A friend of mine listens to something similar to this. All I remember is that it was called "Pop Goes Punk" and it sounded like a calamity.

Those are probably more "post hardcore"edit:/"metalcore" covers than "metal" covers that might sound like a calamity to people who aren't fans of that sound.

Here's an example off of "Pop Goes Punk" which I'm guessing is one of the better ones (haven't listened to the album);
August Burns Red - Baby One More Time (Britney Spears Cover)

I could find dozens if not hundreds of examples of "post hardcore" pop song covers, but they're generally pretty bad unless you're really into that specific style of music that usually resonates more with teenagers (note:I don't think "post hardcore" is bad, but the types of bands in this genre that cover pop songs usually are)

Edit: Whoa whoa whoa. Let's not mis-label bands. Post hardcore is hardly August Burns Red or most any band you'd find on a Pop Goes Punk CD. Post Hardcore is more of a Mewithoutyou, La Dispute, Funeral Diner, thing.

Sorry, I guess August Burns Red would rather be called "metalcore". Personally I think they ride the line a little close with their layered screams and only semi-technical instrumentation, but I don't listen to them so I didn't realize they don't seem to have the clean vocals typical of "post hardcore" bands.

"Post hardcore" is used quite widely as it is, and generally you'll find more "post hardcore" covers of pop songs than "metalcore" or even "metal" covers in my experience, since, among other reasons, clean vocals usually help a cover to sound more recognizable. I mainly brought it up because "post hardcore" covers tend to sound closer to "a calamity" as Aurongel put it. Generally "chug-chug-chug/breakdown/angsty styled clean vocals/br00tal screams" bands label themselves as "post hardcore", and these bands tend to perform bad covers of pop songs in my opinion.

Like I said I don't think all "post hardcore" is bad, but the bands that fit the mold I described above produce a lot of pop song covers which are pretty bad unless you're into that style of "post hardcore".

Seriously? No Drewsif Stalin yet?

Time to fix this.

Drewsif Stalin - Wrecking Ball (Miley Cyrus)

He's the dude who won the Miley cover contest on Ryan Seacrest's website. Not...great accolades I know, but more impressive that a metal song of all things won a pop contest.

Not exactly metal covers, but Rock Sugar do some pretty cool mashups of classic pop and rock/metal songs.

Rock Sugar - Don't Stop The Sandman

Rock Sugar - Shook Me Like A Prayer

Rock Sugar - Voices In The Jungle

Off the top of my head:

Turisas - Rasputin (Boney M) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLo02AquUCs
Machinae Supremancy - Gimme More (Britney Spears) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGUqTa04Z6o

I like that Rasputin cover.

Elvenking - Heaven Is A Place On Earth (Belinda Carlisle) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od11FTLdb5E
Vision Divine - Take On Me (A-HA) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIbpYVNqDMM

Love that Elvenking track.
