CUPHEAD: 1930s video game

This looks absolutely fantastic, the aesthetic is realized amazingly well and the animations/gameplay (what little is seen) looks to be super smooth/crisp. Can't wait to see more detailed gameplay!

Hope the gameplay works, and that is comes to other platforms - though this is not port begging, mind you.

This looks right up my alley.

Very interesting and beautiful. Though I wonder if the VHS / scanline effect was the right decision, instead of film grain and hairs.

Would love to see some more gameplay footage!

I love the concept, have to say though the music has left me unenthused. I completely get the angle as it is what I do for a living, but I just hope before release it has a little more focus but major props for going with that style.

Same thoughts. I wonder why they took that route. Also, I hope the gameplay is a little more complex than the first video lets on. Could get boring quickly. I wonder how many bosses they're shooting for, too. With animations like that, it makes me worry that they'll have to skimp a little on content, which might not be good for a boss rush game.

so the point is...

I will leave this is as an exercise for the reader.

It makes sense to me due to the fact that many of us were treated with these animations not through projectors but through VHS transfers of such content which exhibit both video and film artefacts.

I could be wrong, but I think this is made by a GAFfer from the indie thread

Maybe you are confussing it with our game, Fleish & Cherry in Crazy Hotel, that is similar thematically (1930's cartoons), although completly in black & white, and an adventure game instead of a brawler.

Although this last month I havent been in the making indie games thread, so maybe they appeared on there and they are also gaffers.

Their game looks awesome, hope to see more soon.

Nngh. This looks amazing.

Also, so does the game in the trailer. Now suddenly I want a genre of video games that look like various cartoon eras.

The backgrounds are absolutely pitch perfect, I'm really impressed how they've nailed such an idiosyncratic painting style. The characters are less convincing but have an awesome look all the same. I can sympathise with how hard it would be to have the characters look as traditional as the backgrounds. I'd imagine they'd probably have to paint the colours of each frame by hand to get rid of that flat colouring, and then add some filters to acheive the same look you'd get by photographing each frame with a camera from the 30's. The animation itself is just as convincing as the backgrounds though, especially that walk cycle.

Also, I love the main character's design.

It looks so nice! I'm interested. Though I also would like to see how it looks with an effect simulating visual artefacts in old movies instead of scanlines.

Perhaps the idea was to simulate the effect of looking at a CRT TV, like you might on a Saturday morning watching cartoons. Soo many good games to look forward to coming up!

Looks really great. Animation is the only other thing I seriously collect, so this is right up my alley. I do hope its coming to a console as I don't game on PC much but I'd buy it either way.

Title had me feeling like somehow the history of the world had been rewritten and there was now a videogame from the 1930s...better title would be "CUPHEAD: 1930s animation style videogame".

Anyways, looks pretty cool. Hopefully the gameplay turns out as well as the art style is looking.

Wow, that looked beautiful - fantastic animation and style.

As mentioned above, not quite sure what to think of the scan lines and chromatic aberration though.

Art style looks spot on, but as others have said, I'm not sold on the game play. Especially that it is boss battles only. This type of thing deserves to be fleshed out as a whole game with minor enemies and stuff. As it is, I'm not sure there's enough creativity in the actual game design, which would be a shame!

Those bastards! Stole my idea, they did! Well, my game is quite a bit different, but yeah. That art style. Dammit, I have to bump this up on my list of to-dos now.

The faux-jazz was wrong for a game with a 1930ies esthetics. The composer should watch a dozen or so Betty Boop cartoons from the early 1930ies and then try again.
