I used to be huge on anime when I was in high school. However, once I started college, I kinda fell off the wagon, and every time I try to get back on, I feel overwhelmed by the amount of new shows that come out every season. In addition, when I scan through the new shows that people seem to be talking about, they all sound awful. What are some good recent shows that would get me back into anime?

For reference, I like horror, suspense, action, thriller, and all that kinda stuff. Things I don't like: comedy (imo, anime tries hard but is just not funny), creepy porn-esque stuff, school life, most slice of life shows.

Also, here's my MAL: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/War

I'm a bit confused. You say you don't like school stuff or slice of life, but you gave K-On, Clannad and Toradora! high scores. I guess shows similar to those are fine with you?

Anyway there is Wolf Children by director of Summer Wars which you seem to have liked. There is also Garden of Words by Shinkai, who also made 5 Centimeters per Second which you seem to like as well.

edit: Aku no Hana is also great stuff. Gargantia is a good choice to get your mecha needs.

Legends of galactic heroes, rose of versailles and other "older" stuff... From new shows that i saw psycho pass was great you should check it out

Have you seen Monster? That might fit all of the genres you're into.

Shigurui: Death Frenzy is something you might like too, if you don't mind shows with slow build-ups. Putting it vaguely, it's a story about the dark side of martial arts.

Gunslinger Girl if you're into stuff like Leon The Professional and Hannah.

That's all for now.

I'm pretty picky with my anime as well. That said, I feel 100% good about recommending Serial Experiments Lain and Tokyo Godfathers. The latter is on Netflix.

It sucks but most anime is just those things now. You still get some nice choices though. Hunter x Hunter, Death Note, Psycho Pass, Monster, Zettai Karen Children THE UNLIMITED, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

We have a dedicated anime thread where you can find synopses for the currently-airing shows: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=593226

For horror I would recommend checking out Flowers of Evil/Aku No Hana, though that's more psychological than gore or whatever.

It is also a good idea to check out the anime of the year threads:

To me it's all really bad these days, but there's probably only been 10 anime series i've ever liked in my whole life. Attack on Titan is good, the best in years has been HELLSING ULTIMATE.

Yeah, I guess I should clear that up. I watched those back when I was more into anime, so at the time, I thought they were really good and really enjoyed them. When I recently tried to get back into anime by watching some similar shows, I realized I couldnt really get into them.

tbf K-ON and Toradora! are cream of the crop in that kind of anime.

Thanks for the links, man. Gonna try to watch Hyouka and Flowers of Evil.

Just some quick suggestions for ya, just after scanning your mal. Also, none of these are "recent" but I didn't see them on your list.

Broken Blade (mecha show, good action, cool setting. 6 hour-long episodes/parts)
Shadow Skill (lots and lots of martial arts, cool setting, sometimes dumb and cliche but fun show)
Coyote Ragtime Show (cool heist-cops-vs-outlaws-in-outer-space setting, interesting premise, fun characters)
Now and Then, Here and There (very dark fantasy setting, tragic and sometimes hard to watch)
Romeo x Juliet (a very loose adaptation of Shakespeare's play. Really good re-imagining. Suggesting based on your apparent like of some romance-oriented shows.)
Gunsmith Cats (very "western animation" styled OVA set in Chicago. Almost like a proto-Bebop in some respects. Very accessible. Watches like a western buddy cop flick almost.)

Seriously lack of Gundam or Macross there. Just a handful Mecha genre in general. Not into those stuffs?

I could probably just tell you to watch all of Gundam UC and Macross entries, there, waste you a good 3-4 months.

If you want action suspense and thriller then watch Hunter x hunter, either one is great but sounds like you would enjoy 1999 version more since it has a darker tone then 2011 version.

Switch to 2011 for Greed island arc.

Horror? Suspense? Thriller? I see you really liked Higurashi?

Shiki is the anime for you, vampires(not those romanticized vampires you usually see in anime) preying on a small secluded village until SHIT HITS THE FAN.

Mecha is more of a setting than a genre - you're find shows with all sorts of tones and focuses with mechs in them.

Gundam-wise, the 3 movies that compress the original Mobile Suit Gundam series are a good pick.

For something more recent that still does interesting things with a mecha setting, Daiguard is a nice classic that really brings home the notion that it's not about the machines, it's about the people and their circumstances.

Real talk:

Ignore all the suggestions in this thread, regardless of potential merit.

Go on animenewsnetwork and look up your favorite shows. Click on the names of the animation studios, directors, and some of the key animators, or other staff whose contributions made you like the shows. Check out the descriptions for a couple of things that studio / person worked on, and see if anything catches your eye. Branch out from there by doing the same thing with the new shows you have discovered that styled your flavor.

I am honestly baffled at all those people who are recommending Attack on Titan. Are you guys planning to fend him off Anime again?

Some of those recommendations are quite disgusting to be frank. OP get ready to hate Anime again.

I love slice of life but you said you don't so I'll get my one slice of life recommendation out of the way: Give Azumanga Daioh a shot if you haven't seen it.

+1 Tokyo Godfathers. I watched that on a whim a little while ago and it was just fantastic; the plot is both beautiful and unique. You have Paprika on your list, which I actually think is one of Satoshi Kon's weaker movies. Another must-watch of his is, of course, Perfect Blue.

You listed Byousoku 5 Centimeter, which is my favorite movie. Makoto Shinkai has done some other great stuff as well. I would recommend, in descending order of quality: Kotoba no Niwa, Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo, and Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho. I don't consider his shorter stuff to be particularly compelling but those three are all great, with Kotoba no Niwa nearly approaching the quality of Five Centimeters.

It’s the best anime since Death Note. Deal with it.

Shigurui Hyper realistic story about samurai. Very bloody and wish they would of put out more.

BerserkGoldenAgeArc-Movie1-MainVisual-WithLogoCopy.jpg

Berserk There is an Anime series from years ago and they just released 3 movies that are simply amazing. It's a Dark Fantasy / Thriller / Drama that is leagues above anything else out there. I recommend reading the Manga for this one as well.

Sword of the Stranger Another samurai anime movie done by studio Bones. The animation is amazing and the story is really good.

Mushi-Shi It's a series about a guy traveling around able to see these spirits and tries to help the people involved. It's more a subtle drama/thriller with some beautiful art.

claymore-english-dub-complete-any-dvd-player-7600.jpg

Claymore It's basically Berserk Lite with a female protagonist. Never read the manga but the anime was decent enough.

I know you said you don't like Comedy but I'm gonna put these two down here because they've always been favorites of mine.
GTO ( Great Teacher Onizuka)
Golden Boy

I like how you are using ''Deal with it'' like it is a universally acknowledged opinion. In fact, I'll say; Its the worst ''big'' Anime since Death Note. Deal with it.

I have written a lot of impressions on how bad Attack on Titan on Anime thread. The short version is: Its bad.

OP, Checking your list; You seem to have watched most of the good Animes; But, you should look into a more Mature shows from now on. That is the natural progression for someone like you.

Have you watched Gankatsou?

EDIT: You have watched Darker than Black 2 and not the first one? WHAT IS WRONG WOTH YOU?

EDIT2: and you have watched Summer wars and not The Girl that Leap through Time?

FIX THAT OP!

My “Deal with it” was a joke. Lighten up.

Theres a bunch of shows that people have already mentioned here, so I won't repeat. My picks would be:

- Puella Magi Madoka Magica
- Black Jack OVA series - Cool medical show about an unlicensed Doctor who charges high sums of money to perform amazing surgeries.

Don't let the Madoka's outer appearance fool you, I originally didn't expect this to be good, or all that surprising. Its a good show and plays on the magical girl genre well. It's not a creepy 'cute girls' show. Its fairly short as well, so its not a huge time investment.
