American McGee gauging interest in potential Alice 3 Kickstarter.

From American McGee's Facebook:

Alice Fans,
Questions for you:
1) If we could get the rights from EA, would you play "Alice 3?"
2) If you'd play "Alice 3," would you back it on Kickstarter?
3) If you said "yes" to those two things, make some noise - I'm trying to gauge interest in case I happen to discuss this with EA during GDC in 2 weeks. The more interest there is, the more seriously they'll take the conversation.

Thanks to Brerlappin for the heads up.

This would be a fairly high budget game I'd say compared to other Kickstarter projects, it will need a lot of additional financing besides the Kickstarter. So, would we only pay for the licensing? Or would it even be as worse that EA agrees to fund it if they get part of the funding from Kickstarter?

I would like to see a next Alice, but don't want to back it.

I absolutely loved Madness Returns and I would happily chip in with some money but they must be asking for pretty big amount because the last game seemed like a quite big budget game.

If Mcgee and Spicy Horse get back for Alice 3 we will likely see one of the better platform adventure titles of the next generation.

Alice 2 was good guys.

Don't be nervous to play it.

It's good.

I can't even begin to imagine the budget needed to follow up on a game like Madness Returns.

Admittedly, yeah.

Wasn't he... sort of bitter and talking shit about EA after Madness Returns? I remember some drama from just last year.

I'm sure they're not gonna hold a grudge (business is business), but he can't have done himself any favors.

Alice Madness Returns is one of my Games of the Generation so I'd love to see more.
But it greatly depends on what kind of game he wants to make, what business model he chooses and other variables.

As long as it's story oriented I'm in for a high price.

I'd back it, but only if another studio makes the actual game and they just handle the art style and story.

Alice Madness Returns is the most boring game I've beaten this gen.

cheers for making the thread box of bunnies!

Ive never kickstarted a game before, but this, i would gladly chip in money for! Madness Returns is one of my games of the generation.

Also if anyone is on his facebook, point him towards this thread. I cant comment on anything he does as his friends list if full so i can only like stuff he posts.

I'd kickstart it if it were more of Madness Returns and less of the original game. One of the few times I've loved the sequel to a game I thought was overrated crap.

I was playing ALICE Madness Returns recently and goddamn the art direction was amazing. So many varied locations and color palettes. One of the best this gen, for sure.
And better looking hair than tressfx... ok, not really, but it looked amazing for what it was

The Alice games had the habit of being more stretched out than necessary but I fuckin' loved playing through them. One of the few games this gen that had a old school 3d platformy feel to it. People saying they need that middle ground between indie and AAA? ALICE was just that, and I loved them for it. I thought McGee was leaving this IP for good, so this is AWESOME news.

qft. Also, while it had problems, we don't get many real 3d platformers these days. Alice scratched itches.

Would prefer the platforming to be a little better this time. Maybe skip the Unreal Engine? I'd feel much more comfortable with a $30-40 price too.

I loved Alice 2, but I'd rather see him working with a new IP than buying the rights to Alice 3 on Kickstarter money & expecting to still be able to afford to make the thing.

I'd back it so long as the payment method is not paypal XO.

No thank you Mr McGee

Alice 2 was bland and boring to the extreme.

Then he can make Alice 3 better than 2 by taking into account what its shortcomings were.
Sequels can improve on their predecessors.

If it stays with the same style and gameplay as Madness Returns (and isn't for phones only) then it'd be the first Kickstarter project I'd contribute to.

I'd gladly pay if the third game promises to be trimmed a little better. Madness Returns really drags on and on, but I love the look and feel.

The thing is I do not think that they can get the amount of money that they would need for a new full Alice game.
I think it would at least be 12 mil just like psychonauts 2 would be 20 mil and not doable via kickstarter.

They may only need to part fund it via kickstarter? Use profits from akaniero for the rest maybe? Or they could just cut down ont he length of the game, or re-appropriate lots of the stuff that was cut from madness returns even.

I don't see how they could fund anything on the level of the second game, it would have to be dramatically (if not extremely) lessened in scope. Madness Returns wasn't even all that polished, I'd hate to see how something with a dramatically lower budget would turn out.

Apparently he already talked about his idea for a sequel last year.
"We have ideas and I have a whole story written up on Alice 3, and how to turn that into episodic online. It's called Alice in Otherland and basically it would allow Alice to go into the minds of all these characters she encounters and it opens up the possibility where you could play as Alice and you can enter into a players mind change the landscape and then basically psychologically adjust the character in doing so. Imagine an MMO where the missions aren't locations but they're people.
