Dead Trigger 2 is a Free-2-Play First Person Shooter for multiple platforms. Basically there are two currencies, the standard "cash" and the premium "gold". The gold is used to hurry along various timers. This is perhaps my LEAST favorite type of Freemium model but there are many free ways to get a few gold here and there when you absolutely need them thanks to a Tapjoy option. Overall I don't think it hobbles the experience all that much and, quite frankly, I think the game is a real joy considering it's free and I have bought a bit of currency to support the developer, Madfinger.
Whereas Dead Trigger 1 was your basic dumb, fun arena shooter in the sequel we have a much more fleshed out story on our hands. So far I'm in the process of gathering survivors to build up my headquarters. As luck would have it, these survivors have so far all had some PRETTY handy skills to a fellow in my situation! The gameplay here is much more mission-based compared to the first. You may find yourself refueling a generator, or escorting a repairman, or defending your base with a sniper rifle. They've also added several "Special Infected" quite similarly to the Left 4 Dead series to spice things up a bit, my favorite of which is "The Scienfist". He was a scientist in the employ of a government agency trying to contain the initial outbreak. He wears a HAZMAT suit and is so radioactive that just being near him can kill you so you need to keep your distance!
Currently the game takes place in the American southeast. Each month, according to the developer, they will be bringing the story to another country. So far the only ones I've heard of are the US, Shanghai, London, and Africa but there may well be more.
The nice thing about the DT series is that, on Android at least, they really put the control in the player's hands so to speak. Pretty much any controller device works, right on down to a wired PS3 controller. Not only that, in part 2 they've introduced an "Auto-fire" option for folks who prefer to use the touch screen. Just point your reticule at a zombie and you automatically attack. It may seem ridiculous at first, but think for a moment how much some people have grown to love auto-accelerate in mobile racing games. In practice it's worked really well in the 5 hours or so I've put into the game and has really improved the player experience. Your experience is much more fluid and console-like now that you never have to lift your fingers to fire.
Another fine feature is that your account is cloud-based. What this means is that ANY platform you own that has DT2 on it you can load up your account and pick right up. I burned through the battery on my Nexus 4 this morning playing, and I moved straight on to my Nexus 7 where I picked up seamlessly. There were some technical glitches a bit earlier this morning but I think it's pretty understandable considering the scope of the game and how popular the series is, not to mention Madfinger being a tiny studio.
Overall the game is fun, very pretty, free, and definitely worth your time. I don't think you should necessarily cancel your PS4 and Xbone preorders, but if you are a primarily mobile games such as myself then this is a pretty damned major new release. As excited as I've been for Super Mario World 3d, I've been just as excited for DT2 and it has been well worth the wait.
Bullshots (Surprisingly painful to find in-game but after hours of gameplay these look pretty darned close to the actual game in action) -
