Awakened awakens as Project Awakened on Kickstarter

Don't know how many remembers but a few years ago some footage leaked for a superhero game called "Hero", featuring fully customizable superhero characters in a open world environment and was later dubbed Awakened.

This game has now reappeared (or reawakened) on Kickstarter asking for $500.000 to fund it in order to finish the game, this time now on Unreal Engine 4.

I am excited, I remember seeing the footage when they first started appearing and was immediately in love with the concept. Here's to hoping that they reach their goal.

I remember this. Looks sick. The world needs better superhero games. Infamous was fun and all but this looks to have great potentional.

This kickstarter looks pretty good. These are the Psi-Ops guys. I do like the character customization which is what sets this game apart from Imfamous/Protoype. It's a shame this won't be out until August 2014. I would love to see what the final Unreal Engine 4 version will look like.

YES! I wanted this game, this is totally unexpected, will surely help fund it. They deserve it. The idea is just fantastic. I am glad it is still alive.

Oh shit! This is that superhero game from a while back that was cancelled?! Fuck I might have to get on this.

EDIT: Aaaannnnd I'm backing it. A word of advice though to the team, get to the superhero action a LOT sooner in the video. I almost stopped it and moved on a ways in until the real action started and I realized what it was. The insane-o DOF doesn't help either.

Mmmm, I dont like that the story part is at the 1 and a half million thing, becuase apart from the great character customisation, what they showed as a game looks pretty shallow and repetitive (action, kill, kill, kill, how you want, but still, kill this and kill that).
I always wanted a real make your own superhero story game, were theres some type of villians and a Justice league you can be part of, making friends or not with some of the already stablished superheroes.
As if you were just part of a marvel or DC lineup (can be a totally different story with created for the game only heroes and villians of course, no need to get licesnses and all that).

So yeah, like the DC Universe MMO, but you know, good, and singleplayer.

It lives! I've always wanted to see how that prototype video they released would have turned out as a real game. And these guys worked on Psi-Ops? That game was fucking great. I think this might be the first KS I back.

This looks incredibly brown and bland :(
I really like the concept of it all, but if the game is going to revolve around killing random mercenaries and mutated(?) enemies then I think I'll pass.

Where are the super villains?

I wouldn't expect it to look like that when they officially get away from the UE3 prototype. They had a very small number of assets created by a small team. i don't think it is fair to judge the game graphically on a proof of concept.

Man do I have Fire Emblem in my mind. For a second I misinterpreted it as a project tied to Fire Emblem Awakening..

Hey guys,

Thanks a lot for the feedback and concerns. I will do my best to address them, so keep them coming if you have any more!

First of all, thank you for backing! I really appreciate the feedback and will pass it on to the team.

This is exactly what I would have posted :) I totally understand people's concerns with it looking rather shallow at the moment. Our thought was to hopefully hook people with our idea for what Awakened gameplay could be. Given that we thought we were pushing our luck expecting people to watch a 7 minute video, we didn't want to initially release a huge trailer that people may not want to sit through.

Story is absolutely a key feature for us. We know that while story doesn't make a good game, a bad or nonexistent story can ruin the experience of an otherwise good game. We will be releasing an update soon that will focus on the story aspects of the game that will hopefully alleviate some of your concerns.

Us having more money will simply allow us to spend more development time on creating a longer single player experience. I completely understand your concerns which I hopefully touched on in my response above; but I completely agree with you. It is absolutely a goal of ours to not only give you a sandbox atmosphere for you to have fun in, but also to give you a fun and engaging story no matter how much money we end with.

Another gray\brown ruined city, gotta say I'm getting a bit tired of those by now.
It just looks so generic.
Reminds me too much of Infamous and Prototype.

I find it really interesting which games meet their goals and which struggle. Did the initial Kickstarter success stories happen in a bubble or will devs continue to have success funding real, high quality AA or even AAA games via Kickstarter?

Or does it just come down to exposure? Project Eternity nailed it with a pre-countdown which got coverage on all sites and has a great pedigree behind it. Wildman is experiencing pretty much the opposite. I don't know if the game itself just looks unappealing or if the negative publicity killed it in it's tracks.

This project is interesting because it is the first medium budget action game I have seen on Kickstarter. I hope it is able to drum up some support.

too bad the project seems to have lost traction. It might've lost some backers due to Dreamfall popping up? Not the same type of game but still some might have jumped on Dreamfall with their money and don't want to split it.

Too bad, was hoping to see this come to frution.

/P

Is there an advantage to using UE4 over UE3 if you're designing a game that doesn't necessarily strive to look better than current generation games? I've noticed several announced projects that're using UE4, and I don't necessarily see why they couldn't be done in UE3 or other current-gen engines. Is UE4 all about higher-fidelity graphics, or do the optimizations on the low end make it worth using for all projects instead of using UE3?

From the UE4 video, it seems that the tools are quite a bit better to work with aswell, might be the reason.

Looks pretty bad :/

I don't think any of the videos shown are from the game they are planing to make, but from the alpha code of the game they used to work on (on the UE3 engine).

I'll definitely put some money into this. Even if it ends up being horrible, at least somebody finally attempted to make the superhero game I've always wanted.

I'm surprised this hasn't been getting more talk.
Personally it looks like one of the best Kick starters recently. Especially since there is already things to show what your money can get you. 15 days left and not even half of the 500,000 has been supported.

Looks like the Super Hero Game everyone wanted isn't happening.
