Four in February, take a bite out of your backlog

A friend of mine recently made me aware of the Four in February initiative. It was started by a Kotaku post, and the challenge is simple: beat four games in February. It can be ones you've already started, or ones you're playing for the first time. Just get them done before March. Seeing how much of GAF has chronic backlog problems and participates in activities such as the Backlog Blitz, I figured we should have a topic where people can declare the games they are challenging themselves to beat and post updates.

As for me: my friend and I add a twist to our challenge. We each listed our backlog and we each chose the other person's Four in February. He chose for me:

Assassin's Creed II
Zombi U
Panzer Dragoon Orta
(update: beaten 2/4)
Beyond Good & Evil

FYI, the games I chose for him were Bastion, Shadow Complex, Dues Ex: Human Revolution and Chrono Trigger.

Damn, you really screwed your friend here man. Haha.

Edit: his games will take longer to beat, I mean. I like this idea a lot though.

Yeah, I'll jump on. Anarchy Reigns, Left 4 dead 2[just play through all the campaigns], God of War 3, and... How long is Disgaea3? I'll try that too.

This is tempting but so much stuff comes out in February and I have to be studying. ;_;

Let me try anyway :P

Well I beat Pokemon Platinum on 1/31 at 11:40ish PM so I'm counting it.

On my way to 100%ing Wario Land II. (Don't consider it beaten until I do.)

Heard Little Inferno is short and making my way through it. (Screw 100%ing this.)

Ok. Lets do this. Dunno what my fourth game if any will be. My mood to play a certain game constantly changes and I am making my progress in about 30 games right now so we'll see.

Funny thing is, we had a sub-rule where you could veto one game the other purposed, but you had to replace it with two games of your choice. One he wanted was Halo 4 because he was already half way through. But the other choices he was considering were things like Valkyrie Profile 2 and Final Fantasy VIII. We looked up those games at howlongtobeat.com, and when he saw that Chrono Trigger was by far the shortest, he relented and went with my original suggestions.

I almost used that rule to sub Beyond Good & Evil out for Ni No Kuni and Fire Emblem Awakening, since those are game's I'm playing/will play regardless, but I was worried about rushing those games or not meeting my goal, so I stuck with what I know I can conquer.

Alright:

Fire Emblem Awakening
Valkyria Chronicles
Pokemon Black and White 2
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

If I can do this, I will declare myself a god.

You know what, I'll try this.

My four games:

Ni No Kuni
Fire Emblem Awakening
Sly 4
The Cave

This is definitely a cool idea! Hopefully I can manage with having two RPGs on my list...

I will give it a shot. Someone can pick my four games. Here is my backlog. No RTS's please. Or Dear Ester, HL 2, or Doom 3 either. As I'm getting the Rift, and want to play those games for the first time using that.

Ok, let's see...

Yakuza 3
Jak and Daxter
Bayonetta
Dokuro

Started them all but didn't finish, I'm a fair way into Yakuza 3 but need to find time to finish the main story.

I finished 3 last month.

The Walking Dead
Dust
Mark of the Ninja

This month if I were to take on the challenge, all I have left on my backlog is:

Okami
Red Steel 2
Zelda: Skyward Sword
Xenoblade
Resident Evil 6

No way I'm finishing 4 of these in a month even if I did have time to spare.

I'm basically going in fresh for all the choices that I've made for my four, so this should be extra exciting.

Today though, I did basically play Valkyria Chronicles up to the first actual sortie with Squad 7. Slow and steady.

HAH! I can one-up that!

This month I plan on finishing:
To the Moon
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Sly Cooper 4
The Cave
Quantum Conundrum

THAT'S FIVE GAMES, TOP THAT SUCKAS!
No seriously if you play and finish six games this month your backlog will be down by 6, you will feel relieved, a cleansing sensastion =O

Heh, some friends and I agreed to do this last week after we saw the Kotaku post. My four are:

Dokuro (Vita)
Pokemon Conquest (NDS)
Another Code: R (Wii)
Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space (PSN) (counting all five episodes as one game)

Mine are all fairly short games that I'd already started and played for a few hours, so this won't be too challenging, but baby steps to beat that backlog!

So far: I'm on the 12th stage of Dokuro (out of 15 stages), I'm pretty close to the end of Pokemon Conquest (I was about halfway through at the start of the month, but I've been playing like crazy over the last two days), I'm on the third chapter of Another Code: R, and I've beaten 2/5 Sam & Max episodes. At this rate, I'll probably be done w/most of these by the end of next week, so I might add a few more games to my list to beat this month when that happens.

I'll try, we'll see but I'm rather fantastic at clearing out backlogs without little tricks like this. My solution? Don't buy games until I'm done with the old ones (unless I hate the old ones).

Here are my four:
- Company of Heroes 5 hours in
- Dawn of War 2 8 hours in
- Mark of the Ninja 3 hours in
- Darksiders II 5 hours in

I highly doubt I can finish all these this month. We'll see though. Being realistic I imagine I'll beat CoH & MotN this month, and nearly complete DoWII.

Hmm...all right. I will complete these four games this month.

- Final Fantasy III
- Radiant Historia
- Warriors Orochi 3
- Kirby Return to Dreamland

I'll try these four. It has been one year and I have yet to finish one game.

Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP): Finished this game in 10 hours. Pretty long game and an interesting story. The last boss was pretty neat.
DmC: Devil May Cry 5: Pulled an all nighter and beaten it! I didn't think I had it in me! Took me 5 hours.
Darksiders 2: DID NOT FINISH!
Far Cry 3: DID NOT FINISH!
Dead Space 3: DID NOT FINISH!

I did not finish 3 out of the 5 games, but I finished other games instead. Crysis 3 and Star Ocean: Second Evolution.

I will give it a shot. Someone can pick my four games. Here is my backlog. No RTS's please. Or Dear Ester, HL 2, or Doom 3 either. As I'm getting the Rift, and want to play those games for the first time using that.

I'd say if you're going to pick any games, Sleeping Dogs and Saints Row: The Third would be two great games to tackle.

I'd add Dishonored and Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP to that list.

I like this idea! I'm in.

I've got 2 games I'm part way through, and 2 games I've not even started.

The Cave (I've already been through this three times, but I want to unlock all the endings.)
Paper Mario: Sticker Star (I've been playing this for quite a while. I'm on world 5-1.)

Virtue's Last Reward

Ghost Trick

Wish me luck! XD

For this to work with me I'd need someone to choose the games for me too, because I have dozens and dozens of games (including old and new games) that I've only played for the first hour or so and many more that I haven't played at all. I'm just not good at deciding in which order I should play said games. :(

Sure, why not:

Europa Universalis III
Victoria II
Crusader Kings 2
March of the Eagles

I don't think I thought my cunning plan all the way through.

I'm down:

Bayonetta
ZombiU
Persona 4 Golden
Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2

All games I've just recently started playing (except Naruto). Also, I just beat Bayonetta about thirty minutes ago, so that's one down! YEAH! Just started again on hard mode though, so I might make it a mini-goal to beat it again, but I'm not sure if I'm going to stick at it closely like I did the first time through.

Honestly, there's no way I'll beat P4G but I'm going to try. I've had it since launch but I'm only like 4 hours in... I've been meaning to sit down and plow through it soon since I've already beaten the original a few times. I just don't think I can do it in a month and also finish up ZombiU (which I'm only three hours into or so as well) and Naruto (which I haven't played at all, but after watching a game grumps episode on it I want to play it now ... it's just been sitting there waiting).

sure, i'm game. my four will be:

kid icarus: uprising
mario kart 7
deus ex: human revolution

shit that's enough to keep me busy for months

I'll try and participate, although my free time fluctuates often each week due to school.

  • The Unfinished Swan
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Bastion
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising

Also, I'll be playing Persona 3 off and on. I'm hoping to finish it by the end of the semester. And I may start Nier at some point.

well I already got 3 down, finished mario 3d land 100%, hotline miami, and DMC on friday but i think im gonna count those towards last month

my new list is

binary domain
rhythm thief
xenoblade

and either metal gear rising if I get it on launch and just play the crap out of it or something else if it catches my eye

I'm in!
Uncharted: GA (vita)
Gravity Rush
Deus ex HR (last mission)
Demon's Souls (is it possible to beat DS in 7-10 days?)

I can do this. I think.

  • Bastion
    [*]Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
    [*]Paper Mario: Sticker Star
    [*]Rayman Origins

I'm going to get started now!

Dead Space 2
Dead Space 3
Metal Gear Rising
Crysis 3

maybe even Aliens? What can I say, Art school is pretty lax

I'll give this a shot

Borderlands 2, I'm pretty far along in terms of the story, side missions however i have no idea how many side missions I have left
Darkness II, haven't started but it's short so I know I can beat it easily
Sleeping Dogs, just installed it the either day and haven't started it yet
Saints Row The 3rd, currently on chapter 2 or 3

As someone who participates in the backlog blitz, this is really cool. I also like what you and your friend have done.

Here's my 4, nothing too ambitious as I work long hours.

Playstation AllStars Battle Royale (PS3)
God of War: Ghost of Sparta (PS3)
Sly 1 (PS3)
Metal Gear Solid 3 (PSVita)

The rate I've been playing lately, I doubt I'll beat even 2 games this month. I'm currently playing Deus Ex, and it's taking its sweet time.

I'd have to pick 3 or 4 short indie games to make it, and I'm not sure I'll enjoy those.

I beat Bioshock 2 like an hour ago, so that counts.

Sleeping Dogs
Tales of the Abyss 3D
Kid Icarus Uprising.

Not really my backlog, I'm mostly through the games already apart from Sleeping Dogs which is coming Feb 6th.

I like this idea. I've been on an achievement spree lately so this will only benefit it. I can't think of a specific group of games but I will definitely beat 4 games this month.

Alrighty... does it count if I already started some of these games and never went back to them? after playing them for a few hours of course.

I'm down for this. Will be tough with a pretty full school schedule in swing and some other business (as well as me having played almost nothing since the start of the year). So let's see...

Sleeping Dogs (only an hour or two in)
Syndicate (completed the first mission)
Rayman Origins (I think I completed two levels?)
Dante's Inferno (still sealed)

I figure that's some variety in length right there and probably quite feasible. I could see me deciding I'm "done" with a game before beating it and in that case I'll aim to replace the game with something else. Oh, probably aim for Mark of the Ninja too. There's a good number of recent-ish Arcade games that I bought and then never touched or barely did so.

I'm already 8 hours into Darksiders II, anyone wanna pick my other three? Choices:

MGS3 (replay, not first time)
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
Jak and Daxter 1
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Unfinished Swan
Rochard
Outland
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Uncharted 3

EDIT: There's a chance I may get some new-ish games, like DmC, Ni No Kuni, Sly 4, MG Rising, etc. If I do, I'll probably ignore whatever my other three are haha. But I'm poor right now so probably won't be a problem.
