The Premise:
GAF replays through one of gaming's most iconic series from start to finish

How this will work:
We shall replay the entire series main entries from Metroid through Other M. I figured Dec 1st is a good start date for the Original Metroid as that gives people a week and a half to get a copy of the game. We are going to replay the games in RELEASE ORDER.

We'll try and play through the 2d enteries in a weekly basis and the 3d enteries in a bi weekly basis till we are through.

Dates:

Metroid: - Dec. 1st
Metroid II: - Dec 8th
Super Metroid: - Dec 15th
Metroid Fusion: - Dec 22nd

Metroid Prime: - Dec 29nd
Metroid: Zero Mission - Jan 12th
Metroid Prime 2: - Jan 19th
Metroid Prime 3: - Feb 2nd

Other M: - Feb 16th

Links to places to get the 1st couple of games!

Metroid: - Wii Virtual Console 500 Points
Metroid: - 3ds eShop $4.99
Metroid II: - 3ds eShop $3.99
Super Metroid: - Wii Virtual Console 800 points

It is worth noting that the original Metroid is an unlockable on the Zero Mission cart! So you don't have to buy the 1st game if you can get your hands on Zero Mission.

How will this thread work?
Will try to just keep it all in this thread. I'll make a follow up if/when we run over the post count. I'll try and get a mod to change the title each week as we go to reflect the current Metroid game everyone should be playing!

Wiki Entry!

Metroid Prime is a video game developed by Retro Studios and Nintendo for the GameCube, released in North America on November 17, 2002 and in Japan and Europe the following year. It is the first 3D game in the Metroid series and the fifth main installment, and is classified by Nintendo as a first-person adventure[3] rather than a first-person shooter, due to the large exploration component of the game and its precedence over combat. Metroid Prime, along with the Game Boy Advance game Metroid Fusion, that was released alongside it on the same day in North America, marked the return of the Metroid series after eight years – the last game in the franchise had been 1994's Super Metroid.[4]

Metroid Prime is the first of the three-part Prime storyline, which takes place between the original Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus.[5][6] Like previous games in the series, Metroid Prime has a science fiction setting, in which players control the bounty hunter Samus Aran. The story follows Samus as she battles the Space Pirates and their biological experiments on the planet Tallon IV.

The game was a collaborative effort between Retro's staff in Austin, Texas and Japanese Nintendo employees, including producer Shigeru Miyamoto, who was the one who suggested the project after visiting Retro's headquarters in 2000. Despite initial backlash from fans due to the first-person perspective,[7] the game was released to both universal acclaim and commercial success, selling more than a million units in North America alone.[8] It not only won a number of Game of the Year awards, but it is also considered by many critics and gamers to be one of the greatest video games ever made and remains one of the highest-rated games on Metacritic.[9] In 2009, an enhanced version was released for Wii as a standalone game in Japan and as part of Metroid Prime: Trilogy internationally.[10]

So down for this. Was gonna replay Metroid Prime over the break but might put it off for a bit now.

Good! You've got roughly 9 days till we start to come up with a copy of the OG Metroid so you best get on that!

Then you can just do your Prime replay with the rest of GAF when that comes up! :)

This might be a good time for me to finally go through my copy of the Metroid Prime Trilogy (and Other M, if I must :p). I'll skip the first segment as I recently went through Super Metroid.

I actually just beat Metroid II return to Samus about a month ago and I do not plan on doing that again, the rest I will play, but not that one.

I'm for sure up for this. Not expecting to finished any of the Prime ones or the first one but this'll give me a good excuse to play Super Metroid again and to finally break into the Metroid Prime Trilogy I got last year.

The only reason I even came close to beating the original is cause of the save states on 3DS hahahah

I've tried playing the original Metroid before. I can't do it. I can't play the Metroid games that don't have maps. I always get hopelessly lost.

It's all up to you and your fun level on things like this. So if you want to play just start with us and grab a map off of Gamefaqs and follow that!

I would love to play metroid and metroid 2 because they're the only games I haven't played, but I finished the rest of the series. I can't do it since I'm playing other games. Also, I don't think I'll be able to finish those games really fast because it's time consuming.

Metroid NES is on my list of shame - games from my childhood that I still haven't completed.

I think that the amazing-ness of Super Metroid, Zero Mission, and Fusion has clouded peoples perception of the series, honestly. The first two games are kind of shit.

OP: You should add that metroid 1 is also playable on the zero mission cartridge. If someone is going to play both, they might as well only pay for the NES one once.

On second thought, I haven't played Fusion or Zero Mission in a while so I'll add those to the list too. They're fun and short.

I have Metroid and Metroid Fusion on my 3DS already since I'm an ambassador, getting the other 2D entries'll be easy, and I still haven't played my copy of Prime, so I might be down for this. It'd be my first time experiencing Metroid II and Primes 1-3, and my first time beating any Metroid besides Zero Mission, so it could be a lot of fun.

Any reason we're including Other M, but skipping Hunters and Pinball?

Added this helpful piece of info to the OP thanks!

You can also play the original Metroid if you own both Fusion cartridge and Prime on GameCube and link the games with GBA-GC cable.

I would take part but I replayed the entire series half a year ago and it's too soon :(

Cool idea, I think I'm going to join in for this.

Well, for all of it aside from Other M. There's no way I could possibly force myself to play through that again.

Nice idea. Maybe I'll join, I still have to beat about half of those games. On the other hand, there's so much other stuff I want to play at the time. Well, at least the first few aren't very long anyway.

I'll do it

He'll ill stream it live

Interesting Idea! I'd be willing to live stream my full on straight playthrough of the NES Metroid and let people watch!

Granted this is provided that people would even care to actually watch my playthrough.

except uh...I might not finish Metroid 1, it's too hard.

I'll get some into it though, beat super metroid recently on stream.

Too much M2 hate in this thread, I love that game (and no I didn't play it as a kid so it's not just nostalgia).

I'll try and join in with this. Dunno if I'll be able to complete M1 though, I am awful at it

I once beat Metroid 1 as a kid 4 times in a row in one day. I kept playing because I had chicken pox, and if I didn't have the controller in my hand I would want to scratch myself to death.

I'll live stream my play through as I specific route I always go through to complete this game. Maybe people can watch my playthrough and grab some hints and tips to complete it on their own.

I've been wanting to play Metroid on the 3DS so I'll be down for most of these. I don't have anyway to play Fusion though which sucks I've never played it.

Yeah as said before. If only Nintendo would get off their crazy streak and just release GBA titles for download on the eShop. Grrrrr!!!

Agreed on both points. I beat II for the first time less than a year ago and it was great, even on an unlit gba screen.

I love the atmosphere and music of the original Metroid too, but I've never beaten it without a code. Kraid destroys me every time.

Anyways, I'll have to get ahold of a Wii to play my copies of the trilogy and Other M, but I'm totally down.

I can cover three alone on my 3DS (Fusion, 1, 2)

Never completed 1 or 2 so I'll be looking for some helpful hints on here! This is right around the time I break up from college for Christmas too, yeeeees.

Also, thankyou several times over for not including Hunters. I hate that game, possibly more than Other M.

Just got Metroid on my 3DS. If I remember, I'm in

I'll try and keep the thread going to remind people to get a copy before the start date, and then the thread will be bumped because of people playing the games. So hopefully that'll help you remember to come play with us! :)

I want a new side scrolling Metroid =(. The 3D games of Mario and Metroid never appealed to me like the old classic 2D side scrollers.

I lost my entire Gamecube collection a few years ago (bye bye Primes ;_; ), and my Wii bricked this summer ;_; (bye bye Metroid, Super and Prime 3 ;_;)

If I get a Wii U in time I'll join in on a MP3 playthrough.

Also go play Metroid! It was probably one of my best gaming experiences when I first played it in 2010. If you can get over the old look and some archaic designs(start up with low energy, repetition of rooms/enemies) there's a really great Metroid game waiting to be played.

I also highly recommend that you make your own maps :)

Here are the ones I drew during my playthrough.

I tried drawing maps when I played it for the first time a couple of years ago too. Was way harder than I expected to keep them coherent and readable, not mentioning dimensionally correct. Never made it through the game.

But these colored maps you made look awesome! I might use them for my upcoming playthrough! Heh.
