Never installed an app like this before....do I want to use the "Package installer" or "Verify and install"?

Anything new besides the smart folders thing? Uninterested in that, my goal is always Inbox Zero so it's just more tabs to click through in pursuit of that goal.

Edit: Sigh...still no multiple swipe options. I really want something like "swipe left to archive, swipe right to delete".

You and me both, man.

I was having trouble getting it to show me the categories for my inbox. I had to go to my desktop Gmail settings, save what I already had enabled, then open it again on my phone and it worked fine. Having different setups on my phone and desktop was driving me a little bit crazy, so I'm glad this finally came out.

God I want this so bad. Annoying to have the new system on desktop and the old Gmail app on my phone.

Into my veins. Now...

Overall, I like the new update, but here are two things that bug me:

1) You either get the giant ass ugly icons or you lose the ability to multi select. I miss my checkbox on the side.

2) The toolbar was moved from the bottom to the top. I wish they would have left it at the bottom.

I do like how you can just pull from the left side of the screen the panel that has all the folders and your accounts. Google should take note that the Inbox should be like this on the web version where if you have categories, you see your categories and if not, you get an Inbox. The Inbox is weird when you're using categories in the web version.

Tablet or phone though? On a phone I feel like it's taking up too much real estate.

Both. I think they're a nice touch, and the fact that the letter represents the first letter of the sender's name is cool too.

Also dat pull to refresh. Unnghhh so sexy

Such a clever and brilliant way to pull to refresh. Genius.

I hate it. Why can't they do a bounce back? It's the best form of doing a pull down refresh.

No, it isn't. Where is there bounce back in Android? This isn't iOS.

Surprised it came to android before iOS seeing as iOS got the newer maps, gmail, etc before android(unless I am mistaken).

That's not Android.

Well I said apps. Google is behind on this front. In fact they do it in different ways that it's annoying. The patent is invalid, and there's no reason for them not to do it at this point. It's a much better touch feedback response. Facebook app does it as well.

Pretty good. Not seeing it as a big upgrade over the last version though, which I thought was fine.

i wish they would pay some attention to the email app

i have to use non gmail accounts and its horrible on android. plus every vendor insists on making the email app EVEN WORST

Yep, one day I am going to migrate all of my hotmail newsletters etc to gmail do I don't have to deal with the horrible email app again

I think the color push is just as good as the bounce. I'm glad Google is shoring their apps up to be consistent. What other apps do is wrong as the bounce makes no sense on Android. If you want the bounce to be integrated OS wide, OK, I understand your position then.

if i install this what happens when the gmail app gets updated? do i need to uninstall gmail before it will update again via the play store?

I would love to see it system wide as I think it's the best visual feedback when you've hit the end and I think pull to refresh is a great gesture as well. The first time I ever used Android in the browser, it was jarring. The blue line was barely noticeable and I couldn't tell I had reached the end because there was little to no feedback. Even looking at Chrome and stock browser now, they both just stop with no visual indicator. Most of Google's apps don't give you much feedback at all unfortunately. I'm glad to see Google trying to make things more consistent, but they still have a ways to go to get that polish. I still think bounce back should be used whenever appropriate because a sudden stop is just terrible.

but what happens when this isn't the latest version anymore? are you stuck at this version until you manually uninstall it?

It'll prompt you that there's an update. It's the one reason I stopped using the Amazon app store because there would be conflicts since stores couldn't tell where the app came from.

Is there some kind of trick to batch select?
Also to delete without having to us a sub menu?

Hold down on one item, and it'll highlight blue. From that point, you've enabled multi select and can tap as many items as you want. Then hit the trash can.

Yeah I thought that I had to hold down on the item to select it, instead you can just tap large letter on the left, rinse repeat for multiple items, then delete from there.

Installed on both N7 and Nexus S.
