Delver's Drop Kickstarter: Physics based 2D Action RPG

Delver's drop is a 2D action RPG developed by a small Midwestern game studio, Pixelscopic.
Delver's Drop attempts to reinvigorate the 2D action rpg genre with HD graphics and a custome physics engine. Taking inspiration from games like Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Pixelscopic hopes to entice fans of the classic NES and SNES 2D action RPGS while giving said fans contemporary gameplay. Delver's Drop was featured at PAX Prime 2012 as part of the Indie Megaboth. Video of gameplay through the links below.

Goal
  • $75,000 by March 13, 2013.

Current Status
  • 359 backers w/ $13,554 at 12:08 02/10/2013

Features
  • Immense & Unpredictable Dungeon Dive — 8 zones of castle dungeons with 4 sub-levels to explore. Levels will be combined from masterfully designed hand-crafted rooms and components, with randomized content and floor layouts.
  • Physics-based Hack & Slash Combat — Since all characters and enemies move and collide on a physics-based system, any interplay of attacks, traps, and magic resolve based on responsive, snazzy, and sometimes chaotic physics effects.
  • Multiple Characters & Play Styles — Play the game with one or all of the 5 character classes (some to be decided by backers!). Classes have unique speed and movement properties, weapon, special ability, and perk tree, giving each a different play style.
  • Character Growth & Customization — Gain experience as you play each class, and keep this progress through the class’s perk tree even if your current character dies. Level up if you want more flexibility, but Delver’s Drop is totally grind-free.
  • Weapons & Sub-Items — The player can find and purchase interesting and upgraded weapons for each class, as well as a large suite of expendable sub-items that are randomly spawn during each session. But items slots are limited, requiring intelligent use!
  • Puzzles & Secrets — Like many action adventure games, Delver’s Drop will feature interesting puzzles, requiring clever manipulation of dungeon elements, using physics to advantage, and resourceful usage of secondary items.

Pixelscopic has listed a large range of stretch goals on the KickStarter page if support surpasses the $75,000 goal.

It looks okay visually and their timetable seems reasonable, but $75,000 is a lot to give an independent company with no apparent pedigree or prior releases, and the game itself seems kind of... random and mindless :/ It'd probably help if they actually listed in what capacities they worked on which shipped titles.

I agree I think it would be helpful if they had listed more of their work history. I know their lead developer Coby Utter did work as a developer at Black Lantern Studios (Springfield, MO studio that mostly does handheld nintendo titles), but in general information on their work history appears sparse.

Counter-recommendation - it's a very bland game, I think. The physics really don't help.

I agree that the visuals and music are pretty bland, but personally I found the game super fun. The way the levels and enemy encounters were set up to make the most out of the crazy over-the-top physics was very impressive. And the bosses, oh man the bosses.

Anyway, back to the relevant game here. I really like the artstyle and premise, so I'll be keeping an eye on this. $75.000 is a pretty high goal (Barkly 2 got ~$120.000, IIRC), so I may actually turn to backing this.

My big concern is that they will have to streamline it down for mobiles. I like having a ton of spells and abilities on hotkeys.

Last day for this Kickstarter. I have backed it, looks like a fun title.

They're at over $134,000 now (goal was $75,000), and have passed a few stretch goals including 4 player Deathmatch and Horde modes, and now 2 player campaign co-op (although the second player is not a Delver)

Would love to see them hit the $150k mark to add the puzzle mode.
