really surprised at GT5, guess they want to push everyone over to 6

I don't give two shits about any of those games, but Sony is better off avoiding the shitstorm and keeping the servers up. This seems pretty shady for those who like these.

This has been going on for years. Sony has shut down lots of servers. Companies like EA and 2K shut down all their servers for their yearly games right after the next one comes out every single year.

I'm not surprised they're pulling the plug on GT5. It certainly is an effective way to get people to buy the next one.

This is a bad PR move, too soon for GT5.

It's been over 3 years. That actually seems longer than your average online server lifespan.

The Resistance server takedown is pretty rough though.

DAMMIT! I've still yet to get that 10,000 kills trophy in R2.

Also, how long has it been since Resistance 3's release? Doesn't seem that long ago.

Oh, I never did pick up Resistance 3, did I? No point to anymore, I guess. Kind of makes me lose my confidence in services like PlayStation Plus helping keep servers up, too. Ever since MAG's servers were announced to kick the bucket, I've been pretty wary.

Guess I should throw my GT5 disc in the trash now.

To clarify, without seasons and login bonus GT5 is pretty broken game even in single player.

The Resistance games are fair enough, but it seems a bit dishonest to do this to GT5 already. The Academy Edition was only released as new at the end of 2012. If they want to push people over to GT6, this is not the way to go about it.

The best part of Resistance 3 is the SP easily, not the MP.

SP is good. MP is just COD rehash.

Why would you say that? PS+ is a multiplayer requirement on the PS4, while Resistance is a dead & buried IP from a publisher and developer point of view.

I'd understand Resistance but GT5?

really? Even if it's not as played as it used to, but it's like the number one series...

Why are they going the EA route of forcing people to move on?

For once, I'd take P2P over servers.

COD has no way of going down for as long as online services like PSN or Xbox Live exist.

Sarcasm? There's no way I'd award Sony more money if they closed down servers of a game I'm still playing in an attempt to strongarm me into buying the sequel.

Seems a bit soon for GT5 servers to be shut down. Also didn't even think the Resistance games still had a multiplayer base, was never a fan of 1 and 2s multiplayer, enjoyed 3s though.

killing gt5 so close to gt6 looks real unclassy and makes the franchise look cheap. when are you gonna kill the 60$ product you are trying to sell me today

resistance, who gives a shit. bury it

The Resistance server takedown is pretty rough though.

Every non-EA game on the 360 still works, even ones released at launch 8 years ago.

DS games can still be played online.. the console has come out almost a decade ago at this point.

Gran Turismo's shutdown seems entirely motivated by getting people to update to the latest version. This definitely turns me off from purchasing any future Gran Turismo.

No sarcasm.

Companies like EA and 2K do it with their sports games because it works.

2K in particular makes it -super clear- what you're signing up for. It says it right in the case that you're spending $60 for a game whos servers will shut down less than 12 months after its launch so you're forced to buy the next year's version to keep playing online.

I get that, but it just upsets me that server closures like this still happen with absolutely no chance for people to set up their own servers. I know we aren't talking PC, but with server closures for games like Metal Gear Online, MAG, and now Resistance, it makes me really sad that companies like Sony and Konami can't just do something like release server hosting tools, since it would definitely garner some enthusiast goodwill.

When did 3 years become a longer than average lifespan for a game's multiplayer component?

This completely stinks. Especially so when considering how many newer games are rushing to push most of their featureset online.

That is super shady with GT5. Interesting method to try and get more GT6 sales.

Also, now that I'm paying for online I don't expect to see servers getting shut down.

Aren't the lobbys in GT5 player hosted? Exactly what are they losing by keeping them up? Other than trying to force players to move to GT6 is there really much to gain?

youre not ready for next gen friend

Resistance series I guess is understandable but Gran Turismo 5? Gran Turismo 6 hasn't been out a full month yet and the series doesn't have yearly releases. That's worse than recent EA sports games.

I wish that before killing online communities for games, a company like Sony would instead put the onus on the gamers to run private servers to keep the game going, kind of how Shthack or whatever is keeping PSO alive to this day.

I understand why they shut them down -- they end up being too costly to justify, but that doesn't mean nobody should get to play them. Release the net code or whatever to the gaming community and let them run servers on their own.
