Severe windows 8 issue.. Screen permanently dimmed?

So I went through the process of upgrading not one but 2 different computers using 2 different windows 8 keys and such, the one went smooth it seems.. The other is having a weird issue. Basically it was fine to start, I turned my back and was doing my thing on my main computer, and then the other made an odd noise and the screen went dim. Figured it must just be the computers power saving mode.

Unfortunately, hitting the mouse did nothing to help, all the brightness settings are maxed out in every area I know of, and a bunch of searching with google did nothing to help the issue. I disabled various settings and such, I just don't get it. I ran all the windows 8 updates and such after to no help. Any ideas?

Try another monitor. I would guess the backlight went out. This is presuming you've already tried rebooting it (and it was dim in the bios splash).

I did reboot, I did disable adaptive brightness, and the weird noise just sounded like a system operating noise. It would seem really odd that the screen blew out seconds after installing windows 8.. Girlfriend would kill me :p Plugging it into my main monitor it seems to look fine on that, but when I unplug the computer from the power cord (it's a laptop) the screen actually gets a little brighter.

Sounds like the monitor brightness is dimmed in the Power Options when you plug it in..You could do it in 7 too. Look in the Control Panel, maybe?

Also, I just restarted the laptop, and the brightness was normal up until it got into the main OS itself, it's definitely not the backlight :/

Not setup at all right now, this happened within 5 minutes after putting in the username. I'm going to re install, but I wanted to make sure this wasn't some odd setting I didn't know about.. It's like the laptop did its auto dim and got stuck in it forever :/

Could be a driver issue. I know that my brightness controls simply don't work using the latest intel graphcis drivers so I've been using one of the windows 8 beta drivers (the last one that did work correctly on my laptop).

I kind of have the same problem with my boot camp partition on my mac. The screen will seem really dim but then when I go to the desktop it comes up to full brightness. I remember turning off my main screen driver to stop BSOD and it fixed this issue as well.

Hmm, what kind of drivers would I need to hunt down for a laptop that doesn't even have a GPU I think. Her laptop is a bit older than mine, it's a gate way M series or something like that.

Alright doing some research, i was able to narrow down I think the problem.. her laptop doesn't have a Gpu from AMD or Nvidia, but I guess something from intel, and the drivers for it are considered legacy? Anyone know how I could fix that..

Is it using recent drivers?

It's using whatever windows has installed, going to the website they don't seem to have drivers for it, her laptop is from 2007 or so (late 2007). Very frustrating, intel seems really bad with their support.

I reformatted the computer to try and fix the issue, but as soon as windows 8 did its update process it went back to the same issue. Doesn't seem like an issue I can get much help on here but for anyone with an older laptop or computer, beware of installing windows 8 on it if it lacks a gpu from Nvidia or AMD it seems.

Anything there? For laptop drivers, you need to go through the manufacturer. They are the ones releasing drivers compatible with your laptop.

All the drivers on that page are for XP and 2000, i'm not the most computer savvy person on the planet so this might be an easy fix for some, but it seems as if there simply were no drivers written for this. If it's possible to revert to older drivers i wouldn't know how. When i first got back into it after the reformat, the brightness settings were all disabled and it said windows can not adjust brightness for this screen, after the auto updates kicked in, it gave me the controls while permanently dimming the screen once again. Is it possible to go back to beta drivers or something like that for the display?

Just ignore/uninstall Windows 8 Intel GPU update and install something older like a Windows 7 driver.

Laptop's from 2007? You're SOL if it's a driver problem, then, since support for your model would have probably ended well before Windows 7 got a release.
