Akaneiro: Demon Hunters
A free to play ARPG with classic design sense meets fast-paced action, inspired by Japanese themes and the Red Riding Hood tale.

Akaneiro has been in development since mid 2011. Our Closed Beta has been running since November 2012. Our target platforms are Windows, Mac OS X, Android/iOS Tablet. Both the dedicated PC client & web version will enter open beta in January 2013.

We desperately want the final form of Akaneiro to represent the great amount time and effort that’s gone toward getting it this far. To finish what we've started and present Akaneiro to our players in a truly final state, we need to deliver our promised features to all target platforms.

The problem is we’re out of time and money to do so. That’s where you come in…

We need to raise $200,000 to support our current team of developers in realizing the most complete version the game. Listed below you'll find out what we earnestly believe is necessary for Akaneiro to truly become the game we know it can be.

Your backing will guarantee we can include the following:

The Big Important Additions-

  • Android and iOS Tablet Version – We’ve done a lot of groundwork earlier in development; but we don’t have the resources for a full port alongside our other work. Backing will ensure we can deliver Akaneiro as a cross-platform experience.
  • Co-op multiplayer – Join with fellow hunters in real-time to take down the Demon Kings of Yomi. Share the reward and tackle more difficult challenges.
  • Equipment Crafting System – collect raw materials from fallen enemies and use them to add specific properties to equipment. Apply any properties to any item template, for the perfect blend of stats and aesthetics.
  • Improved Community Support – Any game, especially an independently developed online game such as Akaneiro, relies on fostering a strong community. We need to add more dedicated community managers to our team.

Other Smaller But Collectively Awesome Features-

  • “Karma Void” Dungeons - use the crystallized hearts of fallen Yokai to access multi-level dungeons where extra-difficult challenges (and greater rewards) await.
  • Expanded Narrative elements – more in game dialogue, and special ally characters added to certain missions. Lore items scattered throughout the world that provide further story for each mission and the game overall.
  • Lockbox Items & Additional Consumables
  • Hand/Fist Weapon Class and Mastery
  • Expanded Weapon and Armor varieties.
  • Additional Spirit Helper Pet varieties.
  • Further training levels for all Abilities and Masteries.
  • Mark of Sacrifice – Recover a portion of lost experience by returning to the site of your death. Earn bonuses by finding Marks left by your friends.
  • Ghosts of Yomi – New “lost spirit” NPCs added to Yomi Village, providing repeatable quests for special item rewards.
  • Leaderboards – track and compare a large array of progression stats.
  • Hunting Squads - organize and brand your characters into a single squad unit, sharing profit, items and other benefits.
  • Akane Trials – Rank-based achievement system with rewards.
  • Improved Chat System with friends list management, room creation and other social features.

If you believe, as we do, that the game needs these things – then demonstrate your support by backing Akaneiro. Beyond the financial support, the vote of confidence will do wonders for our team morale as we push toward the finish line.

I've been in the beta and I think there's an NDA so I cannot comment on anything related to the game, but I do not see how they can possibly need $200,000 more for funding a cash-shop based, browser ARPG that seemed to have a fair amount of content already.

Well, there's a list of things they want to add, there. IF they're not in, then you'd be in a reasonable position to make a judgement call as to how much they'd add to the overall experience.

Free to play browser RPG from American McGee?

I'm having a hard time thinking of something less appealing then that.

Our target platforms are Windows

on Windows/PC... Spicy Horse is back in the game(thought they decided to be iOS only developer)

Alice: Madness Returns was my 2011 goty so yeah I'll help/put some money into this, since that might help them to throw Alice 3 too.

This money must be for feeding McGee's drug habit. Because he's got to be on drugs if he thinks I'm funding the development of a free-to-play game with a portfolio as sketchy as his.

I read the concept, then I thought about what it would be like if BB Hood from Darkstalkers had her own spinoff game, then I decided I wanted that more, then I became sad because present day Capcom would never do that.

Is it fun?

It's a browser-based action RPG with an Okami artstyle. Think a more accessible Diablo with minimal controls. If you're into that sort of thing, I think the game is fine. Unfortunately I don't find the waves of enemies and monotonous clicking with the mouse very entertaining.

That's true, I hadn't looked at the page yet. I also was unaware they were bringing it to PC native through Steam if possible. Don't think I'm being critical of the product; I like it. I just don't know how they went from developing it all the way through closed beta to needing a hefty chunk of change. I think some of the things they talked about might already be in, also, but I'm unsure as I didn't spend more than a couple hours with it.

I watched the video, because he seems like an alright guy.. and it's worthwhile having figures doing something a bit on the fringe.

But... I don't fund free to play games. It's an incredibly lucrative market at the moment and I don't see why they need to turn to the public to fund it other than they won't be accountable to a publisher. Art's nice.. it'll probably get funded on that alone so w/e. At least they're honest about what they're making and what the finished product is.

I was invited into the beta and never actually played it. Watched the trailer on my phone when I got the email, thought it looked super neat, and then forgot about it. I should check it out.

Artistically was great, but the graphic, the controls and the camera sucked

Im starting to realize I have no idea what the hell people want out of a 3D platformer camera. Unless the camera is significantly worse on the console versions than it was on PC

(I disagree with the other complaints as well but that one stuck out to me the most for some reason)

The camera did have some issues. It wasn't intelligently following how you play.. you'd have to pass through an occasionally badly placed gate before the camera would animate into the new area.. however you'd still be controlling Alice and enemies could be about while the camera dawdles behind. It wasn't a huge issue, but when you have zaney level design like that camera should be a bit more robust.

This looks interesting but I'll just enter the open beta this month instead. I wish there was a $20 "we'll pretend you bought the game and hide all the F2P stuff" option. I don't want to kickstart for an in game item... but then again I'm still living in a past age :/

Also American MeGee looks nothing like he should. I imagined a big bushy beard and white hair. Sort of Santa meets Uncle Sam

I thought all his games so far have been very lackluster with one semi interesting concept (and one that's beginning to become a bit of an one trick pony, adding a dark twist to lighthearted things) that's never realized compellingly within. I didn't get the hype for Alice, his best was probably the first one and that too was dodgy but a little more forgivable given the era.

No $ from me.

Given that it's F2P just release what you have and convince people to pay for things. There's no need to use a waterfall model here, build as you go.

The fact there is a clear misinterpretation of the business model is unsurprising and will probably lead to abuse, it's the vogue thing to do, but I'm not funding a F2P game in general.

It's really a shame they are sticking to it. The game looks nice and I like American McGee well enough but I don't want to play it.

I keep compelled to pledge so I can keep alight the dim hope that Alice 3 may happen.

Artistically was great, but the graphic,
huh? someone start posting hair gifs.

the controls
huh?

and the camera sucked
I can't deny it had issues.

seriously though, what TECHNICAL short comings did the graphics have that makes you say they sucked. the only thing I can think of as a technical issue is that Alice instantly could do a 180 without an accompanying animation... but I forgave it that given how tight it made the controls. but that's all I've got. best hair physics in any game ever though. every thing else seemed as good as any other AAA UE3 game.

still unmatched to this day.

and yes Alice 2 is really one of the best UE3 games out there.

the control is fluid and Alice moves like a beast 3D platforming is great, and the camera issues during combat can be solving by clinking trigger to unlock targets for just a sec if it went to far or cover the wrong angle.

I love Madness Returns its one of my favorites this gen but I feel the weapons could have used more variety like the first game and no ledge grabbing was such a BS downgrade IMO. The game worked pretty good as it was but it felt like it was lacking some things of the original that would have added more to it. I liked the story but I felt the Chesire cat was underutilized in comparison to the original game and not as fleshed out. The game was pretty old school design which I can understand some people not being into it since then it has come to some new gimmicks and evolution into the genre. The game art direction still king despite some technical shortcomings. Alice was a unpolished diamond overall. Great game that only a few will appreciate.

As for Akaneiro it looks really promising but I'm not even sure if my laptop can run it since its a mess. If I get a computer later on I'll make sure to play it cause I like the premise of the game and the art direction and see how it fleshes out. Hope they reach their goal pretty soon and make all they want to add to the game.

If Spicy Horse was able to make Alice go from a meh SO EDGY interpretation of the classic story to a flawed but still fun and memorable experience in Madness Returns, I'm willing to give McGee the benefit of the doubt. Sucks it blatantly had a ton of content cut out of it; most of the cut bosses even still have dialog and bio files in the game and the art book is basically a long list of "This would've been awesome to implement, buuuuuuuuuuuuut..."
