Ossu! Tatakae! Ouendan! is the best game for the Nintendo DS

Jonnyram already put up a thread with impressions, but I thought I should start a new one with a more exciting title to get people's attention.

I've spent about an hour with this game, and it's far and away the most fun I've had with my Nintendo DS. Anyone who likes music games like Gitaroo Man or Um Jammer Lammy owes it to themselves to check this game out. It's from Gitaroo Man staff and so far seems every bit as good--and from me, that's damn high praise.

Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! ("Hey! Fight! Cheer Squad!") is a rhythm-action game about a cheer squad that goes around Japan helping people in need. Though they wear high school cheering uniforms (in Japan, cheerleaders wear long black trenchcoats, are usually male, and "cheer" by screaming at the top of their lungs like it's the end of the world), they don't seem to be affiliated with any particular high school. There seem to be a lot of people in trouble in Japan, so the Ouendan has their work cut out for them.

Gameplay consists of three basic moves: tap, trace, and spin. The basic "notes" you hit are on-screen circles surrounded by contracting "rings." When the ring hits the circle, you tap. Some of these circles are connected to one another, and hitting all the circles in a "phrase" results in bonus points. Sometimes, after tapping a circle, gamers will need to "trace" the circle (now a ball) through a line. This is similar to the "hold and analog stick" movements of Gitaroo Man. Finally, sometimes you have to spin a circle around really, really fast. Like most rhythm action games, from these simple beginnings come devious rhythms and patterns that must be defeated.

Music in the game is licensed J-ROCK. It's played by soundalikes, but good soundalikes; I couldn't tell the difference. The songs all have full lyrics and decent sound quality. It's not CD-quality, of course, but neither does it sound like super muffled N64 samples or lousy MIDI recreations. It's definitely the best sound and music on the DS so far.

One of the coolest features of the game is the "dynamic manga" on the top screen. As you play through the song, your performance affects the story of the person you're trying to help that's unfolding on the top screen. For example, the first stage has you helping 3rd year student trying to study for difficult entrance exams. His family won't shut up, he can't study, and he calls upon the OUENDAN!! They cheer him up with a rousing rock song and powerful routine. As you play, each member of the family arrives to do their part to help (or hinder) the son. I did pretty well, so the mother made him an energy-filled dinner, the father stayed out of his way, and the younger son helped him exercise while studying, so he could power his mind and body together. At the end of the song, the student travels to the Big Board, number in hand, to find out if he made it ... success! "Gameplay" animations are interspersed with short, fast "story" segments that unfold at a breakneck pace over just a handful of musical measures bars. The only thing I've ever seen like this before is the "video manga" in the FLCL anime. It's dynamic and hilarious, but you really need to be able to read Japanese to get the most out of it.

Basically, this game is totally awesome. It's funny, it's fun and challenging, the music is awesome, the stories are adorable in that special music game way, and the dynamic manga and overall presentation is really unique and cool. THIS IS THE BEST GAME ON THE NINTENDO DS. Hopefully it will come to America.

Check out neo's gameplay movies. Thanks, neo!

This game is gonna be huge when word of mouth gets around.

Sorry to hijack your previous thread, but it was mostly people asking for Pac n Roll impressions. ;P Ossu! Tatakae! Ouendan is the real deal--it needs more exposure and fast.

Hmmm you think it would be possible to do an on the spot speach translation of the video manga parts? If so I might import this and get my girlfriend to translate....... If not, is the game still as much fun without the video manga? o.O If it is I'll probably get it anyway. Sounds fun. ^^;

Maaaybe. We're talking sub-second on-screen splashes, though. The manga goes by really, really fast. Still, she could probably handle it, if you can find a way to play while she can still see the top screen.

The game would definitely still rock without being able to read the top screen, but it does add a fair amount if you can.

edit: oops :p

Hehe cool, I'll try it out. :) Hopefully she'll be able to pull it off, if not she will be able to tell me what happened afterwards...... Probably suck out all the humour that way though. XD

Man, thanks for the even more energetic impressions jackfrost! My copy should be here tomorrow. NCSX just recieved their shipment! I CAN'T WAIT.

When I found out about this game being by iNiS I flipped out and tried to tell people, but it seems I was the last to know. I met Keiichi Yano a few years back at a Seaman/Yoot Saito panel at the GDC. His english was so good, I didn't realize he was from Japan. (We were talking about random games and I told him I just picked up Parappa 2 and Guitaroo Man at the same time because of a Circuit City sale and CC had Guitaroo Man for $39 vs. $49 like everywhere else.) Seemed like a pretty cool guy.

I e-mailed him about OTO asking about the game and if it was import friendly and he replied, remembering me. I sent him a link to the other (and now this) thread, hopefully he'll check out the threads and (hopefully!) post in this one or something. It'd be nice to see them do well. After seeing the game get 9's and 10's from Famitsu Cube (I think that was the mag), it'd be cool if this was a big hit for iNiS.

I need to go down to Users Side to make sure they're getting it. Was there any preorder bonuses for the game?

This isn't the Oakenfold song, right?

Please let this game come the US. I don't even care about EU DS releases, since without region locks I'm just gonna import anyway since its cheaper.

I just want an english language option so I can appreciate the games humour for myself. Just annoying me that Japan gets all this cool software that yes, surprisingly, the rest of the world wants to sample.

This is fucking phenomenal. I just played "Melody," and I really see now how these simple gameplay mechanics can be combined into tricky, fun patterns that go with the music.

Yeah, all my previous posts were after just a handful of songs. I've cleared about 9 now, and the patterns are getting fucking HARSH. Linda Linda took me many, many tries. There's a LOT of really good music, too. I gotta go to sleep now, so I leave continual posting as you get progressively more and more obsessed with the best Nintendo DS game in your capable hands.

The US DS line-up may be pretty crappy, but I'll be damned if the Japanese line-up isn't phenomenal. I've already mentioned this many times, but I'm traveling overseas for the month of August and will be picking up a DS along with an entire DS library. You guys should do the same.

I don't think this game will come to the USA. If it does I will be surprised. reason, it has too much stuff related to Japanese culture. the only way it would work and sell in America is if they replaced the male Japanese cheerleaders with american female cheerleader, and replaced the J pop songs with some songs that Americans knew. too many hardcore gamers forget that regular people would not accept alot of the games we do. Also , look how long it ook Nintendo to bring over games that ddin't have cultural differences to the USA, Like fire Emblem.

And Band-Brothers was one of the best DS games, wasn't it?

Um...please stop talking about Band Brothers. You're making me uncomfortable.

I love music games and I didn't like Band Brothers. Others have enjoyed it more, but I don't think it was "one of the best" by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe closer to launch. But this thread is not about Band Brothers, it's about the incredible facerockery of OSSU! TATAKAE! OUENDAN! THE SOONER YOU ACCEPT THAT, THE BETTER.

ORDERED.

This will be my first import game in a LONG time, but the double team impressions from Jonnyram and JackFrost couldn't keep me away!!!

Yep, after reading the glowing impressions from both of them and then downloading neo's videos, I broke down and ordered it right away. It looks like it's hilarious and loads of fun to play... it can't come soon enough! :)

My copy shipped from Play-Asia yesterday. It should be here within a few days. Sucks that the music is sung by soundalikes. The songlist was a pretty big selling point to me. Never played Gitaroo Man, so it sounds like I'm still in for a treat anyways.

I finally got to a stage that really took some effort. I must have died like ten times on "One Night Carnival." It was awesome though. I expected nothing less from that bastard Keiichi.

Shit.

Up until now, I've REFUSED to import any game where I would lose a lot of the experience in the translation, even if I knew the game would never make it to America. It was the principal of the thing. I didn't wanna import a game and miss a significant part of what makes it awesome.

This is making me reconsider.

I (badly) want it, but dammit the whole manga half of the game is gonna be lost on me!

I don't know; you can get the story just by looking at the pictures. The text isn't really crucial to enjoyment of the game.

I think they could bring this out here. It might require all new songs. But they did it for Donkey Konga.

Understanding some of it and having fun is better than not playing it ever!

Playing imported games is the best.
It feels like you are 5 years old all over again. You don't know what is going on, but you are having fun… most of the time.

Sadly, most of the fun titles on DS are Japan exclusive.
I have never imported so many games before for any other system.

Sounds weird. Nintendo should bring this over, though. Oh hell no why would NoA want to bring out or coerce third parties to bring out a game that shows off the DS? Order 50 low budget console ports with tacked on touch screen functionality, stat!

Great review.

After all the positive user reviews, the high Famitsu score, and the awesome media I've seen, I think I'm gonna have to head to China Town after getting paid next week and pick this game up.
