After months of speculation, Samsung has finally revealed its latest oversized smartphones, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3. Larger than even Samsung's enormous 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2, both phones are low- to mid-range in terms of specifications. The larger Galaxy Mega has a 6.3-inch 720p display, LTE connectivity, 8GB or 16GB of storage, and a 1.7GHz dual-core processor, while the 5.8-inch model has a qHD display, HSPA connectivity, 8GB of storage, and a 1.4GHz dual-core processor. Both have IR blasters for controlling televisions, an 8-megapixel camera, 1.5GB of RAM, a microSD slot, and are running the latest version of Android, 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Pricing for the models isn't clear, but from the specifications we expect them to be cheaper than the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S 4. Some of Samsung's software features, including Air View and Pop-Up Play, are making their way over to the new devices. Samsung hasn't detailed exact availability, but says the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 will launch in Europe next month before gradually expanding to other territories. UberGizmo got an early look at the 6.3-inch model and was reasonably impressed — for scale, check out their comparison shot with a Galaxy Note II below. We'll reserve judgement until we get a chance to try the Galaxy Megas out for ourselves.

Low-mid range specs at those sizes? No thanks. I'll stick with my Note. And hopefully get an Xperia Z.

I like the size but those specs are kinda crappy. I think Sony is also coming with a 6" Xperia that has much better specs iirc. I'd wait for that one.

qHD at 5.8"? That's terrible. What are they thinking with these specs? Battery life isn't an issue, Note 2 has insane battery life. Pricing will be the key on how they're going to position these phones.

It seems ridiculous, but then a lot of people still buy them. I wonder how big a phone has to get before people start thinking it's too much.

No more phones with resolutions lower than 1080p. Get this bullshit out of here. And no 6.3 phones either. They are indeed, drunk as hell.

qHD on a screen that size. I nearly throw up just imagining it.

Why should phablet screen sizes be reserved for the ultra high end? What about the people who don't want to/can't afford to pay the asking price of a Note 2?

Both Galaxy Mega phones have low-mid end specs, so they'll command a low-mid end price range. I imagine they'll cost around the same amount as a Galaxy Grand.

In countries where people buy their phones upfront for full price and use a sim only contract (basically, most countries outside the US), this phone will clean up.

Travelling around Asia, every phone shop here is pushing the Galaxy Grand, and consumers seem to be loving it. I imagine it'll be the same with these phones.

"Indeed."
really?

Can people really walk comfortably with that in their pocket?

.

The first question that most people ask about those phones is: “does it fit in pants pockets?”. I’ve tried it (I wear 33/32 Levis jeans, for reference) and the conclusion is: yes it does fit. To be fair, the 6.3″ version of the Galaxy Mega is probably the largest smartphone that I can put in my pants pocket and sit with (and I can “feel” it at that point). The 5.8″ Galaxy Mega version should be perfectly manageable on the other hand. For women who put them in a purse, there’s really no problem at all.

Options are always good. Im speaking on them purely from my own personal perspective. Im not seriously upset that they exist. I'll just ignore them.

can't have those flithy poors getting big screened phones, they might make people think my expensive big screened phone is overpriced!

These are just the inbetween waits for the Galaxy Note 3.

The Note 3 will have top of the line processor, 2GB+ of RAM, a 1080p Amoled 6.3" screen, at the least.

Can't wait to get my Note 3.

It's only a matter of time before the tablet and phone streams cross.

This size nonsense is seriously like razors, where they keep adding more blades because they've stopped actually innovating. And that's a field where real life caught up with an Onion article.
