Consoles Might Be Releasing Early Then Thought, Sept?

I read the following on the semi accurate site:

...the PoR was December 2012 for production wafers...The chip, which is still referred to as ‘Oban’, is being run through multiple fabs in very high quantities, too high by more than an order of magnitude to simply be for dev kits. Yields on the chip are said to be something between painfully low...and worse than that. Given the sheer number of wafers Microsoft contracted for, this seems to be both an anticipated problem, and one they have plans to work through. That said, SemiAccurate’s sources are still reporting that there is much work to be done, yields are not even up to “horrid” yet.

One of the things Microsoft seems to be trying is dual or triple sourcing the parts, hoping the elves at one foundry will fix things ahead of the rest. Even if none do, three chances of a breakthrough are better than one. While there is still time to get things right, it takes about 8 weeks to run a hot lot through a fab and analyze the results. If production wafers are really going in this year, the last time a foundry can run a test wafer is about November 1. Anything after that day will not come out of the fab in time for the results to be fed back in to the production chips. That is the technical term for “The XBox Next is going to be delayed”.

Sources on the supply chain side of the console world tell SemiAccurate that there is some slack in the production schedule, six to eight weeks of delay would be possible before the launch would have to be pushed back. That meshes well with what SemiAccurate knows about silicon production times and ODM capabilities. Microsoft insiders tell us that the planned launch date is September 2013, and that is not changing without heads rolling internally.

While we have not definitively heard about a go/no go wafer in decision, if Microsoft is going to launch their next generation console this year, they almost assuredly made the December 31 date. Any delay of more than a few weeks will mean no new console in 2013, there just won’t be enough time to make them. If no one credible leaks news soon, I wouldn’t go stand in line for a new Microsoft console in late August.

With the delay of GTAV to september and the gamasutra speculation about a nextgen version being a timed exclusive on durango; Sony holding their PS4 conference so early (feb 20); and the above semiaccurate blog posts, I'm wondering if next gen might be starting in September.

Whoa Whoa... September for the Next Xbox?

That would be interesting.

Wouldn't be the first time that a new console came out in September though (Dreamcast).

Gotta get that head start I guess.

But everyone will be buying MacBooks and iPhones and iPads for back to school time.

Sent to die: confirmed.

Gotta love that quality control corporate structure. Ship out another product, irrespective of whether it is ready or lose your job. It's like they learned nothing from the red ring fiasco.

I've been thinking the PS4 might launch in October, so a September release for the next xbox would make sense if Microsoft is pushing hard to get on the market before Sony.

also this article is 5 months old. I feel like the PS4 will still launch first. Late October/Early November.

If they launch the same month as GTA without GTA.... well thats a interesting move. Maybe they have a next gen port?

When does apple do the iPad event? Thats now a september thing isnt it? Thats always the other big holiday "thing" they should stay away from

Damn, much earlier than expected. I somehow doubt it due to GTA and the alleged Destiny current gen release dates, but I guess we'll see.

Why wouldn't there be next gen ports of those games? They would be mighty appealing to anyone getting a next gen console day 1.

The real question is whether one of the next gen consoles got a timed exclusive. [speculation] I'm betting that R* was going to release the in the spring if Microsoft had to delay the 720 to 2014. Because there are no delays, R* pushed the date back to sept 17 to coincide with the nextbox release, as a timed nextgen exclusive. It will still appear on ps360 sept 17."[/speculation]

Super Nintendo launched late August and N64 launched late September. Dreamcast was already mentioned as a September date. So, yeah, there is precedence.

Well, that escalated quickly!

I was thinking earlier today maaaaaaybe October, but probably November, but not this.

Yeah I was also thinking November. November is the typical month for home console releases.

But the more that I think about it, the more that it makes sense. MS probably wants a head start... as much of a head start as they can get.

Then the GTA V delay out of no where makes me think they are making a slightly improved port.

I want to time travel to June.

Isn't this Charlie guy from semiaccurate the same, who thinks Microsoft will have a PowerPC CPU in their next Xbox?

It was one of the options MS considered, but afaik he did not say "nextbox has ppc"

I'm been thinking April unveil (to give GoW: Judgment some space), September launch for Durango for a while now. At least for North America; European launch might fall later depending on hardware supply.
Not expecting the PS4 until afterwards despite the earlier unveil next week... although, at least it's clear Sony is making 2013 now.

Yeah, late August/September. Getting out earlier than what's traditional/when people expect (i.e. November) is their intent.

Yeah, that make sense.

I mean, if they have a killer showing at this year's E3, that hype will go all the way into launch since the launch would only be a little bit more than 2 months away.

Man... I'm dying from anticipation.

MS approached Take 2 and offered them an undisclosed amount to have GTA V as a timed exclusive launch title for there next gen platform. They pushed back GTA V so that it will come out day and date on the 360, PS3, and Durango. They are using the extra time to upscale to game

Edit: Just a hunch, I have no knowledge of what is happening.

???

How do you know this?

I secretly wish E3 gets cancelled so devs could work on making good next gen games instead of vertical slice demos :(

Oh yeah?

10 minutes to PM verifiable details of how you know this or else you're gone until PS4 ships.
