Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ reboot of ‘Tomb Raider’ (360/PS3/PC) sees the title debuting at No1 as the biggest launch of the year so far, comfortably outselling previous best this year ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’ by more than double the week 1 sell-through (in week 7, 2013).

‘Tomb Raider’ week 1 All Format sales set a new record for the franchise, with the previous best actually set by Crystal Dynamics’ first game in this series, ‘Tomb Raider: Legend’ from 2006 with around half the sales shown here. This is the 10th Tomb Raider game in the series (original Tomb Raider launched in 1996, week 43 on Sega’s Saturn, week 47 on Sony’s PS1) and is the first version to launch as an ‘Event’ title (Tuesday 5th March, 2013).

Both the 360 and PS3 versions of ‘Tomb Raider’ set new week 1 records as the fastest selling individual formats of any Tomb Raider release so far, a record previously held by ‘Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness’ on PS2 way back in week 27, 2003. Debuting strongly at No2 is EA’s ‘SimCity’ for PC, the sixth game in the series which dates back to 1989 and which was last seen as a new release back in week 46, 2007 with the fifth instalment, ‘Sim City Societies’. Namco Bandai debut at No3 with 360/PS3 ‘Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3’ and EA bring up the last of the new entries at No4 with ‘The Sims 3: University Life’, the ninth expansion pack for ‘The Sims 3’. EA’s ‘FIFA 13’ drops 3 places to No5 (-32%) and last week’s No1, EA’s ‘Crysis 3’ is forced down to No6 (-55%).

You know it's kind of crazy to see Hitman still having long legs in the charts considering it's been out since November. But man, Tomb Raider is rocking it! Kudos to Square/Crystal for doing a good job on bringing back Lara to the top once more.

Those PC sales look pretty strong, considering that only boxed retail sales are counted and not digital (as far as I'm aware?).

Points to the obvious brand strength of both The Sims and Sim City, but surprised to see Tomb Raider there as well. It's not often 3 different box retail PC games make the top 5 at the same time is it?

Solid opening for Tomb Raider. Eidos bailing out Square time and again. Best decision Wada has made at Square.

Yup, totally agree here, Eidos has gave them the time and oppotunity to sort out their internal problems and staff infrastucture (which it seems they have/will done post FF14 and their new engine being ready for next gen development) for the coming few years. They both needed each other and it's paid off very well.

Or just, you know, not make the game for 3ds.

They did 3 wonderful Castlevania on DS. That means they had some profits for them even if they were not big sellers. That also means that there were some audience on handheld platform for such IP (we had Castlevania also on GBA). I'm sure that a more traditional Castlevania on 3DS would have been better for Konami.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Revengeance thirsts to stick around in the chart. Word of mouth must have been... pretty good.

Thats more than a solid opening for Tomb Raider, thats pretty damn fantastic. I'd have never expected it to double any previous TR launch, nor be the fastest-selling game of the year so far.

I dunno i cant remember the last 3rd party 3ds game that did well in the uk since kh, a year ago.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Actually, Castlevania has probably a debut around what the first CV on DS did and a far, FAR, FAR better debut than the other two DS titles had...and since it debuted at 39th, that says something XD. Quoting myself from last week

Not expecting a good debut for Castlevania in UK, since neither Castlevania titles for DS did that good at debut.

Yes, the other two titles didn't even enter top 20 / top 40 just for DS titles

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Yikes. This game is definitely going to be ported soon to the other systems.

It always was going to be.
Crysis 3 for PS3 at #13 on the individual chart is just over 4000 (based on estimates).

Lord only knows what Wii U/PSVita is selling outside of the top 40.

Now this is truly Yikes. Wii U must be selling less than 1k a week in the UK. Possibly much less. It may as well not even exist there because it would essentially be the same thing.

What happened to the sales of Dead Space 3, it seems to have plummeted. EA cant be happy with this.

33 (11) 360 DEAD SPACE 3 (ELECTRONIC ARTS)

...WHAT THE HELL. Didn't notice this. Shortages? It's too steep, even considering the big amount of big releases in charts this week.

For those interested, Value Chart (hint): no Wii U again this week

Terrible word of mouth.

But it's not broken like Aliens. This is something that would happen to broken titles (like Aliens or...probably Sim City next week). DS3 is considered "just" good from many people from what I've seen, but it's certainly not broken / unplayable.

A 3DS title bombing in UK ? How totally surprising !

UK is by far the worst place software wise for 3DS. IIRC, Sonic Generations 3DS sold less than the other SKUs there. Even Angry Birds 3DS did less than both 360 and PS3 SKUs, while in US it's the best selling SKU. However, it seems Castlevania handheld titles never did well in the country (look at my first post in the thread; not even specific DS charts), like Kingdom Hearts (no title over 100k) or Disney titles in general (Epic Mickey the first).

But it's not broken like Aliens. This is something that would happen to broken titles (like Aliens or...probably Sim City next week). DS3 is considered "just" good from many people from what I've seen, but it's certainly not broken / unplayable.

Dead Space was sold with a strong USP - Horror.
Dead Space 3 hasn't got any USP, its just 'stuff'. Competent stuff sure but its not anything special.

If games companies want to go around making decisions that in any other industry would be fiercely criticised, thats up to them. It just seems very simple to me to see that DS3 does not have the same marketability as the previous two games and has both pushed away fans and failed to do anything to bring in new customers.

This odd idea amongst publishers that watering down your franchise will somehow bring in customers continues to be barmy/ludicrous.

Aliens is selling cause of its brand name and frankly even if it is shit; its still promising to be an Aliens game, DS3 is basically saying 'Am not Dead Space but I'll keep the brand name thank you very much'. Absurd.

Crysis 3 1st and second place in germany. Something made me lol about this.

That's from last week, and it should actually be the first 3 spots, since the PC version is at No. 1 or 2. in the overall charts (this being Console only)

The reason is pretty simple, Crysis is a German game and it has a kind of home bonus there. Also unlike in other territories the franchise is very big there since the first game (because Germany being a PC centric market and the first game being PC only)

So if im reading that right..best selling Tomb Raider ever?

Is the UK market un-dead now?

Well with zomg's figures, it never was dead. Nintendo just had massive declines. We also have no idea about the digital market, so these charts are becoming even more useless in representing the market.

What does number one actually mean in the UK though? I was reading in the other thread the combined sales of the top 4 games in the UK for Feb was only 275,000. In comparison MGS:R did 309,000 in only one week in Japan. Japan has a bigger population obviously, but then Germany and France have bigger populations than the UK, but that's not reflected in sales.

This is true, zomg's figures showed this, but across last year we've had charts with horribly low numbers too, a sign that there's also the mid-budget component that is really cratering. But what's worse is that this year we're still having 20% drops compared to last year. March hopefully will be better than last year since there are many big release, and Tomb Raider is a great sign for this, though.
