Far Cry 3 Spoiler and Speculation Thread | Jason in Wonderland

WARNING: UNMARKED SPOILERS IN THIS THREAD!

So, there are two endings - a choice you're presented with at the end to save your friends or to join Citra. I saved my friends because that's what I feel was the right thing to do. Joining Citra because Jason was finally "becoming his own man" was a bit too selfish. Felt bad for his friends and loved ones, especially when they needed him the most.

I also like the parallels to Alice in Wonderland. Someone in the OT brought up how those Alice quotes could be interpreted in a way where everyone in Rook Island was insane. What did you guys think of the characters? I thought Buck, Willis and Sam were pretty interesting and I think those characters were insane in different ways and for different reasons.

Also, I'm reading around that during fights against Buck, Vaas and Hoyt - you're being controlled by a spirit... I wonder how the soldiers around Hoyt died at the end.

What say you about the overall story of Far Cry 3? Did you pick up any additional tidbits from Lost Letters and Memory Cards?

They kind of went nowhere with the whole insanity, hallucination, man vs. self stuff in the end. I expected the rug to be pulled out from under me, some split personality shenanigans, or something interesting to happen. Instead, Citra kidnaps Jason's friends that he doesn't care about anymore and then she gets shanked.

It feels like a lot of really awesome setup went nowhere. The first two thirds of the game seemed to be setting up a cynical deconstruction of the old Mighty Whitey trope, but in the end it squanders that.

The insanity stuff and the quotes from Alice in Wonderland feel like they're leading up to something huge. When you kill Vaas, everything goes downhill. The story feels like a wasted opportunity. I didn't want a big TWEEST or anything, but it's a shame that in the end the story doesn't really say much.

For making me sit through his long ass speeches

Worst "boss" battles ever for all 3 of them.

Seriously Vaas should have been the lead in charge of Hoyt or at least made Hoyt another faction that eventually tries to screw over Vaas by using Jason, which would have lead to his death by Vaas eventually when the plan fails.

Was such a waste of a good character to have him die first.

Yeah them killing Vaas was just dumb, and they definiterly didn't play the insanity angle up as much as they were hyping it. Honestly in that respect the shit felt tame as hell. Honestly Vaas was the only one who could even be considered clinically insane, and even then he really wasn't.

Holy shit @ "bad" ending, that first person sex scene ..

it's a real bummer if you're having sex and the girl keeps talking about her brother -_-

I just watched that ending on YouTube. No wonder Vaas "left", it's because Citra wanted Vaas, her own brother, to bone her. I'd probably go insane too.

Also, that ending is so stupid.

Brilliant game. I thought all the Villains were absolutely fantastic. The boss fights were disappointing though - they should not have resorted to QTE's. Also like everyone else said they should have given Vaas some more time in the game. I am so pissed that he is dead - now there is no chance of him coming in any of the future games. :(

He doesn't really have to be dead. He WAS staring at you after you 'stabbed' him.

Don't know if they plan to run with this plot for next game though.

I wouldn't be surprised if Vaas were alive. Or... "alive". I have a feeling the Far Cry team liked working with the actor, based on the press and the latest videos he's released, and would be really surprised if we didn't see more.

So I just completed the campaign. What is wrong with you and some of your friends? They go from being raped, nearly killed or sold into slavery to "woah, that was so cool!". What in the actual fuck? Then Jason tells Riley to "use the Force"? Seriously? Stuff like this is pretty much the running theme story-wise of this game. One moment everyone is sad and is crying and a moment later you're screaming your lungs out about how cool that explosion was. It makes no sense at all. Also, I killed me friends mainly because most of them acted like dumb-asses and douchebags only for Citra to kill me anyway! Screw you, lady.

Vaas was pretty much the only highlight of the game in terms of story and storytelling. Too bad you kill him halfway through the game already. I still have no idea how you do that by the way. First you're knocked out, you get high, kill a bunch of fake Vaas' and at the end you've stabbed the real one... or something. Why not have him be the leader of all the pirates and privateers? We only saw that Hoyt guy a handful of times and he was a lot less interesting than Vaas. The game should've ended with killing Vaas instead of Hoyt.

I added a link for this thread in the OT as well, even though I cant read this thread yet. I'm only half way through the game, but the Map Editor is draining me.

yeah i dont think vaas got enough time, would be ok with him coming back in the future however they decide to spin it

maybe you get to play as the guy and watch him descend into madness before this all began

whole story was pretty crazy, there was a lot of killing. i tried both endings and watching him slit liza's throat was fucked uuup.

Yeah,

The first thing that came to mind when Liza was on my screen on her last moments : For some bunch of rakyat dudes, Vaas sister and one insane paradise island that is not even on the map, nobody knows about it, to accept them over his friends and girlfriend Liza, to deal with them in murderous way, is not like is their fault for his brother death ? Screw that, I'm on the boat. :-) There are plently of paradise islands on the earth to visit and relax from this insanity place. He is enough rich already.

Another thing, why did they had to kill his brother so early in the game. I kind like his character, when he was looking at me with those eyes movement and talking like there was no Jason, just me.

Well done here, Ubisoft - about the eyes to all the characters, I mean.

Kinda sad that doctor Earnhardt didn't play a bigger role in the game. You only really see him once or twice during the entire thing.

It felt to me that for like the whole insanity thing was going to be leading up to some "fight club" moment with jasons little bro. Up until the point you see him in Hoyts headquarters there is very little mention of him, he's not even in the character bio either.

I dunno, to me it felt like the ending was rushed and we never got that whole realisation that what you're doing and who you are IS insane.

It had a lot of potential but it went... nowhere really. Best character dies far too early, your character is an irredeemable douchebag who learns absolutely nothing from the experience and there's a whole lot of hinting at some sort of insanity revelation that never transpires. The drug fueled dream sequences were interesting but were ultimately just used as a lazy way to progress the plot and get your character out of impossible situations.
The story has it's moments but as a whole I felt it was deeply unsatisfying.

Decided to go with the good ending, I never really cared for Citra. Vaas was a fantastic character, as was Doctor Earnhardt. I get the feeling Buck was imaginary, the way he'd appear and disappear. I don't know much about the metaphysics of it all but yeah once Vaas dies the game was pure tripe. Hardly worth bothering with the literary analysis.

Hoyt felt super inspired by the undercover cop in Leon: the Professional, his appreciation of classical music and the way he struts around. Oh well, hopefully the co-op is good.

The biggest things that pissed me off were when you literally had no choice in the matter "press Q to bet life" fuck this. Just make it a cut scene you cretins. It's a shame they had to write Dennis into such a shitty role as well. Liked the guy, but after I saw him hanging out drunk I just felt like he was a different person.

I think he had a death wish after he found out you were sleeping with Citra. Maybe Brody saw every one of his henchmen as an extension of Vaas under the influence.

Did anyone think the game would be better with a silent protagonist? I know that's often a personal taste thing, but it seems like they only had him talk in order to er.. guide the player aurally. Most of the time it worked, but meh.
Hit it with a hammer, that primes the ignition.

The real question is...where did they get the paint to paint it white? D:
There was a load of paint cans around Earnhardt's mansion. The scaffolding was a half finished job. How did you find out about the boat being fixed up and painted white? I didn't see that.

I have to say at the beginning right after you escape

what trained soldier would sit down and open the map right outside the camp? that was incredibly stupid on Grant's part, go into the forest at least a little

I really hated how they handled killing Vaas and Hoyt. One second I'm being held down by 2 guards and my finger is getting cut off and the next I'm killing Hoyt in a knife fight. What the hell happened to the 2 heavily armed guys who were literally just holding me down?

Drugs.

So I finally finished.

Overall, I enjoyed it. Possible GOTY even. My trouble with the story is that it almost takes a nose-dive the moment Vaas dies.

Ubisoft paints him such an amazing antagonist (and he certainly earns that praise), but why would you FUCKING KILL HIM OFF HALFWAY THROUGH THE GAME?!

Overall, I thought the friendly characters were ok. Throw-aways at least. They really could have cut your friends down to like 3 and killed off the rest to make things more interesting. Seems like a couple more should have died.

Bucks was probably my favorite overall. He was twisted, and then towards the end of his story arc, he goes MEGA-TWISTED, like Pulp Fiction TWISTED. Great characters overall as far as antagonists go.

But my main point is, this games story would have been TWO-HUNDRED TIMES what it is if Vaas had been the main antagonist. He is worlds beyond Hoyt, and how Vaas answered to Voyt is very much beyond me. It makes zero sense seeing how twisted Vaas is. Vaas could eat Hoyt for lunch.

I think Dr Earnhardt could have played a better role as well.

Yeah they put all this effort and pre-release hype into Vaas and he has like 3 or 4 main talking moments in his part of the story and then he's gone. It was a total waste of potential to have a truly memorable villain.

It was PERFECT. Like when he puts a bullet in you and then throws you in a mass grave, and you survive to climb your way out?? I WAS RIVETED!

And he pretty much dies next mission. My heart sank, like I was in denial. I kept hoping that Jason had a bad trip and that Vaas would make another appearance later on. No such luck. It almost killed the story for me.

Or when you capture that truck, only to open the back hatch and Vass JUMPS THE FUCK OUT AT YOU. FUCK I love Vaas.

I would have happily stayed on the island with Citra, but then she had Earnheart killed and wanted you to slaughter your unarmed & bound friends. As crazy as her brother.

First game to have first person sex scene complete with squelches? Also briefly showed Citra fucking Vaas so there's another first for 3D depictions.

This. I really don't know what happened in the fight with Vaas.

I had assumed it was a hallucination, since that whole mission was so weird and you wake up back at the temple. But then everyone was talking about how you killed Vaas.

It would have been great had the second half of the game you keep thinking you are killing Vaas, only to kill him again - making it good mirror to Vaas being frustrated with killing you in the first half of the game. Insanity effects could have been then new malaria. Oh well. Too bad.

You know what was funny? I saw the ending coming a mile away with the choice stuff and I was totally ready to join with Citra. I was getting into the whole primal warrior deal but even though all of Jason's friends were stoner's I still couldn't kill them.

The ending was short but I thought it wrapped up alright.

Overall I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The cinematics were well done and I loved that it never really left the first-person viewpoint. Also, I liked whenever one of Jason's friends would comment about him being different; Ubi should have nailed that down some more. You know, of Jason kind of turning into a psycho himself.

I really wish Vaas was a bigger part of the story. He died way to quick.
Yes. One of the better villains this generation and now he won't even be back for a sequel.

Probably.

While the story itself is pretty "meh" most of the way through, the cast of characters were so fucking awesome. As others have said, Vaas should have had a much larger part, fantastic potential just flushed away. I loved Sam (BLITZKREEEEEEEEEEIG!) and Willis and Buck and everyone! All a different kind of crazy.

I guess I got the "bad" ending, but I was laughing my ass off.

I think the game did a really interesting job of making you experience that power high for most of the second island, and slowly bringing you back down when you first meet Riley. It's good that he didn't really talk much and was kind of a blank slate, although I think if it was Liza it would've been way more impactful. She was really the only okay character of the friends. Citra seemed way underdeveloped and it's really quite a shame for someone so integral to the story. Like everyone else said, losing Vaas halfway through really hurt the story, and it would've been great if he and Hoyt switched roles, or if there was some twist with Vaas surviving.

I really loved that poker scene with Sam the first time and later on with Hoyt too. Great tension, but again alot of missed opportunities, especially with the idiotic QTE boss fight.

I too was fully ready to stay on the island but you start to see how fucked up the rebels are when Earnheart is killed and they force you to kill your friends. It just seems like a missed opportunity to have them be even crazier though, but I guess they had to try and keep it a slightly difficult choice. I guess if you look at it that way it kinda justifies some of the friends being complete unlikable douchebags.

Anyways, great game, okay story that could've potentially been really cool. It'll definitely be a strong contender for my personal GOTY.

Oh man. All of this. I really was hoping you didn't actually kill Vaas when it happened. The boss fights were really lame too. Vaas was so great, but I expected him to be in it so much more.

After reading about the bad ending in here, I won't even bother with that. Too messed up for me. The good ending was alright. I really liked this game though.

I went with the friend ending. I felt Sitra was just way too clingy. And I was right, she just wanted me for my seed. The friend ending was pretty average and the Sitra ending felt like a complete joke but overall I enjoyed the story. It was fun to follow such great characters (aside from any of Brody's friends, what a bunch of douches) around on the island, while I do think some of the characters definitely had wasted potential, especially Vaas getting offed about halfway through, I felt the characters that were introduced following that like Buck and Sam made up for it.

Just finished. I really, really enjoyed this game. Vaas was a great villain, and it's a shame they killed him off so early... I kinda wanted to see their rivalry extend all the way to the end of the game. But oh well. I did quite like the other villains though. Buck was just creepy and deranged (in a different way from Vaas), while Hoyt was a fair bastard alright.

I think the performances in this game are fantastic across the board. While Vaas is the stand-out, Buck and Hoyt are performed really well as well. Sam was great too. When he died, I was so pissed. He is pretty much the only person on the Islands that seems genuinely... good. Great performance too, it seems like all the actors had a lot of fun. Even Jason I thought was performed really well. Say what you will about the character (total douche dude bro with a murder boner, lololol), I think the actor did pretty well with what he was given. I actually dug it when his anger began spiraling and he started speaking murderously (like in the final fight with Hoyt).

So, the island is legitimately supernatural, right? That's what I got out of it. Sure, there's tons of drugs fucking with him, but there are some seriously weird things on the island. Hell, the whole thing with Buck certainly went through the weird history of the island, which really gives me the first indication. Every boss fight with a knife was really trippy, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't high during those. Maybe he just really was insane. But I dug at the end with Hoyt that he flashed out for a moment, then when he flashed back, it was him and Hoyt. So he basically murdered everyone and then took down Hoyt. Spirit? Disassociative moment? I dunno. But I dug it.

At the end, I saved his friends. The other choice doesn't really make sense in the face of everything he's gone through. Plus, Citra's fucking crazy. Never put your dick in crazy.

Loved the game until the last five minutes.

They could have done more to foreshadow the craziness of Citra's tribe following Vaas' death. Having the drunk speech and 'don't rescue your little' brother phone call from Dennis was anything but gradual. The drunk scene alone felt so off.

An easy fix would have been to have shown that hand a little more and then have Citra's tribe go full crazy as you mop up Hoyt. Then the friend choice doesnt come out of left field. Therefor, when you choose to stay with your friends, Citra's tribe becomes the new bad faction and you can turn around and 'reclaim' the whole island again (post credits) by taking the Blue outposts back.

And didn't she already sleep with you during the demon scene? Why does she need to kill you at the end? I read the writers explanation of that garbage ending and he's barking up the wrong tree. Why not let the friends sail away and have me stay? Nope, gotta choose to stay and kill them or leave 'paradise'. Great game took a major hit with those last moments.

I refuse to believe Vaas is dead. They marketed the shit out of him and I can see him coming back as DLC. If they do decide to kill him off then have him come back in Jason's psyche like in Fargate to taunt him. Makes sense since Jason is more or less becoming Vaas 2.0.
