Nothing! I said nothing!
Reveal coming at TGS according to CVG

Sony is preparing to reveal the final piece of its PS4 hardware strategy at TGS by showcasing a PlayStation-branded virtual reality head-mounted display, CVG has learned.

It originally intended to reveal the Sony device at Gamescom but plans fell through at the eleventh hour.

Sony plans to enter the virtual reality gaming space in a big way with PlayStation 4, Eurogamer can reveal.

Multiple sources have indicated to Eurogamer that Sony's VR headset will work similarly to Oculus'. Internally, the device has been demonstrated with Evolution Studios' PS4 racer DriveClub, with players able to look around the cockpit of a car.

Sony also has form with headmounted displays. The £1000 HMZ-T2 is a personal 3D viewer that can be used with 3D games and HD movies. It includes an OLED 720p panel for each eye that renders 3D pictures in high-contrast detail.

There also remains the possibility that both Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony may facilitate Oculus Rift compatibility with their consoles, and Oculus is often asked about potential deals with first parties.

"They're a little busy," Malamed told Eurogamer. "We've chatted, but they're trying to bring their new consoles out. It's a possibility - it would work. It's the same thing as iOS - it could technically work, but the business side isn't there."

Would bring a whole new realism to driving games. I like it.

Megaton.

Still inclined to believe they make a push for Oculus first. Yoshida has been quoted as really liking the tech.

Good on them - if they really are going there. Having experienced Oculus Rift, I see the future of gaming there. It would be wise by Sony to jump on that train.

Eurogamer understands Sony's VR headset was set to appear in some form at German show Gamescom last week, but was pulled. We now expect it to be unveiled next year.

Hmmm. Didn't someone here - famousmortimer perhaps? - hint at VR for gamescom? My recollection is kind of poor, but I remember rumours floating around.

Anyway: it begins, etc. etc.

If it is plug and play on the pc as well, and 300 bucks like the occulus, that will be legit megaton.

That is actually a megaton if true, but I wouldn't expect an official announcement for atleast 6 months, then probably another year until it actually comes out.

Should have launched with the system in my opinion, hopefully it doesn't end up like the PS Move.

Good news though is I expect Sony to mandate it for first party games as a optional feature like 3D and PS Move controls, so it will probably be amazing if true.

EDIT: Hmm... I think I see why they didn't launch it day 1. If a headset is in the works I'm guessing ti will range between $100-$300. Releasing at a much higher pricepoint than the One. That and the fact that its probably not ready. Getting PS4 basics ready set go for launch day and coming out with a lower price point was more strategic, then coming out with the optional hardware is a wise decision, especially if it doesn't work out like the Move.

I hope so. VR needs to get big.

I don't know how it would work on consoles however. Doesn't Oculus require 60fps?

VR headset linked with Move as virtual "hand controllers" is essentially my dream realisation of the Oculus concept, and I feel its gonna take one of the big three to push it cohesively.

Surely it would have been better just licencing oculus rather than creating their own expensive, proprietary version?

At this point in the game, everything is proprietary. There's no standard.

If these two 'operate similarly', I think there's hope that at some point there might be a compatible standard software layer for them. But it's probably too much to hope for that from the outset.

Hopefully Sony will use it's development muscle to make some great software for this and not just do what they did with the Move.

I thought all vr games had to be 60fps or higher, or else it makes you ill? How are they gonna get round that?

Same way games made 3D work on PS3 or the like.

If a game is 1080p/60, and CPU frame time is <=16ms, doing 2x720p/60 would work pretty simply.

Even half-720p frames could be acceptable. The current Oculus Rift kits use that, and the experience seems to be compelling enough.

Its never going work until it hits mass market prices. People complain about spending $100 more on a X1 for a kinect sensor. How is Sony going to sell a £1000 headset to more than a small niche?

VR's problem has always been its an expensive tech. Want anything decent? you need to pay through the nose. Untill that changes (no, the rift isnt changing shit) its a pipedream filled with token support and tech demos.

Very cool, i hope for a start that it works both with games and movies, be it Blu Ray or Netflix streaming stuff. GT6 PS4 + VR headset, id say goodbye to the real world.

I also hope MS does something similar, i want them both and Occulus Rift to go after VR and really try to make it happen.

It would be good for the idea if everyone in the industry gets in on it and pushes it heavily

That's precisely what famousmortimer hinted at some time ago.

I love the sound of it, do it ASAP Sony. Hope we don't have to wait till 2016 to enter the VR world on PS4.

Hope Sony sticks with this unlike their 3D and Move pushes in recent years. Looks cool, though I don't know how OK my wife will be with me when I completely ignore her with VR headsets like this.

I thought the HMZ-T3 didn't have any VR abilities at all, unless they're being kept secret for some completely inexplicable reason.

And it sounds like the Rift people need vastly better connected people in the business side of things.

Or the next 3D.

I don't mean as a fad, I mean as something Sony is going to be pushing hard.

Yep, and it's actually real 3D this time! I wish these companies would have waited for this tech to mature instead of pushing the crappy 3D garbage they've been shoveling on us for the past few years. I blame James Cameron.

It shouldn't be too different as i've heard somewhere in distant places that people can eventually make oculus demo to prepare for the thing.

Now the technical question is totally at stake here.. They talk about a Drive Club demo ? The game is 30 fps right now. Explain me how you multiply the geometry by 2, to achieve a needed 60 fps for the VR lol.. Explain me that..

Surely it would have been better just licencing oculus rather than creating their own expensive, proprietary version?

Sony has the hardware muscle to get their version done faster I assume. And so having a version they're developing gives them greater freedom in how quickly it gets released and how well it plays with PS4 and other devices.

Resolution is key for oculus rift / vr . Anything below 1080p will be unacceptable in consumer hand 1080p/60fps is minimum. Ask anyone with oculus devkit, which includes me ;p
