We live in a world of Hyperbole

Bane was better.
Everything has to be the Best. Thing. Ever. or it's not worth our attention.

You can say that you liked a movie, and someone will come in and say that some other marginally related movie is better.

You can say you enjoy a particular restaurant but since it doesn't hold up to one that serves a similar food on the other side of the country you just shouldn't even bother.

You can't find an actress attractive anymore without folks telling you there are prettier ladies.

Let's not even get started on how polarized politics have become, too.

Gradient. Context. Temperance. These are things we have lost thanks to the internet, click baiting, and 24 hour news.

Hold me, GAF.

Hyperbole is a really awful way that legitimate discourse can be sidetracked over outlandish claims. For some reason, maybe it's the anonymity of the internet, but it feels as if hyperbolic statements have become more pronounced and argumentative nuance is a lost art.

Also, while we're at it, I'd like to shoot down the hyperbole that Halo 4 was bad. It was a good take on one of the most legendary series of all time. They done good.

Something about the way conversations happen on the net, you can't convince someone to see your side a little bit unless you totally entrench yourself into your position.

You're on fucking crack, aren't you? Fucking Rob Ford, huh?!

Is that you!?

I never played Halo 4. I'm sure it was alright.

You know what?

DmC was a good game that paid homage to what came before and helped move the series into a new direction.

Son, you drunk? Game was shit. Not even the shit. It was so shitty that it doesn't even deserve a fucking 'the'.

The initial comments just caused everyone to turn on each other. Come now, people. Let's be civil he-*gets hit by spear.*

Op....i am that guy. Not sure when it started but i love blowing things out of proportion because i feel it adds life to something that is soulless. It is definitely something i have always had but the internet made a word that i was unfamiliar with "hyperbole"and now i am this. I guess i love loving things. When i ask my brother what he thinks of a movie he will say it was good that means to him it was fucking awesome but with no emotion...how come i dont feel like that when i like something ill say its great, amazing, phenomenal. I dont know im the guy that pumps people up without me lets face it.....you would be bored ;)

Nothing wrong with being positive and LOVING stuff. It's the whole "don't bother with #2" mentality.

Sometimes communicating online seems like acting through heavy prosthetics. Lack of nuance breeds a desire for exaggeration to convey the intended emotion. Calm and temperate responses can seem bland without traditional accompanying social cues like eye contact, facial expression, etc.

That's not intended as a statement in support of silly hyperbole, mind; more of an attempted explanation for its seeming ubiquity.

That's as good an explanation as any. Loudest voice gets heard. Although, it does happen in real life too though. I think we're all getting extremely polarized in all facets of life.

*cough*

That people use hyperbole to get noticed and boost their own signal seems reasonable.

Though for some people, hyperbole seems to result because they always want something to be right about. As a friend once called it, those who set themselves up as Judge of All The World, which is particularly common to see on the Internet. Where everyone can feel like a big man and a pundit on a soapbox behind the computer screen.

I have become much more aware about the language and phrases I use and have been earnestly trying to cut down on expensive words.

Lead by example and all that.

i blame the internet. normally we like to be loud through our clothes, our cars, our swag, our look, our style etc. but all we are in this world is our words, so our words have to be blatantly obnoxious.
