You Are Not The Hero is a 2D Action Platform RPG that ditches the battle system to focus on richer RPG gameplay elements. Instead of playing a traditional hero that saves the world, you're instead playing a bystander swept into the affairs of the heroes and villains alike.

You play as Petula, an unemployed, emotionally charged, ill-tempered, otherwise average young woman. With the royal army hot on their heels, the heroes have made their way to your village where they resume scavenging for supplies in everyone's homes. After confronting them for stealing your pendant, they rush off to continue their quest, giving you a quest of your own to retrieve it.

The Idea:
This game has been in the making years before development started. It began when I looted 10gil from a random house in Final Fantasy IX, playing as Vivi. I wanted to return it after finding out it was their grandmothers life savings, unfortunately, there was no way to do this, no 'come clean' mechanic in place. I imagined what life would have been like afterwards, how the grandmother could no longer pay her mortgage, how they were evicted, begging in the streets.

I wanted to explore the RPG world through the eyes of a bystander, a regular person in someone elses world. I also wanted to make sure it was fun to play, a truly memorable experience. I want to create world that looks and feels alive. Too many RPGs get caught up in size and scope that the tiny details that bring the game to life are forgotten, I want to avoid that.

The Details:
Traditional RPGs are usually well remembered for their unique battle systems, level grinding and vibrantly epic story. Naturally, being a bystander to said story doesn't lend itself to these conventions. On the other hand, freeing ourselves from these crutches allows us to focus on unique experiences that keep the gameplay fresh and fun.

- Pixel based movement, no more tile-restrictive movement!
- Deal with enemies using your brain; Distract them, run away, hide, render them unconscious or use your environment to your advantage. Sure, you can try fighting them with your trusty shovel. Good luck with that!
- Explore a beautifully crafted world full of hidden secrets and cynical people. Visit impoverished towns, deep caverns, lush forests and mysterious ruins. Jump, climb, platform your way through hazardous environments. Obligatory awesome train sequence included!
- Tackle unique, fast-paced gameplay that'll keep you on your toes! Save villagers from annihilation, evade a landslide, vanquish a giant freaking ghost (without 'fighting'!)
- Traverse intricate mazes while solving IQ-zapping puzzles. Form bridges to continue your journey or collapse them to save a village from a foreign army. Switches, Levers and Pulleys oh my! You like those, right?
- Change the outcome of the game with the decisions you make throughout your journey. You may not be the hero, but you can still make a big, big impact. What kind of impact is completely up to you.
- Experience the lives of other NPCs by getting part time jobs, or through a side story of their own! Find out how it's like to run an INN, sell items to heroes and raise cute chicken-ostriches!
- Enter "The Library" Where you can replay finished storyline chapters, review high scores, view unlocked hidden scenes and access more hidden content!

Backer Involvement:
Backers have a unique opportunity to heavily influence gameplay. Because of the nature of YANTH, I will be spending the majority of my time crafting unique quests, minigames and stories to provide an enjoyable experience to the player. As a backer, you'll be able to help me with the details of these unique events.

What kind of duties do you think running an INN would entail? Should the player be able to haggle prices with travelers? Would hiring janitors be fun? What if you hire the wrong kind of janitor and they end up missing a days of work due to their drinking problem? Should you have to clean up the rooms in their place? The possibilities are literally endless. The format for helping with the mechanics are like so:

Decide what type of minigames to work on.
Brainstorm duties that would be fun to simulate.
Vote on the best functions for the minigames to weed out unnecessary or un-fun mechanics.
??? Voodoo magic to make everything work.
Awesome minigame you could spend hours, days, weeks, months playing!]

interesting concept but

Woman?

That's woman? Need more breast.

Well, this seems neat. I don't have much money at the moment, but I'll keep an eye on it.

In my opinion, the battle system is only the best part of RPGs when they are focused on it and give you lots of options (Pokemon, SMT, dungeon crawlers with lots of party customization). A game with a different focus could be interesting in its own right.

Because the world needs more RPG Maker Kickstarters.
If enough people agree that there are too many RPGMaker games asking for money these days, it just won't get funded. That's the beauty of kickstarter. Greenlight also has its fair share of RPGMaker games and I don't see too many making the Top lists.

That said, the budget for this project seems very modest, so maybe they'll manage to scrape by anyway.

A self-professed "JRPG" project which looks like it's developed in RPG Maker, with wannabe Japanese art style and a pretentious Japanese subtitle, developed by Americans, trying to get funding through Kickstarter.

Can't get more weeaboo than that.

Well compared to the crap Japan's been churning out lately, maybe we need more of that.

At least the characters don't have Japanese (or "Japanese") names.

So, it's an RPG without the good part?

Well, it's probably made on RPG Maker so chances are the battle system won't be that great anyway. The spritework (excluding portraits) is nothing different either; plain old RPG Maker assets and derivatives.

The idea of JRPG without actual battles is kind of an interesting one, you have to admit. How the game kicks off is also hilarious.

But man, that's a really tricky idea for a game to pull off. And mini-games like running an Inn? So what, we can kind of make this like a recettear like game too with stuff like that, just with a focus on the story as well?

I don't understand why someone would want to get rid of the battle system for an JRPG when the battle system is the most important system in the game.

This looks like exactly what I wanted from an RPG

Just a 2D adventure/interactive story game. I have very little interest in RPG battle systems, but I love the medium for story/quests/scenarios.

Funny idea. Too bad I don't think I'd enjoy playing it. Someone tell them to make it into a comic so I can just read it instead. :)

Nevermind that JRPGs that focus on battle systems at the expense of all else tend to be some of the most derided anyway (just look at FFXIII, and even Grandia Xtreme's a divisive game despite combat being what people generally consider the strongest asset of the series.) I'd like to think they're a genre where the whole is greater than the sum of their parts.

Fund some guys dicking around with RPG Maker? Sure take all of my money yes..

There have been games made from RPG Maker that people enjoy on here (To The Moon and Cherry Tree High). I guess you just have to mess around with RPG Maker to make something good on it

Personally, my favorite part of RPGs is building a character, getting new items/abilities and exploring. The character building part is usually part of a battle system but often I find battling itself can become a drag.

Reading the description made me feel really intrigued, then I saw RPG maker.

Not only do I not like that aesthetic in the first place, I've grown really tired of from the numerous games that utilize it.

If people still use it in innovative ways, what's the problem?

At least the characters don't have Japanese (or "Japanese") names.
On the other hand, the Japanese title translation is pretty superfluous unless there are concrete plans to release the game in both languages.

...and if the "concrete plans" consist of the head of the group saying "We'd love to if Japanese people want! (*´▽`*)" with a wistful sigh, that doesn't count
