Welcome to the OT for Disney Channel's Gravity Falls Shorts!

"What exactly is Gravity Falls and why should I give a f**k?"

Gravity Falls, which premiered on Disney Channel on June 15, 2012, is the brainchild of creator Alex Hirsch (known for his work on The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and Fish Hooks).

Based loosely upon Hirsch's own childhood experiences/fantasies and family life, the series tells the story of twins Dipper and Mabel, whom are whisked away from their comfy home in Piedmont, California to spend their summer vacation with their great-uncle out in the wilderness of Gravity Falls, Oregon.

Forced to work at their "Grunkle" Stan's tourist trap, the Mystery Shack, things appear to be rather dull and ho-hum until Dipper discovers a worn-out journal in the woods. As he deciphers the strange tome, the twins begin to see that the quiet town is not quite what it appears to be on the surface. Countless wonders and terrifying secrets lie in wait for those daring enough to seek them out. As the days pass, Dipper and Mabel realize that as the journal warns...

"Remember - in Gravity Falls, there is no one you can trust..."

So, why should I watch this again?

Gravity Falls is probably one of Disney's most unique and refreshing shows in years. Think of a mix between the mystery and sci-fi themes of the X-Files, the hidden innuendo and adult humor of '90s Nickelodeon, the warming heart of early Simpsons, with an overall Pixar-like quality to it. Most people don't even realize it's a Disney-related show upon initial viewing!

Despite being on the air for only a year, GF is already one of the highest-rated and well-reviewed animated series on cable. It also was recently added to several "Greatest Animated Shows of All Time" lists including IGN.com and TV Guide.

And now...

What's the deal?

So, good news/bad news scenario...

Gravity Falls finally finished its first season in August (after a full year filled with delays...) While it has been confirmed for a second season, (Hirsch is still debating rather to have only 2 seasons in lieu of three (each representing a different month of summer)...) the bad news is that production has just begun! This means that we'll be lucky if Season Two airs in 2014.

The good news? To make up for the delay, the GF team is presenting a series of five minute shorts (similar to the new Mickey Mouse cartoons) in which focuses on Dipper exploring a new mystery of Gravity Falls in a faux documentary format. Starting the week of October 14th, Disney Channel will be running various episodes of Season 1 to act as a companion of sorts to...

interesting. given how episodic season one was, i thought this was gonna stretch on for 4+ seasons like adventure time and regular show.

Trying to find the source, but a staff member once was quoted on saying that they didn't want the endless summer thing like Phineas and Ferb,,,

Yup. There may or may not be three seasons exactly, we don't know that far in advance, but we know the big overarching story and how it ends and stuff.

nice OT. i haven't had the time to watch these shorts. as the airing conflicts with my schedule but i will watch them as they are online.

Thanks for the shout out, boss on both threads!

2nd one is up

Thanks for the heads up but this is actually part 4...

So, my thoughts

1. If anyone remembers, this is the thing from the first gravity falls teaser commercial...
2. I believe in you, GOOBER!
3. Why didn't Dipper ask about
Wendy
? Fucking
Mabel
has to ruin everything as always...
4. Didn't see that coming...
5. HOLY FUCK was that creepy! Reddit captioned the dialogue as
"You've disturbed my slumber. Enter my mouth, children! Enter your destiny!"
. And Dipper's reaction to
Bear-O
must have been what Hirsch was talking about on panel saying he had a fear of puppets...
6. Nice amount of cameos here (so
Wendy's brothers
are lumberjacks too?
Where is she
btw?). Also, guess this confirms that these take place throughout Season 1 because Dipper still has
Journal #3
at the beginning of this...Ending was surprisingly more funny than creepy.

Good for you, man...when I talk to parents/customers at work about the series, they scoff and reply, "I'd never let my kids watch that; it's too graphic/mature, etc."

Then, I think to myself, isn't that what people said 20 years ago about the Simpsons; of how Bart Simpson was going to corrupt America's youth?

So, now that the first (and only?) set of shorts are finished, the closing scenes put together reveals a picture of Bill Cipher with many new coded messages...

At the end of each short from Dipper’s Guide to the Unexplained, a cryptic image flashes for mere fractions of a second. Every episode had a different image after it that seems to form an overall image. The complete image appears to be a singular eye with a red x through it. This points to a particularly sinister and mysterious order according to the local Gravity Falls library. Once aligned, the images also reveal a cryptic message and a strange numerical code appears in each shot. Thanks to the minds of the community, we know how to decode the numbers and are working towards their true meaning.

Along the bottom of the image in the original Caesar Cipher. Using the method of three letters back, it says

FROM THE FIRST UNTIL THE LAST SEARCH THE CODES OF CREDITS PAST. ONE MEANS ONE SO SEARCH THEM ALL. WELCOME TO GRAVITY FALLS.

This message refers to the way to decode the numbers placed around each image. Much the the dismay of Alex Hirsch, we already knew how to decode these thanks to the method originally found by menkomaster shortly after the first shorts aired. Using the method discovered, each number with a parenthesis “)” after it denotes which episode’s ending credits to use while the numbers after in the same bracket refer to which letter of the decoded message to use. Once decoded, we are given the following message.

I WAS SO BLIND. HE LIED TO ME. THE DARKNESS IS NEAR.

So what does it all mean and what’s it’s true purpose? We do not know at this time. Perhaps once the image and it’s messages are complete, we can surmise something of importance. Stay tuned as the shorts continue to air and check back for updated messages and information as it’s discovered.

Fun Facts
-The second short to air, Stan’s Tattoo, mentioned the mysterious order whose symbol is “a eye with a red X through it.” The completed image from the end of each of the shorts form this order’s symbol.
-The method used to decode the numbers in each image is similar to modified Beale Cipher we previously saw used in the SearchForTheBlindeye.com website used from Sept 5 until Sept 13.
-According to Disney, the order of the shorts is determined by the image flashed at the end. This make’s Stan’s Tattoo short number 4 and Lefty would be short number 6. The last short to air, The Hide Behind would be short number 3 as it contains the top-right image.

Omg. I've known about GF for a while but I never actually sat down and watched until last week. I watched one episode and fell in love with the show. Is there any word on a season 1 bluray set?

No, but the first DVD stand alone came out on Tuesday....the bad news is that it's only 6 episodes but the good news is that it comes with a prop Journal #3...

Amazon is price matching best buy's sale for 12.99. Not too shabby...everyone else has it at 15-20 bucks...

Damn :/ I'll probably buy the set as I've not seen any reruns on Disney and the DVR hasn't recorded any episodes.

Just caught up on these. 'Lefty' is amazing, the ending especially, so dark. Guessing they had a bit more leeway as far as content goes with the webisodes then with the TV episodes.

Hey guys and gals!

A new string of GF shorts have started to air...in Russia.

The first, listed below, is a commercial for the Mystery Shack, with a forewarning to what happened to Lil Gideon (Hirsch did make a comment towards this in his AMA)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9KIeQVGwpc

(Use YouTube's CC option for English subtitles)

Rumor has it that a second one (focusing on Mabel's scrapbook) is floating about the net. I will post here when it is found...

The first six were amazing, all of them. Especially the one about the guy who is always facing left.

Can't wait for more.

A new batch of shorts will be airing starting February 3rd! Source

Can't wait for these, and they are seemingly unrelated to the Russian one that leaked a while back. Perhaps there is a third set of shorts that will be announced at a later date? Now if only we could get a release date for Season 2...

Another Russian short found!

Wendy's guy friends work at the theater? And they're kinda dicks, huh?

Be sure to turn on CC for English subs!

That was really awesome, Loved the
MLP reference
. It will be interesting to find out where
Wendy is at this point - from what I remember, she hasn't been in any of the shorts so far, and the last time we saw her was a brief appearance during the season finale.

Also, the Russian VA isn't really all that great, it's pretty generic, although that could partially be to me being spoiled by the spectacular English VA. I'll definitely rewatch it in English when it comes out.

I actually had a theory about our favorite ginger's disappearance as of late. Besides GF, I'm a huge Regular Show fan, and lately, the big deal is the return of Cloudy J, a female character also voiced by Linda Cardellini that shares more than a few parallels with Wendy. Maybe this may be a factor? Besides, a lot of the fan base actually despises her (see DMPrince's main GF thread for details) so much that Hirsch himself has said to made changes to his original idea in regards to story.

Hopefully, I'm dead wrong...

The first Mabel short is said to do with "love," and Dipper is mentioned as a "eligible bachelor," so Wendy just might get a mention just yet...

Wait what? People dislike Wendy so Hirsch is rewriting stuff?

Wait what did I miss here? Didn't see the most recent episodes yet though.

In one of the recent leaked shorts that aired in Russia,
the characters go to a cinema to watch a film about ponies.

Also, loved the new Soos short, that was great. Seems like there will be another series of shorts based on
Gravity Falls Public Access Television.

kinda.

this was a deleted quote from Hirsch's twitter about late 2012. (sorry for the blurness; only found it on google cache)

#1. The other day @pizzieloo told me to shut up when I was heavily critiquing the newer Gravity Falls episodes following the same plot :(

#2. The plot being Dipper fucking something up trying to impress Wendy and starting a - SPOOKY ADVENTURE - it happens EVERY SINGLE EPISODE NOW!

#3. You are right! There were def. story problems this season. Hoping to kick way more ass in season 2.

Plus, on the AMA last summer:

iiVTPLBcaD2dy.png

so, if Wendy's reduction in the latter half of the season is any indications of these "changes," the future's probably not so bright for our favorite ginger. Then again, there was that new short, so it can go either way...

Always the tag bridesmaid, never the tag bride.
Thanks for posting all that. I was reading through the AMA, he's surprisingly candid about some stuff. Welp, curious to see where they take things in Season 2.

They don't need to cut back on Wendy, they just need to use her in more and better ways. She was kind of a one-note character in the first season.

And now, in case anyone's missed them, the entire Mabel series!

My thoughts:

1. Cute episode but to be nerdish, they fucked up the canon here. This is supposed to take place right after the first Gideon episode, and yet
Waddles is there and Dipper is quoting the "Wendy list" from the clone episode without even realizing his crush yet..
.
2. Check out the Aztec pages. It tells the story of the
Air Bud
series...
3. (points at the sunglasses scene) You see, GF team! It's shit like this that makes the interwebs think it'd be "cute" if the twins themselves got together! Also, Sovereign!
4. That opening scene might be the creepiest thing GF has done just yet. Also, thanks GF team for remembering that
Wendy
exists, even for a split second.
5. (looks at the theme song images) Can we get this kid some Ritalin, please? You shouldn't be able to do those things to a
dog
...Also, the webs are saying that the caricatures of
Dipper is modeled to be more like his voice actor, Jason Ritter.

Thanks for posting all that. I was reading through the AMA, he's surprisingly candid about some stuff. Welp, curious to see where they take things in Season 2.

They don't need to cut back on Wendy, they just need to use her in more and better ways. She was kind of a one-note character in the first season.

Agreed on both points. As said before, I think it can go either way. IMHO, they had a few chances to expand upon Wendy's character, and they blew it. (the closest with a non-Dipper experience was Boss Mabel, and instead, she looked/sounded like an asshole)

Perfect example was the season finale: she rolls up on Dipper, says
"Well, my life is ruined unless you guys fix this," and then leaves without contributing anything despite her ass being on the line as well.
WTF?! Hell, we didn't even get an explanation of how she and Dipper
got back on speaking terms after the breakup episode...
Maybe there's a reason the GF team leaves certain things purposely vague?

The thing that worries me is that Hirsch's original role for Wendy in the story is to be Dipper's crush. (sorry if I sound like an sexist jag, but even on the show's website, that is her classification) If people bitch and moan, saying they don't like that angle, it's either she becomes more independent (like how Soos or Stan are with the kids) or gets written out of the show (where we have a cameo here or there).

But then again, the GF team has surprised us before....
