version, but I don't have that online.

Pretty fun device, and I'd be happy to upgrade to the 3.

Hate to bump this old thread, but does anyone have updates on when the gopro hero 4 will release?

I'm hearing october, but also hearing unofficial delays till march 2015.

I'm out of the country till january and thought it would be the perfect time to capture footage. But should I wait for the 4?

Still no factory swappable lens... (to replace the fisheye) is kinda annoying. But otherwise this is nice.
The fisheye is part of GoPro's signature look so why would they get rid of it?

Even if the description wasn't plastered on the wall you'd be able to tell which was a GoPro at only a glance.
