Buddy & Me: New Stretch Goals: Wii U Support, Girl Power, and More

Another 2D plattformer. Another Kickstarter. But screw that, it looks beautiful. Probably because a Metroid Prime level designer is involved. For iOS and Android so far. As usual, nuke if old.

A wise man once said, “don’t ever forget where you came from.” For the past few weeks, I’ve received a flood of questions and comments from journalists and Nintendo fans from the Metroid Prime days, asking whether or not we would consider a Nintendo version. The game’s characters and play would be a great fit in the Nintendo world, and the touch-screen gameplay would lend itself well to the Wii U’s unique controller. But most importantly, I’ve felt really touched at how enthusiastic and appreciative these loyal fans have been to reach out, to talk about how much those games meant to them, and remind me of some of the most inspiring and influential times of my career. Guys and gals, this one’s for you: We’ve added Wii U eShop support as an official Stretch Goal, at the $55,000 funding mark!

New Stretch Goal: Choose to Play as a Girl

The second most frequent question/comment we get asked about, is whether or not players can choose to be a girl. Even though we’d always planned to eventually get there (after we figured out customization for the Boy), we underestimated how many backers would love to have that choice now. And I can understand why… the universe of Buddy & Me was created for the kid in all of us, boys and girls alike. So we put our heads together, figured out what it would take, and made it happen. So again, by popular demand from our fans: a new Stretch Goal at $45,000, to be able to choose a Boy or a Girl player character. Check out our first concept image:

New Stretch Goal: Ziplines & Buddy Cannonball

Last but certainly not least, we’d like to expand on some of our gameplay mechanics, for more variety and depth. For the boy, we’d like to add functionality for the “Zipline”, where he grabs on and travels quickly to another part of the forest, collecting coins above and below along the way. We’d also like to add our favorite Buddy Assist, the “Cannonball”, where Buddy leaps up, swallows the player, then shoots him out across the level:

Holy shit, I was just about to make this thread. :P

Anyways, people, GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO! It's beautiful and made by a Metroid Prime dev. What more could you ask for?

I pledged $10. Looks very neat. Kinda of surprised only hearing about this now instead of 3 weeks ago (I mean in general).

Because they only made Wii U support clear with just a week left, why oh why couldn't they have decided from the beginning to do it? :(

Technically it's 7 days and 20 hours. ;)

It was because all of us Nintendo fans (me included!) wrote to them about how awesome it would be to see their game on the eShop, and they were probably blown away at the interest and were trying to find ways to get them to their goal after support had died down, so adding in an eShop version would get all of us Nintendo fans to pledge and get them to their goal! (best case scenario).

Initially pitched only for IOS and Android.

Discounting the PC/Linux audience is a big no-no for a Kickstarter like this, although it seems like they pared down their targets to make it more achievable for just those platforms (Android/IOS). Most of the big bucks and backers come from the massive PC audience. Even Ryan Payton and his bigger budget IOS game Republique Kickstarter only got the massive surge it needed when he confirmed that a PC version would be made eventually.

Last minute addition of the WiiU E-shop option is what makes the proposition much more viable now.

Ya, bummed I haven't heard about this till now. Stoked about the WiiU support. Seems like a game that can really thrive with off-screen play.

Hopefully this spreads fast enough, I'm posting it at the Wii Lobby at IGN Boards (YEARS since I was last there). Go Nintendo posted it.

i hope no one is going to take what i'm about to say in the wrong way, but why do you guys want and endless runner on a home console?

this kind of games are great on the go to kill 10 minutes while you in line at the doctor but i do not really get the appeal of something like this on a home console...

Metroid Prime dev working on this means that I HAVE to support this in any way possible. It looks awesome, and I'd love to get a chance to play it.

I have a common complaint about many of these new "Wii U Stretch Goals" added to recent Kickstarters...

I might well consider adding a pledge to a title if I knew that my pledge would only be collected if a Wii U port were actually going to arrive.

Adding a stretch goal is problematic, as the pledges will go through as long as the base requirement is collected, meaning that my pledge could very well end up being "useless" from my perspective.

I understand the logic, but I don't see why a "stretch goal" would get platform-specific donors to jump in. Quite frankly, I'm not going to pledge towards the vague goal of "it might appear on your platform of choice"...

I mean, I know I can cancel pledges, but I don't want to end up donating for something I'd never play.

Sounds certain that it will happen to me.

Base goal is $40,000.

Wii U goal is $55,000.

The result of this is that it seems pointless for me to donate unless it hits $55,000 or looks very close to it.

Perhaps I'm not a good Kickstarter -- although I -did- donate the minimum to Terra Incognita after they updated saying that all backers at all levels would receive a copy, even of the Wii U version.

(I guess what I'm saying is that "stretch goals" of alternate platforms seems problematic to me.)

Off TV gameplay during commercials?

The point of Kickstarter is to get a game funded (or in your case, get it to a certain platform). If you're going to donate after the goal is reached in order to just get the game, you might as well just wait and see for it to come out on the Wii U to buy it.

No I mean it'll happen if the stretch goal is reached, but I understand that if you pledge and it passes the initial goal but not the Wii U goal than it's worthless.

You can always revoke your pledge if it doesn't look like a Kickstarter will hit whatever stretch goal is relevant to you.

I agree completely.

Not much momentum at the moment, luckily some key places have reported on it, like Nintendolife, anyone daring to send it to other sites like Destructoid and such if they haven't posted it already?

Increased a little bit since last night. Even if it never makes it to Wii U, looks like a fun game to be released anyways if it hits the initial goal.

Aside from the art I honestly don't see the appeal of this game and it's a bit of an ill fit on consoles when it's basically a one-button game. The "buddy system" in its current form is just dynamic level-design. Not to mention, Rayman Jungle Run is cheaper and probably better than this will be.

On a tangent, of all the Kickstarter games heading to Wii U which is likely to be the first to be released? Cloudberry Kingdom?

I really want to dig this game (nice art style) but I just can't get into endless runners. Their design seems originally born out of control problems on touch screens, and they remove the self-paced exploration in platformers that I love.

48 hour final stretch.

I've met or worked with some of these guys. The game looks great. I hope they can pull it off.

Btw, can't a mod add "Kickstarter: ..." to the thread? I feel like people are missing this is one and that it only has 32 hours to go. Get behind it guys!!!

Can't donate, but will probably get this if it comes out. Looks really good.

But again, why 7 days?

EDIT: Wait i just saw the video, is this just time tapping game? if so then pass. I've had enough of those.
