IGN uncut Xbox One Demo

It's a bit bonkers how crazy restricted voice commands are. You think with how much progress we've made with Siri and Google Voice that Microsoft could get the Kinect to not only accept commands more often, but to accept natural commands.

what's shocking about it? Voice commands never worked perfectly ever. Kinect doesn't use any future technologies out of nowhere.
Well to be honest, google now and siri have much better natural language processing. You don't need to be as specific with your commands.

Edit:
Rokker get out of my head!!!!!

What are you talking about, I say "Redbox Instant by Verizon" all the time.

Should I ask how often the PS4 voice commands work?

Honestly, I think it doesn't really matter as MS has been tooting the Kinect and voice command horn for years now and they feel it is a cornerstone to their whole strategy. If MS says that Kinect is this awesome thing that no one can touch as they spent X billion dollars on it and it still has issues, than frankly is a problem. Sony has made a big deal about sharing and put it on the controller itself so if that stuff doesn't pan out, that's a big problem too.

This isn't surprising.

This time the voice recognition software is by Microsoft. It's a shame that even with the superior technology Microsoft's software ruins it.

Why did they change?

Pretty much what I saw on the Gamespot livestream. Disappointing, but it will improve over time. Still wonder if putting all your marketing behind this in it's current state was/is a viable strategy.

The phone is also an inch from your face

My phone is never an inch from my face when I'm using siri. Also, the microphone array in the kinect is very advanced. It has little to do with the mic. They are getting great quality audio for the voice commands. It's backend processing that is the issue.

I think so. You got to differentiate yourself from the market somehow.

The comments keep mentioning that he needs to pause. Is that true? I never used Kinect 1 voice commands, so I don't know.

Also once again speaking to things sounds so unnatural.

That's cheap. We didn't even know the ps4 was really using them. They sure as he'll aren't as focused on it as Microsoft is. The only real use for kinect is voice commands and the kinect is forced on you

They need to be more lenient on the commands

"show" should be a decent replacement for snap when you don't have an app up.

I haven't watched it yet, but I was under the impression from those who have seen it, that the Gamespot crew were frequently using the wrong voice commands, hence the poor response?

Certainly, the voice recognition system has been receiving criticism across the board because of a level of unresponsiveness, but you never got the impression it was as bad as it was being demonstrated in this video?

Because it's a MASSIVE part of the Xbox One user interface! It's often touted as one of it's biggest features. And Kinect does have tech that few commercial devices use. It's a beast.

I hardly ever try them, but they've worked whenever I did. But that's not really the point. Sony doesn't tout voice commands as an integral, or even remotely big, feature of it's UI/OS. I expected this to work better.

I have to say, even tho i had no intentions to get an Xbone in the next year it's still really sad to see the core features perform so poorly. I mean what is the systems's strong point if most features don't work 100%?

I really cant understand the appeal of buying a system at launch that:

- Is less powerful than its competitor
- Locks Apps that you can use anywhere else for free behind a paywall
- Whose features that are supposed to be its staple are half baked
- And is 100$ more than that more powerful competitor

I know, games games games. But man the whole package youd be receiving is seriously lacking in value.

Oh well to each their own! I know what ill be getting.

What the heck? I can just say random shit to my phone and it comes up with goofy responses. The switching instantly back to the game was pretty cool, but the voice commands feel way behind what google and apple already have working. How many times did he have to repeat a command to get it to register? The voice commands just failing silently most of the time seems pretty rough.

I was shocked by how often the voice commands just did not work.

I noticed a trend in the commands that didn't register, they were usually said in the flow of its speech. When you watch the demos done by people from MS, they usually stop talking for one second before uttering a command. It's probably a filter to avoid launching a command from random speech. It could be why the console always picks it up on the second try.

A bit... unpolished. Interestingly enough, it seems to work on the second try like pretty consistantly. I wonder if you have to wait longer after saying "Xbox..." before adding your command "...play Dead Rising".

In my experience, a whole lot fucking more than half the time, which is what we see here, and it's a throwaway feature on that particular console.

I don't think bringing up the PS4 will do anyone favors in comparison to this shitty video.

Here's hoping that the IGN tester was in a non-ideal room, because if this is the experience after a full week of usage...

Ugh, this definitely isn't the most positive video you could hope for.

However, has anyone else done an uncut video showing off the UI and Kinect Voice capabilities? Especially from the sites saying Kinect works well?

Yeah, Siri, especially on an iPhone 5 or newer, makes this thing look like a bad toy.

Watching Gamespot's live stream right now and shit is kinda rough. They are going to play a game now though.
