More info available at the link, but basically 0 A.D. has been in development for FREE without compensation for nearly a decade now. You can actually download what they have right now, and the work they've put in is high-quality studio-worthy stuff. With this fund raising campaign, they might finally be able to put a solid deadline on it. I would love to see this game get the attention it deserves.
What is 0 A.D.?

In short, 0 A.D. is a free, open-source, cross-platform, real-time strategy game of ancient warfare.
To break it down (and get rid of a lot of hyphens!), the game is similar to the classic games in the Age of Empires series and is completely free to download and play.
0 A.D. is not only completely gratis, but its codebase is freely available under the GPL and its art and music are licensed under CC BY-SA. It's free to distribute and mod. This means there is no DRM. And, above all, 0 A.D. sets an important precedent for software freedom in computer games. More on that later.
0 A.D. is a tribute to the ancient world. By playing it, you connect with our common human heritage.
The game is set in the ancient world, from 500 B.C. to 1 B.C. You build a town from scratch by gathering resources and constructing buildings and training citizens. Your goal is to conquer your enemies, or to convert them to your side.

Our factions include:
The Athenians, Britons, Carthaginians, Gallic Celts, Iberians, Macedonians, Mauryan Indians, Achaemenid Persians, Republican Romans, and Spartans.
Two more planned factions are the Ptolemaic Egyptians and Seleucids.
Each of these factions has unique art, unique unit rosters, historical heroes, and technology trees customized for historical authenticity and fun gameplay.
This isnt your daddys Age of Empires.
