Indie Dev Locked Out Of ID@Xbox For Opting Out Of Exclusivity

Okay, we know that Vlambeer exploited the exclusivity loophole. Witch Beam genuinely wanted to release on all platforms, opted out of exclusivity months before ID@Xbox to do so, and then became locked out of the program as a result.

We haven’t signed up to the ID@XBox program, unfortunately we started work on our PS4, Vita, and Wii U versions of Assault Android Cactus before the program was announced and have no intentions of delaying those versions to meet their launch parity clause. In a somewhat ironic twist it seems having a temporary exclusive agreement with another platform from before the ID announcement actually helps your chances of getting a waiver for the clause, but we opted out of exclusivity to keep our options open and are now locked out of the program.

Seems kinda shitty. Some may say it's their own fault, but Witch Beam was thinking of the future when they opted out of exclusivity. Maybe Charla would help out?

Their loss. Game is filling that twin stick shooter void nicely

So under this a indie which exclusively released on PSN (lets say Hotline Miami) will never be able to go on Xbox Live or am I reading into this wrong?

No, This is just for people that want to sign up for ID@Xbox. They get a couple of Xbox One dev kits and a Unity license to develop for Xbox One. There's a clause in the program that states games that release under ID@Xbox can't release elsewhere earlier than on Xbox unless they have an exclusivity deal.

If we make enough noise, they'll fix it. So let's make some noise. Who is in charge of indies at xbox so we can tweet them?

Microsoft just being Microsoft. With the state of gaming now no platform holder should be picky in when they get a game on their platform.

Indie games should be free of such ridiculous policies. This is the problem with the games industry being so centred around GIVING CONTROL to three companies interested entirely in their own profitability.

It's a hostile environment for video games.

Well Hotline Miami could because it was a previous deal.

Chris Charla (program director for ID@Xbox) has said they will work devs on a case by case basis in regards to situations like this. Still the launch day parity clause is fucking dumb.

"We like criticism. It never feels good to be criticized, but that's how you get better, right? I think we've come up with something that devs will be really happy with, and that's really just focused on getting the best possible original games onto Xbox One."

I would say this is an example of unintended consequences biting Microsoft in the ass, but this problem could have been easily foreseen if they actually would have talked to developers about this for 5 minutes.

Seriously, a day cannot pass without MS taking some more beating due to some new, stupid piece of Xbox One news.

:lol

I'm surprised any 3rd party dev is still working on WiiU games.

Game looks amazing, but why do so many games have that "gem collection" part where there's a million particles that you're supposed to suck up to improve your score? It just clutters the screen with unnecessary shit. I prefer Geometry Wars Evolved to Geometry Wars 2 for that reason.

This game yet again has all that shit you're sucking up and having to try to figure out what's happening on the screen with unnecessary shit thrown on there.

Game looks gorgeous but that "suck up all the gems from your kills" shit needs to DIAF.

I wonder what the core reason is at MS for the unwillingness to give indies all the freedom in the world to do whatever they want.

What happens when suits are in charge of the gaming division. Xbox used to have such promise until MS corporate took charge
