Season 7 Episode 20 - Direct link

Discussion about the Xbox 180 as well as Last of Us (spoiler free).

We're not sure if a reversal of its policy will lead to a reversal of fortunes, but Microsoft has taken unprecedented action in response to overwhelming negative sentiment by removing the XBox One's DRM. This solves one very important issue with the new system, but leaves us wondering if maybe we've only seen the first of many adjustments to come between now and the release of the console this fall.

This should have been our chance to talk in detail to one another about The Last of Us, but out of respect to those hosts who couldn't attend this show and the many listeners who haven't quite finished the game, we're leaving spoilers out of the conversation for the time being. We made a deliberate exercise of talking at length without talking in depth, and it's a testament to the quality of the game that there was still so much to say.

This is not a podcast that gets much if any attention on GAF. It's been recorded on and off (mostly on) since 2007, for a while it was Evil Avatar Radio, but now it's back to IGC. They record weekly and are also broadcast on local radio in Alabama. As fan podcasts go I find it pretty darn good and it's a nice break from the rather homogenous SF-based games writer's perspective.

We appreciate you sticking with us through the years and enjoying it. We wish it was something we got paid for and could devote all of our time to, but maybe that's part of what makes us different from the homogeny you mentioned.

Thanks, I'll give it a listen.

Hope you like it and by all means let us know what you think.

Dude! I finally got my account activated and approved. Feels good to finally post here instead of lurking and trying to keep up with threads.

Also, thanks for the comments, had no idea you listened (regularly?).

Well, seems a bunch of CoG people are over here, or maybe a bunch of our listeners are over here. Never knew. Thanks for continually tuning in.

I'm listening to them now. Glad I caught it before it gets sent back in the pages of NeoGaf

Glad you did too! We do this every single week so maybe we can make this an official thread for the show or something. I don't know...I'm new to GAF so I don't know how such things work, but whatever...glad to be here and always glad to find new listeners.

Ya I think a lot of us cross post from CoG and I am stoked you got up and activated it can take a bit.

Yep I listen to every single one. I just usually don't post unless I disagree:) Which I rarely do. But I do go out of my way to spread the news when you guys do end up recording a new podcast.

This is really good. These guys are smart and bring a lot of information to the table to back up their arguments.
Subscribed. This will be a weekly listen for me.

Glad to see we are on the same page with these things.

Sometimes I miss you CoG people.

Wow, man. I only get updates from you through Linked In. Hope things have been well. Come back to CoG if you ever feel like it...unless, of course, CoG was why you left to begin with.

Thanks to you, as well. We appreciate it. We have two hours (actually less when you take out the commercials) to make our points and talk about what's going on. It really forces us to cut the fat and focus on our topics.

Good podcast! Liked the discussion. Couldn't find you guys on itunes tho.

Yeah...the iTunes thing. We're not sure what is going on there but we can't seem to get back on. However, here's a trick:

Copy this: http://www.ingamechat.net/?feed=podcast
Go to iTunes, click File, go to subscribe to podcast.
Paste it, hit OK.

I think this is their iTunes link, but I can't confirm it because it's not available in my region:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=121060914

It's available everywhere but our featured page on iTunes can't seem to stay up. Last I checked with Jeremy (Straximus) it was something to do with our code. Not exactly sure as to the issue, but we are there. Just have to use that little trick I posted above.

Listening to xbone episode. Man this is a breath of fresh air.

I agree. I listen to talk radio pretty much all day while I work and this is along the same lines for me. I don't feel like fast forwarding because one of the guys goes off on some tangent for 5-10 minutes. It's clear and concise which simply is unheard of in video game podcasts, hell a lot of podcasts in general.

So this episode was good. I loved the passion in the discussion.
Please keep posting when there is a new podcast as a reminder :)

Technically it is talk radio :P that's why they can't curse.

Will Durant said:
“If you wish to converse with me,” said Voltaire, “define your terms.” How many a debate would have been deflated into a paragraph if the disputants had dared to define their terms! This is the alpha and omega of logic, the heart and soul of it, that every important term in serious discourse shall be subjected to the strictest scrutiny and definition. It is difficult, and ruthlessly tests the mind; but once done it is half of any task.

I love it when a person takes time and care in defining their terms. It's rarely done, and it's admirable when it is.

Great episode. I subbed. I am checking out the forums as well :).

So I listened to the whole (almost) 3 hour podcast and the one thing that I came away with which I 110% agree with is that the XboxOne tries to give a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. It's just another smart set-top box that will play some games. My Roku Box can do the same thing.

Well minus the:
Skype (No one in my family or circle of friends uses it so meh)
Fantasy Football updates (I use Yahoo anyhow, not ESPN so meh)
Internet Explorer (I can use my phone if I need to look up something away from my computer so meh)
The ability to switch from game to tv in seconds (well actually I can hit the "HDMI" button and will take less time than voice a command so meh)

The "snap" feature is nice. I wonder if you could watch live tv and play your video game at the same time using snap. Now that would be something I'd be interested in. Also in the podcast, the guys mentioned that he didn't display DVR capabilities which is a problem. You didn't convince people with set-top boxes and/or home theater PCs to add the XboxOne to the same TV screen.

I said this before with the PS4 and its press conference. You can bring up the cons and speculated cons of the console, but at least they didn't try to make the PS4 something that its not. It's a video game console nothing more. Yes there are neat features like the share button, but at the end of the day, it's main purpose is to provide entertainment through video games. If you wanna watch tv, you don't need the aid of Smartglass or your console to do it. Just watch it with a press of a button.

Amazing podcast, not because I agreed with their points, but they took the time to explain them. And the fact that I enjoy listening to smart people talk about video games.

Listening to xbone episode. Man this is a breath of fresh air.

Good discussion. Will look forward to more.

Thank you both. We broadcast live EVERY Saturday night from 6 to 8 central time and then get the show up a day or two later for people to download who can't make it to the live broadcasts.

Exactly. We are actually on FM radio at a talk station. It's News Talk 93.1 WACV-FM out of Montgomery, Alabama. It's the deep south so Monday through Friday is A LOT of republican heavy political talk shows, but for 2 hours on the weekend - it's gaming discussion. We confuse the locals a bit, we think. Regardless, we're glad you like the show and the format.

So this episode was good. I loved the passion in the discussion.

Will do. We have an RSS feed you can post in your reader or whatever you may use to keep up with updates and even if not, we'll be sure to put a note in the thread (or make a new one if that's how it needs to be done) whenever we have a new episode available. Also, we have a twitter and facebook page that updates as well.

Thanks for giving us some feedback and we're glad you like the show. We've been doing this since 2007 and it can be a bit scary to reveal yourself to an entirely new group of people who aren't familiar with how we go about ourselves. It's also extremely rewarding to know that what we are doing actually works. And does so beyond just the group of people who post on our forums and join us for the live shows in the chat room. We really appreciate your comments and thanks for giving us a listen.

I've listened to these guys for years now. They're still one of my very favorite shows, and there are some amazing interviews in their back catalog from years past. I've probably mentioned IGC in every "name me some good podcasts" thread since 2008.

Oh wow, so this is what an actual honest conversation about the Xbox One unveiling sounds like. Quite a revelation after listening to Giantbomb and Weekend Confirmed's evaluations.

I just want to say again how refreshing this was. I think I liked it so much because of the knowledge brought forward to back up their points...even when I didnt agree.
I also really liked how they seemed to know about everything. Xbox, Playstation, WiiU Steam, OnLive.

I also wanted to virtually high five you guys when you talked about Steam and how we put up with certain things on Steam because (and Im paraphrasing here) "we paid like 5 bucks for everything in our library". Its so true. When I see someone say that Xbox One is just like Steam, I really wonder how much they use Steam.

Nooooooo! No crossing the streams! My worlds must remain apart!

Love In-Game Chat, been listening to them for years, frequently agree with James and recommend the podcast and the related site, colony of gamers, to everyone. I'm Dostoyevsky over there.

And yes, this kind of level-headed and insightful discussion from average gamers puts Giant Bomb to shame. And ESPECIALLY the abhorrent Cheap Ass Gamer podcast from today. So fucking clueless.

It's a shame this isn't on iTunes.

Just a guess, but if you are using the iOS podcasts app, you can paste the direct link in the search box at the top

Edit: whoops, sorry for the double post

Actually, if you are reading this thread in Safari on the iPhone, you can just click on this link:

http://www.ingamechat.net/?feed=podcast

...the Podcast App launches automatically, and will automatically ask you if you want to subscribe. I just did it, and that's how it worked for me. I'm listening to it right now.

Thanks, OP. This was my first listen to IGC and I was honestly floored by the level of insight in this discussion. They just shot to the top of my podcast list.

By the way, I lost it uncontrollably when James referred to 'Beyond: Two Souls' as
"sweaty Juno"
Lol.

Oddly enough I was just going through our back catalog the other night and happened to stop on our interview with Nolan North. However, I think our biggest draw was when we had on David Hayter. Thanks for sticking with us since then and we appreciate the kind words.

Thanks for listening and giving us your feedback. To put us on par with those other shows is....well, wow!

Thanks! High five right back! We're also glad you really like the show.

The virus is spreading! Once again we're put in and elevated above company we highly regard as professionals on a different level than we are. And it's amazing to see that. Thanks for listening and really...that's some very high level praise there. We appreciate it.

Cool, I was looking for good gaming podcasts the other day. Giving it a listen right now.

I just did it, and that's how it worked for me. I'm listening to it right now.

Thanks for listening! Hope you enjoy the show. We're currently working on the iTunes thing and hoping to have something solid by early next week at the latest, perhaps.

This is great. I used to listen to these guys way back when they were Evil Atavar Radio around 2007.

Wow...that would put you back at the very beginning. Thanks for sticking with us or possibly coming back to us. Either way, we're glad to have you.

Thanks, OP. This was my first listen to IGC and I was honestly floored by the level of insight in this discussion. They just shot to the top of my podcast list.

An honor and we hope to keep up the momentum and stay at the top of your list. Thank you.

Listening to this and damn, you guys speak really well and direct to the point. A great podcast

Thanks. This is a spare time gig for us. We aren't paid for it and we aren't very well known among the publishers and studios, but ever so slowly we are trying to be. I'm going to E3 again this year and plan on securing plenty of interviews for the show in the coming months or, at the very least, getting our name out there so people WANT to be on the show or WANT to have us talk about their game. We've no allegiances though there are some studios we carry a torch for (Naught Dog, Zen Studios, Twisted Pixel, etc.), but even then we aren't on a fast track or direct line to get their games or get them on our show. We just hope we make a good show every week that people enjoy listening to. Glad to see so many people like us.

Just an update; I listened and thoroughly enjoyed it! You guys are great! Subscribed and will check it out weekly!

Glad you liked it!

We're broadcasting live tomorrow from 6 to 8 central if anyone cares to listen live and join in the chat room. All the info for that can be found at our website linked to in the first post.

New episode is up:

Much has been said, by this show and others, about the supposed schemes and restrictions weÂ’ll face with the new consoles when they arrive later this year. ThereÂ’s a lot of (forgivable) wailing and gnashing of teeth when you consider the worst of all possible outcomes, and what effect itÂ’s likely to have on our darling hobby. But there are reasons to be optimistic. There are reasons to believe our pastime will be improved in many, if not most, respects, and that this will be true for all platforms, if not all players. ItÂ’s certainly best to remain skeptical as all hell right now, but the bad dream has hardly come true, and good news is still a possibility.
