LTTP: Splinter Cell Series / Chaos Theory shakes my world

tom-clancys-splinter-cell-chaos-theory-20050124033701509.jpg

Had the weekend off and managed to finish the first three Splinter Cell games. I have to say: Even though they came out long, long, long time ago, they aged pretty well. Especially Chaos Theory which is one hell of a game. Those graphics, that awesome gameplay. What ELSE do you want? Of course I'm not done with the series yet. Can't wait to play the other games. Even though I heard they are not too good. Or at least not as good as the "First Generation" games. Anyway, I think CT is without a doubt one of the best Stealth Games ever made.

Yours,

Franck

play the original xbox version of double cell if you have the opportunity. i feel it's nearly as good as chaos theory (it's made by the same development team). skip the 360/ps3 version.

Amazing series. Such a shame it peeked at CT but that game's phenomenal. I just love the previous gen games. Had a blast replaying them and finishing them without killing/knocking people out.

I'm constantly eyeing the PC collection on Steam. Ports are good, or should I just get the HD remasters on PSN?

Don't get the HD remasters! Horrible framerate dips. Pretty much unplayable in my opinion. :(

Chaos Theory was such a great game... nothing came close until Blacklist.

i dont even remember the games in between... and i know i've played them :|

ohhhhh

Double Agent

and

Conviction

I own the first SC and Chaos Theory for the OGXB. I'd like to pick up Pandora Tomorrow and Double Agent (XB) soon.

I'm several missions into SC and I'm liking it. Looking forward to the rest of the series, particularly CT and DA.

To those looking to play these games, the XB versions are cheap as dirt and reputedly fairly consistent, when compared against current-gen entries.

Chaos Theory co-op on the hardest difficulty over LAN in separate rooms with the lights off and using headsets (So the guards can hear you communicate) was one of the best, most immersive experiences of my gaming life.

How's the HD pack?

Wait, Blacklist is supposed to be actually good? I love Chaos Theory and have ignored this franchise for a while because it got too far away from what made SC great.
Best SC yet imho

it has some problems but overall it's pretty good, definitely way better than Conviction/DoubleAgent and the game is packed, lots of content. Level design is mostly good. It's a quite fast paced game unlike Chaos Theory but it is quite satisfying and you have lots of options at your disposal at any moment, controls are quite good which let you execute what you have in mind quickly. It's different but still good. The campaign and the locations they picked are quite exciting. Definitely worth playing imo unlike Conviction.

Blacklist is hella awesome. The level design is very good with multiple paths that you can take to avoid / flank enemies and even the sections that are clearly meant to be action setpieces can be stealthed through. The downside is that Sam Fisher has been replaced with Commander Fisher of the SSV Paladin. Most of the witty dialog has been relegated to 4E side missions whereas the main campaign is full on hurr durr serious business. Additionally, all the side missions can be played in co-op which is also nice.

The original three were god like. Double Agent put me off the series completely. I did buy Conviction to give the series another shot. Haven't played it yet though.

You can ignore Derrick, as always he's trying to pretend that Blacklist is shit even if he hasn't touched it.

I've seen no reason to even play it yet. I've just seen a bunch of people saying it's a really good stealth game but I saw the same thing with Dishonored and Deus Ex HR after they came out so forgive me if I put no weight into what people are saying right after the next one came out. They seem to be going for the same hybrid stealth-action route those were and you can't do that and come away with a good stealth game.

I'm curious which iteration of DA you played. I've heard the XB/PS2/GC version was developed by the same team that worked on the original trilogy, while the current-gen version was made by a different dev team or even a different studio.

Honestly, the whole series is great.

Chaos Theory is the peak thus far however, with Conviction being the weak link (although I still enjoyed it).

I finished up Blacklist a few weeks ago and I loved it. I'd put it right under Chaos Theory.

Fun fact: Blacklist is actually GOOD!

And that's coming from someone who freaking loves the first three, and hated Double Agent, and thought Conviction was just alright.

I can't believe it - and wouldn't have believed it prior to release - but BL goes back to what made the series extremely enjoyable. Different ways to attack, lots of gadgets, a fun, globe-trotting story, some funny dialogue, and great controls. Really worth a playthrough, especially if you find it on sale.

Chaos Theory is one of the best-aged games ever I think. Despite in-game facial models... it looks extremely modern with everything cranked up. Blacklist is the best SC game since CT easy. It's more linear like SAR and PT than CT, but still pretty damn good.

So from what I understand Blacklist is the best SC game since CT?
Without a shadow of a doubt.

Yo Derrick, I've been meaning to ask this, if you don't like Deus Ex HR, why do you have that avatar of it? Always confused me.

I'm not sure if some of the Blacklist praise here is genuine in saying its as good as CT or just because its better than Conviction...

The AI looks dumb as rocks in videos. Can they investigate turned off light sources and open doors like in Chaos Theory? Decent walk patterns where you have to time your movements? Only thing I've seen was enabling a non-lethal option, but can you completely avoid enemies (ghosting) and complete whole levels (Mark of the Ninja, Gunpoint)?

Yes that's correct although the original trilogy was a mix as well. Pandora Tomorrow was made by Ubisoft Shanghai (who ported the first SC to PS2 and GC) and they made the next gen version of Double Agent, while Ubisoft Montreal made SC1, Chaos Theory and a separate version of Double Agent for the last gen consoles while Ubisoft Annecy is responsible for the multiplayer in each game.
Both Double Agent versions share the general story but are basically different games.

Splinter Cell was my favorite series last gen, and I haven't even touched Conviction beyond the demo because of how disheartened the series' new direction made me. However, I'm happy to say Blacklist is a legitimate stealth game, and a pretty good one at that.

? yeah
you turn a light off or leave a door open & they investigate, if they are aware of an intruder they ask for back up & even enter doorways looking for you instead of blindly, the AI has improved over previous SC games (thou I am playing on realistic)
and it my be me but I get a MGS guard like vibe from them too, they have more character to them & aren't robotic like previous games, I've never played Conviction btw

1. They invesigate turned off light sources.
2. They can open doors as far as I remember.
3. There are different AI walking patterns where timing is key.
4. You can completely avoid enemies for nearly the entire game. There are a few set points where you will have to take them down, but you can remain hidden for these. You can always be non-lethal.

I wonder which version of Double Agent the PC version is based on.
