To The Grave if old

Freebird Games has announced To The Moon 2, a sequel to its calm and emotionally moving RPG that followed a pair of doctors trying to alter the memories of a dying man.

All there is for the time being is a tongue-in-cheek teaser image, one that jovially flies in face of everything To The Moon and developer Freebird stand for - apart from the satirical humour.

Pictured are what looks like characters River and Johnny flying a UFO and zapping zombies with its laser. Below, on the surface of a planet other than our own, the doctors - one masked and armed with a pistol, the other shouldering a bazooka - join the fray. Origami rabbits accompany them.

Words read: "More gunfights. More explosions. More Zombievas. To The Moon 2. 'They never should've come here.'"

The first game was incredibly engaging storytelling... If they can evoke similar levels of emotion again, they may have a customer for life in me.

Yes! I was certainly impressed with how they were able to tell such a moving story with RPG Maker. The end of the original tore me up so much.

lol my thoughts exactly. i aint playing this shit. fooled me once with the corny "man falls in love with autistic girl" story.

will definitely buy the soundtrack though. started off great but it got bad imo.

Apparently it's more of a spiritual successor to To the Moon, but it does take place in the same game universe. It's called A Bird Story.

I use the RPG Maker XP since it feels like RPG Maker 2000 on steroids; I never was a huge fan of the RPG Maker 2003 or VX - and it seems like there are even newer ones out there which I don't quite care about.

Everybody who's interested in RPG Maker but is scared because it's unflexible when it comes to certain things: keep an eye on Advanced RPG Creator; with that thing, you can convert your XP project into a ARPGC project which allows you to create Linux and MacOS versions of your game + it adds 60 FPS and other neat stuff!

There is something I don't quite understand:

The game will focus on the boyhood of a patient of Dr. Watts and Dr. Rosalene seen in Episode 2 of To The Moon.

A Bird Story = Episode 2? Or are they separate games?

In Gaos own words, A Bird Story is a simple, surreal short about a boy and a bird with a broken wing. Despite being story-based like most of my games, there are essentially no dialogues throughout. While Dr. Watts and Dr. Rosalene arent in this game (chronologically, it takes place before their time), the boy in it eventually grows up to become their patient in episode 2″ of the series.

I don't understand why people (even that Eurogamer article) seem to be so confused by this. There are TWO games.

"A Bird Story" is a short game that features a boy and a bird with a broken wing. This is set to release this summer (and be free, I guess).
"To The Moon 2" is a separate, full game, featuring the boy from "A Bird Story" as the patient (so, at the end of his life).

I mean, it's clearly explained by Kan Gao himself in both the URL printed backwards in that image (www.freebirdgames.com/a_bird_story) and in the Eurogamer article quoting it:

"While Dr. Watts and Dr. Rosalene aren't in this game (chronologically, it takes place before their time), the boy in it eventually grows up to become their patient in 'episode 2' of the series."

How the Eurogamer article itself somehow manages to assume they're the same game baffles me.

Thanks for the link, I get it now. The Polygon article I quoted earlier is a pretty bad example of game journalism, by the way. They call To The Moon "an emotional RPG", apparently assume that "the second episode" is a part of the first game (not a sequel) and then go on to tell us that A Bird Story features the boy episode 2, as in one of the parts of the first game. I might have not gotten it right, but what a mess (see my post above).
