Guilt over oversight during PS4 purchase

Last week I made a thread about a great PS4 deal I got from ebay here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=794141&highlight=

While I still haven't received it, I woke today morning and discovered something I wish I absolutely did NOT. I found that I had a coupon from ebay offering 10% discount on all things above $75 (expires tomorrow) from a time well before I placed my order. Unfortunately, ebay does not have a system in place to inform you of the existence of coupon at the checkout past the initial email. It would have knocked down the price from $543 to $495 had I not forgotten to implement it allowing me to make the most of two great opportunities.

To put things into perspective, I recently lost $85 because I trusted someone else's information without personal verification and now this is the second oversight in less than 3 weeks.

As a penance I have decided to sell it off on Kijiji (after I get the package):

A few more details:
  • I am currently a student and do not play games on principle during an ongoing semester (so far).
  • The folks I reside with have a PS3 and 360.
  • I bought the console on impulse even though I knew that I would play it for the upcoming two months (may be even that) and then no more till May 2015.
  • I currently have around 40 games in backlog for PS3 and 360.
  • The current residence (understandably) lacks audio visual set up that I have at home.
  • One of the two cats in house likes to scratch herself against most objects (incl. PS3) leaving tufts of hair behind (I am a very clean person when it comes to consoles and their controllers).

All things considered, am I doing the right thing? Because I am conflicted, outside perspectives would be more objective.

This is a gaming console, not a debate whether you should give one of your kidneys to a friend. The only good answer is the one that makes you happy. If you are already feeling buyer's remorse, then get rid of it.

So, had you not found out about the coupon, you'd be OK with the purchase? Just block it out of your mind man.

So you buy a 543 dollar console "on impulse" and then feel gutted over missing out on a deal that would've made it 40 dollars cheaper?

Come on bro, snap out of it.

I do that all the time. Buy something on impulse, and regret it. I always just say fuck it and get over it. Not worth it to stress yourself out over an unimportant decision. If you don't want the console anymore just sell it.

So a coupon is stopping you from enjoying something. A coupon that you knew nothing about at the time of purchase. Just let it go. If you enjoy the system keep it, if not get rid of it.

Not sure what penance you mean. If you were selling it for less than you got if for, then i'd underdstand, but you are making money off of it.

All the information provided suggests you made an illogical and stupid impulsive buy. Especially given your occupation, the fact that you'll rarely be able to play it for over a year, your backlog, and the deal you're making over a coupon. :P

I waste money on shit all the time. $85 is nothing, you'll get over it. Take solace in the fact that everybody blows money sometimes and that you will eventually get use out of the PS4. You'll be fine.

Sounds like a case of undiagnosed OCD to me, OP.

Every reply that crossed my mind, right here.

Honestly, I don't think you'll feel comfortable with either decision.

ikr?

you might as well keep it.

If you bought it on impulse and can't actually afford it then sell. If you bought it on impulse and can afford (as in its not going prohibit you from paying bills, buying food, other leisure activities you'd rather do) then keep it. Sounds like you and your roomies will get use out of it. Try not to feel guilty unless you actually needed that money for real world shit man.

I recommend visiting your nearest Catholic Church and confessing immediately, as what you've done is literally worse than murder.

Make sure your penance involves a hair shirt and self-flagellation too.

As a penance, if you fail report your profit as income, I'll be informing the CRA of these transactions.

Sounds like you won't really use it right now, selling it off is a good call.

I think you might have a problem. Admitting it is the first step though, so congrats! Sell it off and start using your money more responsibly. Games ain't everything. If you're feeling this bad over them, then you're obviously doing something very, very wrong.

Rofl, you're selling the console because you missed out on ~40 bucks?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Dude needs a therapist, not a PS4.

Harsh, but this was my initial reaction.

What is the issue here? You made a minor mistake and it cost you 40 bucks. Shit sucks, but it happens all the time. You won't die over 40 bucks.

Why the immediate rush to punish yourself? Do you not actually WANT a PS4? Can you not afford it? If not, why did you buy it? Isn't it likely that you will rebuy a PS4 in the future, and thus that you will lose more by reselling the damn thing than you did by forgetting the coupon? Isn't it true that if you'd never had the coupon you'd have no issue with the price you paid? Isn't it true that if you'd completely forgotten about the coupon that you'd just be enjoying you purchase? Why are you doing any of the things that you are doing? They make no sense. Relax and play some video games.

Bought My PS4 used from Cowboom for 360 (Now 340)

Grabbed a second Controller for 40 on Amazon Warehouse Deals

Got all my games for free with Playstation plus that I already had for Vita.

Deal Hunting should be a culture man

EDIT: Saw that you are buying in Canada. SOrry bro :(

There's not much for it at the moment. So it's a fair question.

Just remember, you sell it off now, and you'll have to save up for another at a later time. And probably around Autumn this year, there will be some games you want to play.

Tough choice.

Yeah, this is normal. And I hate it.

If you really need the money op, then I don't see why not, the ps4 is still building a library anyways.

Where did you learn to be mean to yourself, OP?

That story makes my heart bleed. Be good to yourself. Dont fuck yourself over because of mild indiscretions that have no negative impact on anything or anyone outside of your guilt tripped mind.

No need for penance over $40. It sucks but it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, especially since you already got a deal.

That said, if you're only going to use it for two months in the next year and you're upset about $40, just sell it and wait. The console and games will be significantly cheaper and you can tear in once you have the time.

It's going to be around forever from now on. Basically for the rest of your life, the PS4 will be available. You will be able to get one later if you want to then.

This is my question. The use of the terms 'penance' and 'guilt' makes me think that the guy has plenty of money, and this is simply an issue of self-punishment and negative thinking. Which would be stupid, and he'd want to go get that looked at. Feeling guilty over 40 bucks is dumb as hell. Doing 'penance' over not getting the best deal makes a mockery of the concept of penance.

Why do you have to punish yourself for buying a console? Keep it, play the games already released that you want to play on it now, and then you'll still have it for the future when the other games you want to play are released. E3 is only a few months away too, so we'll be getting even more games.
