Monster Hunting Community Game-Along: It's more fun with friends!

GE2_Fami_09-19_002.jpg

After much deliberation and considering your suggestions, I've decided to dub March... MonMonth! As you've probably already guessed from the title, March will be dedicated to all things Monster Hunter and its clones. Let's face it, Monster Hunter has proved to be so popular, particularly in Japan, that it has pretty much become its own genre of games. Rather than limit the month to specifically Monster Hunter games, especially considering how notoriously difficult the series is for newcomers, I've decided the best way to celebrate would be with any Monster Hunter-like titles. And did you know March 11th also happens to be the 10th anniversary of the original Monster Hunter for the PlayStation 2? Good timing, eh? (I swear it was all according to plan)

As always, the aim of the Game-Along is to play games within the theme and talk/write about them, so be sure to utilize #MonMonth on whatever social media (Twitter, Instagram) you like to use! We'll also be using #MonMonth to organize multiplayer gaming sessions, and I hope to see a lot of folks trying out some games for the first time and writing about their experiences! I'll be doing two roundup posts of articles and content created over the month, so be sure to put your contributions where I can see it if you want it included.

Some of you might remember GAF poster Apricot's thread last month, the Dating Sim Community Game-Along. It got a lot of great participation early on, but kind of fizzled out by the end because dating sims are fundamentally very personal sorts of experiences. This time around, she's going with MonMonth for March, in which we all play any number of Hunting games, have fun with one another, and post about the zaniness that goes on.

Toukiden, God Eater 2, Soul Sacrifice/Delta, Monster Hunter 3/4, Ragnarok Odyssey; anything is fair game! Let's play some hunting games this month and just have a good ole time!

As always, the original theme announcement and deets can be found here: http://www.chic-pixel.com/2014/02/introducing-monster-hunter-10th.html

I posted the thread because she's still hilariously a junior, and I love stuff like this.

For what it's worth, I'll probably be playing a ton of God Eater 2 and Soul Sacrifice Delta. The former because it should finally get online this month, and the latter because it's new and shiny. If people are down, I can also migrate back to Monster Hunter 4 as well.

Write blog posts, update here in the thread, tweet using #MonMonth; let's make this a rockin' good time.

EDIT: Here is a Google Doc with corresponding games so you can add yourself and play with pals! Newbies and vets are all welcome! GOOGLE DOC PLAYUH.

SOUND OFF GAF.

Away from my WiiU for about a week, but I'm up for some MH3U online play at some point. I'm only HR2 though.

Fun story: I first started with MHF2 on the PSP and could not get into it. The stupid Congalala kicked my ass repeatedly. Then I played Soul Sacrifice and decided I like the genre, it just finally clicked with me.

Edit: Forgot to mention: NNID Coppanuva

Also can't get the doc to work to add myself, anybody else having luck?

So how is Toukiden? After the demo I just found it to be a severly lacking MH clone. Missing the things that make MH good. Does it get better?

Trying to get into Ultimate 3 MP, since solo'ing it seems kind of impossible outside of a huge time sink.

NNID; gcharlie

I got busy playing other games so I didn't get super far (I think I got to the last world/time period) but Toukiden is a pretty good MH clone. It's an interesting hybrid between MH's weapon combat and Soul Sacrifice's active skill system that gets pretty fast paced.

---

Since I didn't pack my Wii U up I might try to participate with MH3U..or play some GE2 or MH4. Also if we're discussing games, I think Ragnarok Odyssey is poor MH-style game!

Hell ya, this sounds like a great idea.

I still play MH3U on the Wii U regularly. My character name is Zen and my NNID is ZenTea. Just let me know who you are/where you're from (GAF)

Feel free to say hi if you ever see me online and don't hesitate to ask for help. I just hunt for fun now, I have everything I need.

edit: this is going to be a tough month, DS2 is already going to be eating most of my free time.

I guess it's time to re-bust out MH3U and start bringing it and my Circle Pad Pro to work. Then Wii U it up at home.

I played Soul Sacrifice online today for the first time. That frame rate! Fuck hell? Is it much better adhoc?

I'm playing MH3U on the 3DS a lot these days and some Freedom Unite on the vita but neither is online enabled so I'll be going solo.

If people want this thing to be succesful, they need to promise they're going to keep the usual MH discussion. This genre brings the worse of GAF, seriously xD.

I'm going to put my ID there.

Edit: I can't edit the list. Look if you have the right settings. If it's my browser problem can you add me? RalchAC for both PSN and GAF. I have Toukiden and SS.

It don't have some side systems MH have (like cooking or sharpness, for example). Animations have the priority like in MH but the combat system is faster so the gaps where you can't roll are smaller. The Mitama system adds more variety to weapons and changes playstyle quite a bit imo.

And the boss general mechanics are pretty good imo:

- Bosses have two bar. A armour bar (purple) and the HP bar (health)
- The armour bar decreases when you attack the skin of the beast. If it reaches 0 you enter a purple dimensions where you deal damage to the HP bar. You can trigger this state by breaking a part.
- The HP bar decreases when you are in the purple dimension or attack a part you've broken previously.

I find it really fun. But I don't like MH, so maybe we have different tastes and I prefer the more straightforward approach Toukiden has :)

Plunked down some cash for a 3DS XL and MonHun just for this!

Joke. Just coincidence I guess, so am going to place my PSP P3rd hunter a rest and see what's 3U has I n store for me.

Hi! I am fairly new to this genre. I am not as well versed as you guys on this so can I ask you guys what games are a good starting place for this genre? Currently I have Soul Sacrifice and Malicious Rebirth thanks to the PSN sales. I tried MonHun (since that's what most people are clamoring for here) before but got too bored making items so my newbieness to the genre might have a factor to that.

OK you should be able to edit the doc now! Let me know if you can't for whatever reason and I'll add your info in for you

I think Soul Sacrifice would be a fine place to start if you don't mind the aesthetic (I personally hate it, heh). If you're into the colorful anime look, Ragnarok Odyssey is surprisingly fun, though I find it gets a bit button-mashy

Toukiden and Soul Sacrifice are pretty ''low maintenance'' hunting games.

Toukiden are Soul Sacrifice are def pretty noob friendly.

For people no afraid to import, God Eater 2 should be getting its online patch this month, so that might be a good grab for folks looking for something a bit more fast paced.

Ok thanks, I think I'll skip Ragnarok Odyssey for now since there are tons of RO Ace copied circulating here (PH). If I can buy one very cheap without hurting my budget that much I'll go buy one. I am a player of the MMORPG game before.

I am starting to get a hang of this genre so I am generally thankful that they are not that unforgiving to noobs like me. Unfortunately, I can't buy Toukiden right now since I am committed to the game preorders I did for this month. Which is such a shame since there are weekly adhoc sessions here.

Perfect timing. I just went back for more MH3U last week. I started a new character who only uses bows and bowguns. I want to start online soon once I finish up my armor set. I have played a lot on my other character, but this one is fresh. Great chance to play with other people who never touched online. My NNID is Lasdrub.

My MonHun 'narrative' right now is one of rediscovering MH3U through the bow. I mained hammer with a serving of great sword so far, but I've started anew on the village quests with the bow. makes the game a whole new thing of course, and makes every mission interesting to do again. surely for the way it handles weapons this series is one of the most replayable of all time?

I only have MH3U on 3DS so I have to wait until 4 to be able to play with others, hoping the online with it will also rope in some other friends that are curious. I have mostly been playing with the funlance anyway, which I have generally read negative things about using them in co-op games.

I did just beat the Plesioth, unlocking village 7 star quests, so I think I am doing decent solo.

The doc was editable, was just that I linked to the mobile version as I was on my tablet at said time. Or I and Kamion have magic internet powers enabling us to edit it anyway :)

Btw, isn't MH3U playable on 3DS online?

Well this is nicely timed, I think I'll go back into the original God Eater Burst and have fun by my lonesome. I'll post my experiences up here!

Nope you've gotta use a network relay system via Wii U to go online =/

Heh, that's a bummer. When I bought it here in Sweden I got a 3DS, the 3DS game and the game for Wii U, never touched it on 3DS so had no clue:/

Do it! Still, imo, one of the better games.

Added myself to the list, made it to HR 2 in MH3U right before Bravely Default came out in the States and now I'm finishing that up so I'll be diving right back in to MH3U. Looking for some folks to play online with nights and weekends potentially.

Yeah and the system's pretty messy set up without the Ethernet adaptor

Gonna try that as well lol, but Toukiden first after I finish Dangan Ronpa's story mode XD

So how do I participate Ryouga? I've put almost 100 hours to Toukiden already and I might rest from it a little while. I'll probably picked MH3U next from where I left off.

Toukiden put different emphasis from Monster Hunter on its gameplay. While the latter truly lived up to its name being Monster Hunter, the former pretty revolved around breaking apart the bosses body part. The demo itself is quite representative to the basic of the game, but it doesn't show the exact depth that the mitama system had. You won't be able to flying up mid air attacking onis horn or arms using dual-dagger and chain&sickle anywhere else.

Soul Sacrifice -> Toukiden -> Monster Hunter
Do that in order, and you perhaps will be able to appreciate the three games fairly like me.
I actually think Monster Hunting games are far more fun when playing alone. Nice thread, tho.
Thank goodness to Omega Force for gracing us with decent AI companion Nagi.

Ill be getting Soul Sacrifice Delta this weekend. So theres that for me cept will only be around on weekends as work has picked up and no time during the weekdays anymore. D:

This seems like a nice thread to subscribe to. Out of the games listed, I only have Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on Wii U. I was just playing it with a friend the other day, we stayed up rather late just for "one more hunt", haha. My current goal has been to get a Brach Pallium, but no success so far. My friend found 3 in one hunt though! Wish I had that luck, but that's the desire sensor at work, right?

I'm very busy with school, but I might add my name to the list in case there are any group plays. I've actually had no experience in a group of 3 or more, so it might be interesting to try out sometime. Maybe once I complete my gunner armor I'll try out the bow, whereas I'm usually used to long sword.

So yeah, lurking this thread.

Me too :)

That's why i prefer those with ai companions and proper story mode.

So far the ones i liked:

1. GEB
2. Soul Sacrifice
3. Toukiden

Out of curiosity, have either of you done much of the guild quests? I was getting wrecked in the Crimson Quropeco village quest, fuck Deviljho, and it made me fearful of getting deep into the guild quests with only one Shakalaka to support me.

I thought you allowed to bring 2 shakalaka in MH3U.

First time I did that I forgot to bring dung bombs but couldn't be bothered to start over again so I endured and did beat him, spending a lot more time than I should've while sniping Quro inbetween Devlijoe constantly crashing the party.

It's cool that the MH style is becoming a genre in itself with variations on the theme spinning off, copycats or not, but one of the reasons none of them have really caught on with me so far is the setting and the monsters themselves- the earthy, 'realistic' monsters based on actual present or prehistorical animals appeal to me so much more than demons with magic and horror movie creatures . Same goes for the world itself. I don't want a lot of sci-fi, I don't want a 'dark' world and I don't care for too much magic being included.

[oops, sorry, didn't mean to double post]

The great thing about offline Tanzia Port quests is that you get to bring both Shakas with, just like with Moga Village. Also, when going after Crim Quro, make sure to bring dung bombs to scare off Jho, and sonic bombs to interrupt Quro's songs.

Actually added myself for both Soul Sacrifice and Ragnarok Odyssey - two games which I've owned for a long time but never really played! I hope to play with some of you. :)

Do it! Still, imo, one of the better games.

Yeah, I started it a couple of months ago and liked it. I think I got up to Difficulty 3? It's a fun game and I like the fact that there's a story attached to it.

Oh really? I thought you could only bring one.

Also, I had some dung bombs but I must have been using them incorrectly, is there a specific method to scare him off?

I did beat the quest, but he was behind me every time I turned around.

Bring dung bombs for Higher Ranks period, helps a lot to get rid of Deviljho and when you are pinned down by a monsters grab move.

Played online recently and so many lower HR folks got killed by Deviljho's bite attack and they never brought dung bombs even hot drinks... for tundra =/

Throw dung bomb wait a while and the monster will leave, offline Tanzia quest you can bring both Cha Cha and Kayamba, online and if one other player has them set to follow they and you can bring only one of them.
