Mario Kart's graphical poetry in motion: Mona Lisa x Sistine Chapel x Avatar?

EDIT #1: To avoid further confusion and derailment: The thread title was changed by mods. I originally said it's one of the nicest-looking games ever, in my opinion. No references to classic art. :)

ORIGINAL POST:

Wow, now that's not a strong claim, is it? ;)

A disclaimer: I know my avatar has a Luigi hat, and clearly I have a lot of Nintendo love, but I'm a multi-plat gamer with a high-end PC who spent most of last gen on PS3. I've seen my share of pretty games, on all systems.

First, check out the latest trailer in HD. Bear in mind, YouTube is capped at 30 fps; the final game is set to be 60 fps.

What boggles my mind is how incredible Mario Kart 8 looks in motion. Stills don't do it justice at all, so don't bother posting screens. You have to see it in motion.

The colors, the colors, the COLORS! And they all pop with the lighting, shadows, texture detail, shaders, effects, etc. If you traveled back in time to 2011, before we knew the specs of the WiiU, and if you showed me MK8 and told me it was from Nintendo's new console, I would've thought WiiU was equivalent to the PS4. The combination of tech and art direction, with a spectrum of colors most AAA titles seem to forget exist, is simply breathtaking in motion.

And the key phrase is "in motion." Aliasing issues crop up in stills, but when you see it in motion, with Wario's mustache fluttering in the wind, and self-shadowing for each limb and digit on their hands, and the abundance of colors... It's just amazing.

Anyone else surprised by how beautiful this game is looking? I've seen the Witcher 3 GIFs and the other exhibits for graphical fidelity, but few games have impressed me as much as MK8. And honestly, I never would've thought I'd be saying that about a Mario Kart title. These games have always run well, but they've never been known to push the graphical envelope for their system, until now.

I know many people will disagree, perhaps reflexively, but I hope you give the trailer a chance. :)

Yeah, before we go any further, I should acknowledge there are MANY ways games can look beautiful. Comparing them all is a case of comparing apples to oranges. But MK8 is incredibly striking -- that much is for certain.

It looks fucking fantastic. But most important, it looks so insanely fun to play it!

Be kind on Neiteio and his thread title, the man is just generally filled to the brim with hype :)

Never change, brother!

It looks decent for WiiU, nothing more really. Mario games always look nice because of all the colour but there is nothing really impressive there imo.

More than on a technical level, some real talent worked on animations and design. There is so much going on at all times with characters and stages it's mind boggling, a lot of small details everywhere.

I still find this title to be the most visually appealing game on the Wii U so far. Yes, even more than Smash Bros. 4. The environments are just striking and the cartoony charm is still there. The star effect when bumping other players, the wacky movements of the characters, it's a perfect balance.

More hyped for this than Smash Bros., honestly.

And the thing is, there are no other games out there that hold this Pixar-like quality with these cartoon characters. All other games I've seen thus far have been far more realistic and homogeneous in appearance (don't get me wrong, they look fantastic). I'm just saying that to see a game with that Nintendo polish, yet Pixar-esque visuals is a sight to behold.
I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff, really.

The game looks great but threads like this is just attracting the usual Nintendo/Wii U haters to come and shit on it.

I thought it looked like pretty generic Nintendo stuff, in HD. Although that could be your fault, you built this up so much and then I watched the trailer and was rather let down.

What did you hope to accomplish with that title?
I anticipate a lot of disagreement, GAF being a diverse collection of viewpoints and opinions. But perhaps there are some who are equally impressed with the game. The title is what kept running through my mind while watching the trailer, so I figured, hey, it's a bit strong, but it's how I'm feeling at the moment. :)

What's the point of these sensationalist thread titles? Instead of everyone going "yeah, MK8 is a pretty nice looking game", everyone is just going to disagree and post examples of other games.

I posted last night on facebook that this might be the game to get me on WiiU IF, and that's a big if, they do online properly. I won't be a launch buyer, though.

It's a beautiful game that will look great forever (just like Super Mario Sunshine/Super Mario Galaxy) but I have seen far better looking games.

Tomb Raider or Crysis 3 on PC maxed out downsampled makes Mario Kart 8 look like bootie, for example.

Also, after watching that, it's obvious they're continuing to build upon the Nintendo Land engine. The textures and lighting look soo good. I can't wait to see what other Nintendo franchises look like in full 3d, hd, and with this kind of scope (sm3dw does not count to me)

Played it a couple of months ago along with Shadow Fall, BF4 and a bunch of next gen stuff. It was the best looking game of that show for sure.

Opinions, opinions. I think the game looks mediocre at best. Colorful, yes. But nothing even remotely close to "best ever".

...what?

I think it's cool that cartoonish games are soon going to be indistinguishable from their respective television shows and movies.

Pretty much. The title is designed for people to disagree with it. Talk about hyperbolic.

Idk about all thatttt but it does look good. MK games always make me pine for a Mario game with its graphics.

That way of thinking probably works out for people all the time.

Also, it looks okay.
