Will this finally be the generation that lets us go to space?

Still Alive
Am I the only one who has been fantasizing about this for ages now? Does no one have any interest in space? I'm talking about a true space exploration simulator, where you can go from planet to planet, solar system to solar system, etc, in semi-real time.

Here is what a space sim program (Celestia) looks like on the PC with a hi-res texture pack installed (note the navigation is not game-like, it's click and travel, etc):

Now here is a space simulator that is an actual 'game', which is in development and has been for many years now, that lets you travel in real time from space into a planets orbit and over the actual land and terrain.

Here's the pre-alpha "Infinity" tech demo (it's quite amazing, and old) — Part 1, Part 2.

Don't we have enough power now to handle these types of games, or just space simulators? Will we them this generation? I'm dying for a high fidelity space exploring game that had some plot at the same time. Seamlessly going from space to land (like in that tech demo) is incredible.

tl;dr Surely there are others who are dying for an awesome space game. Someone make it happen already!

It'll be the space created by George Lucas and friends but I have high hopes for SWTOR this year in the regard of free-roam exploring of space.

Mass Effect 2 could have been this. But instead the series went another direction. And it had nothing to do with generations.

If devs wanted to make that they could have made it any gen now. Like they did in the mid 80s with Elite.

There are a few cool looking crowd funded space games but I'm not sure any are going to be on the consoles.

Star Citizen, new Elite, Rogue System, and others. Some that aren't going to be sandbox but mission based too.

i would love a console game that allowed you hop into a ship on earth, blast off into space and do shit there. just model the solar system and allow people to travel to all the planets, allow them to set up bases anywhere and fight other humans, AI, whatever.

Unfortunately OP I'm noticing a lack of alien invasion angle and galactic war in your scenario.

We are going to get the same man-child stuff as this gen but with prettier graphics.

And I know I have a ME character in my avatar.

Hey you know you have Liara in your avatar right?

My heart tells me that Microsoft never actually canceled Freelancer 2 and instead expanded it mightily into a space simulator for Xbox 720.

But my brain says fuck you Microsoft.

Unfortunately the Dudebros will never go for a game without action.

However, I could see a sort of space sim city game. You start off with limited means of production. At first you can only send small teams out into space, and even then only short distances such as to the moon. Eventually you get the ability to collect asteroids travelling near earth and put them into orbit, where you can then mine them for metals, sending the resources to your moon bases for manufacturing. From there, space immigration speeds up. You need to begin setting up systems where you begin gathering energy from Jupiter. Then you can build O'neill like space colonies at the Lagrange points or terraform the moons of Jupiter, or colonize the asteroid belt. No specific goals other than to build a function, stable space economy and infrastructure

Right there with you Sentry. It's long overdue.

That Chris Roberts thing sounded promising but I believe that's PC only for now.

I'd take a Colony Wars reboot too. Guerrilla should do that.

Microsoft Space Simulator, Tie Fighter and WC Privateer were great back then.

Never got into EVE, though.

Hopefully Chris Roherts won't disappoint.

Star Citizen in 2015 will be your best friend.
PC only? :\

I should have made it clear in the OP, i'm talking about console gaming. That's what I mean by 'this generation' as in PS4/720. PC has always been able to handle this kind of amazing stuff. Makes me jealous.

Won't happen on consoles because no publisher would ever fund it.

There was no space sims on PC either this gen until kickstarter became popular

I hadn't heard of this Star Citizen before coming to this thread. Just checked out a few trailers but I am still not sure if I am grasping what this game is properly.

Anyone care to summarize for me?

Also, would it interest someone who isn't a huge fan of Eve Online or Mass Effect?

There is this space flight sim game on pc with realistic physics and it allows you to enter and land on any planet you can see.

Unfortunately im struggling to remember its name! I know vinny and dave of giant bomb did a quick look. Arvoch conflict or something...

Argh, this is gonna drive me crazy...

Edit: ah i was right!

It was Arvoch conflict, these guys did another game with realistic physics called Evochron alliance

I heard a rumor a long time ago that some elements of that Infintity engine/demo might make it into Destiny.....The guy, Innovae?, had supposedly done some kind of work with Bungie in the past.

Yep, can't wait to launch into orbit, point my ship at the nearest star then wait till my hair grows white and my teeth fall out for something to happen.

Alternatively, I could play a suspended animation simulator, could be exciting.

OP google something called space engine.

It procedurally generates an entire universe and lets you go from a model of the universe right down to a planets surface.

Oh and it's gorgeous

Isn't Destiny going to let us explore multiple worlds? Maybe not exactly what the OP is asking, since we'd be limited to relatively small areas on those worlds, but at least its something.

EDIT: Yeah not really what the OP has in mind.

Yea, and let you do so at real-life-speeds, meaning it would take you decades to reach certain planets, and you'd never be able to reach any other stars!

An astronomy game? Meh. I think it'd have to be dirt cheap to sell.

I'm waiting for Distant Worlds Complete on Steam.

(And recently I got the urge to replay Reach for the Stars. But GOG failed me.)
