Tried out Oculus Rift HD for the first time last week, here is my video reaction. :O

................................ WOW JUST WOW .......................

You can watch the video here

There are no words for this and I can never go back :(

Super Mario < Super Mario world < FF VII < Mario 64 < Half-Life 2 < COD 4 < Bioshock < Oculus Rift

Seriously folks this is the next step, if you EVER had any doubt about the potential of this thing.
STOP just stop believe the hype its true its all true! Its simply put the best thing I have ever experienced in gaming.

You are inside the game, you are the character/pilot/anything.
This is as close as we are going to get to holodecks in our lifetime

It will be hard to answer any questions about it because you really had to experience it to feel how amazing it really is, but I'll try.

I love my devkit but I reeeaaally wish it had a better screen. The consumer version is going to be amazing. Anybody who has doubts about this thing clearly haven't tried it.

The resolution needs to be much higher. The prototype at gamescom was still plagued with a blurry image. Shit needs to be sharper.

Experience is awesome though. I was loosing my shit.

I haven't tooled with mine too much as I don't have the knowhow to make games, but I can say that I've never played Tetris like that before.

Even with the low resolution it can't be stated enough times:

IT JUST WORKS.

No tweaking, no calibration, pop it on your head and go.

I noticed you were wearing glasses. Was there any discomfort as a result of the rift hugging your head while wearing your glasses?

This. The screen door effect on the base kit is really bad. I imagine if that was not an issue it would blow my mind.
Just the demo they had at last years gamescom.

The kit I tried was a tied fit and I really had to settle in for just a minute but in the end I did not even notice it anymore.

Granted I played a 5 min game not a 3 hour gaming session.

I'm getting closer and closer to splurging on the devkit. I have to see it for myself while I have the time and energy to be this excited about games.

Yeah, after having had my 800p devkit for a while now I truly believe that we're now actually about to enter the true next generation of gaming with a proper consumer device (at least 1440p IMO).

DO. WANT.

And of course, Sony and MS are not ignoring this - they are just silent about what they are working on...

"I feel dizzy" lol

Yeah, I can see this being a problem for some people (me). I already feel sick if some game has fast motion and a wierd FoV, I can only imagine what this would do to my brain.

Can't believe MS and Sony are just ignoring it :(

This is what baffles me.

I'm quite excited to pick up my PS4 but if I heard this was coming at at the same time, fuck my PS4 pre-order.

Sony, MS even Nintendo need to jump on this. Its a winner

that silence is due to the feeling of the bottom of their stomachs dropping out when they realised they're launching right on the cusp of a potential revolution.

they've been designed to just about push 1080p TV gaming and they are already making compromises on that. they are woefully underpowered when it comes to VR and all its demands on locked 60fps/wide FoV/minimal input lag/stereo 3D.

Tie = in collar. Or, was it a dirty hands-on and you had to prepare yourself for the asphyxiation to be performed by someone in the booth?

Can't freakin' wait for the consumer version, and yes, I will continue to post my excitement in every Rift thread.

This is the next-gen, folks. This is where gaming was always meant to head.

my friend, at first i was thinking you not being able to keep your jaw in its place was over-reacting for your camera and all. and then that lady came and to sit next to you. :D

I was a believer before, next big thing is coming 8)

A slightly better overpriced proprietary version with their brand on it launched years later?

Boring.

True, but if they are in any way serious about the gamers (in the way Sony are pushing Indie Devs, for example) they could simply be fair and license the tech from Oculus, build and sell their own version (slap their brand on it) and since it uses the same API/software stuff from Oculus, a console version of the respective game could be easily enabled for the console platform Oculus.

It is a win-win situation: Oculus profits from the license share, Consolemaker profits from selling great hardware, developers profit from easy platform portability...

The only doubt I have is that it will disorientate me. I've no doubt it's amazing and I would love to try it.

My only other worry is that, if the press thinks MMORPGs addict people, this thing is going to take escaping the real world to a whole new level.

Halo 5 to offer Rift support?

But in seriousness, the Rift is fantastic. An HD version cannot get here soon enough.

And yet, no retail release in sight.

Sure. The roadmap on GDC showed the consumer-version should come out at the end of 2014, if everything works out as planned.

I'm really worried about getting motion sickness.

You can train it. One part of getting motion sickness is the wrong calibration. Another one is gamesupport and "believable" realism. I mean I played HL2 for a bit and while I was in a 30m long warehouse, Gordon ran from one corner of the warehouse to the other corner in just 2 seconds.
Games need to be a bit more "relaxed" when it comes to VR.

Btw. the thing I am most hyped is still the virtual cinema. It looked fantastic in the devkit, but the screen-door effect killed the usefullness of the app.

I can, dinosaurs ran by suits and stock holders.
They won't notice till it gets popular and highly profitable and then they'll go ME TOO, ME TOO and give it some half hearted soulless walled garden attempt.

stereo 720p, 30fps and only 200ms of input lag.

Hasn't yosp already mentioned that he's very interested in the technology and that they're looking into it? Sounds like they've noticed it, at least.

My guess is this won't be feasible for retail until gen 9, and if any of the first parties snatch these guys up, it'll be a new Wii-like craze.

I really hope the PS4 supports Oculus Rift.

I gather PC support is a given though. What kind of GPU is required to take advantage of this thing?

If you want to see it down the line, some years after OR releases, all press people will be forced by their employers to work in an distraction-free, more productive OR-enabled virtual office, so there wont be much for them to bitch about :D

cant wait to get the consumer version and play games like Among the sleep, DayZ, Dream, Ether One, EVE Valkyre, Everquest Next, Minecraft, Project Cars, Routine, Star Citizen, The Forest, The Gallery Six Elements, TUG etc. with Oculus Rift :P

Nice edit there. I think the jury is still out on this one. We have no idea what the actual hardware can really push, especially since the APUs are in the details heavily customized. PS3 was already able to pull off 3D, input lag shouldn't be a huge issue (don't hit me) and the rest ... no idea. Does OR require 60 fps? There were other VR systems with way lower framerate, so...
