Riptide GP 2 - Closest thing to WaveRace you'll get on Android (+iOS). Anyone try it?

So, Vector Unit, developer of Hydro Thunder Hurricane (360) and various popular Android and iOS games, released Riptde GP 2 on Android today.

(I think it looks better in motion, and my screenshots aren't at the highest graphics settings, so check out the video.)

I bought it and played it, and it's actually pretty awesome. This game has a lot of content, more than its predecessor, Riptide GP. It contains a career mode (with a few race types like elimination), online multiplayer, a vehicle store and upgrades, and a secret mode that will be added in a future update. (The secret mode is supposedly a "big-ticket list item" that "will extend the gameplay experience a ton."). Based on my impressions and the impressions in various reviews, this game is actually a really great, near console quality game that is very much worth the $3.

Personally, when comparing it to an actual full-priced console game like Wave Race, I don't think it has that high level of polish. The graphics are definitely great, and the sound that is there is good, but the sound is a bit limited, IMO. I miss the little things like a "3-2-1-GO" at the beginning and win/lose music. The gameplay is also a bit limited, in that the only "special" things you can do are trick and boost, and the trick system, while it contains a lot of stunts, isn't really as fun as other games of its type.

But for a $3 game, those are minor nitpicks. It's great otherwise, and I suggest you try it out. It's only a 46 MB download.

Oh, and the game supports any HID controller you may have. I played with my PS3 controller, but if you have a 360 controller, any USB controller, or something like a MOGA, the game will play great with it, using the left/right triggers to brake/accelerate and the analog thumbsticks for steering and tricks.

So... anyone try it? Impressions?

Tegra 3 is missing only dynamic shadows and possibly a High option on Shaders, which you can't turn on in the advanced option of the graphics. Speaking of which, it's pretty great they let you choose from many settings and resolution in order to get the game playing better on your device.

Nexus 7 and it's hovering around the 30s, during jumps on 40s, and on more crowded areas with lots of wave effects in the 25s. Overclocked GPU to 486MHz and CPU to 1.5GHz. Everything turned on, and Shaders on Low instead of Medium, because I couldn't notice much difference there.

It's so much better than the first. And the multiplayer works like a charm! And the achievements are a nice little bonus too.

My non-Tegra device (US Galaxy S III with Qualcomm graphics) is missing the same things, plus I can't disable the "physical wakes" option.

For some reason, I remember reading that the game does have Tegra 3 optimizations, but since your Tegra 3 device and my non-Tegra 3 device disable the same features, I am thinking that it doesn't.

Maybe some performance optimizations. But I'm sure your S3 outdoes or matches my Nexus 7 though.

Great game so far, much better than the first. Can't see any graphical differences between a Note 2 and Nexus 7. Plays great on both.

It runs nicely on the Nexus 7. I've not touched the multiplayer yet but the career stuff alone feels like it's worth £2.

any idea if this runs well on a galaxy s3? the first game runs pretty well on my g3.

I'm running it on the US Galaxy S III. on highest allowed settings. The first screen in the OP are the recommended settings for it. Can't say how it'll do on an International one, but it'll probably run better.

Game runs great on my low-end MTK6577 phone (SGX 531 graphics and dual-core Cortex A9 1GHz). I had to put everything on low (except resolution which is still at native 960x540) but it hovers around 30FPS.

Looks great and runs smooth on iPhone 5. I want to see what it looks like on my 2013 Nexus 7, but I'm too cheap to buy it again. Maybe if it goes on sale.

I found the first one super bland, and it weirded me out because it looked right. It has the looks, but it lacks something, really. I may buy the sequel because, why not? :/

Just bought the original to see how it runs on my Kindle Fire 8.9. The new one isn't available yet.

update: Works perfectly.

But the first one can't compare to WaveRace64.

This is actually quite fun and polished, really great value for its price. And it runs perfectly on my Xperia P :P I love how this game looks great on high end devices but still is perfectly optimized for less beefy gadgets. And it's not even 50MB. You could learn a thing or two from these guys, Ubisoft.

I need to try this on my nvidia Shield.

Who own Splashdown IP (better games than the overrated Wave Race) and why they don't re-release them on console/android/iOS/handhelds?
