The Crew's microtransactions let you buy performance parts with real world cash

The Crew will feature microtransactions that allow players to purchase new performance parts using real-world money, Ubisoft has revealed.

The system appears to be similar to the monetisation model found in many free-to-play games, with players able to earn in-game credits by completing missions and challenges, or short-cutting the process by purchasing currency with real cash.

"We can confirm that performance parts can be unlocked through progression as well as microtransactions," a Ubisoft representative told VideoGamer.com. "All content can be unlocked through progression, but for busy gamers who want to save some time, they will have the opportunity to buy some items in-game."

"Everything in the game has got this dual currency approach," creative director Julian Gerighty told us during a recent press tour. "We're not going to stop you from progressing [if you don't spend money], but it'll be more time."

Although this will probably be seen as something new and shocking, I remember NFS: Carbon doing the same thing back in '06 / '07. It was bogus then too.

I get why this sort of thing happens in F2P games but the 'time-saving' thing rings hollow in full priced games. If you want to save me time, give me cheat codes.

As long as the progression curve is not gimped or artificially inflated... but yeah.. that will probably happen. Oh well Crew, it was nice thinking of you as a game I may be interested in

If you're so busy that you don't have the time to unlock these things by typical gameplay grinding, maybe Ubisoft should look at selling a "play now" version for $100 more dollars that has every pay option unlocked and ready to go. Since that's basically what they're promoting right?

Remember that thread about instant turn off's to a game?

Yeah, that just happened.

Too bad, I was sort of interested in the idea behind this game. No longer, I'm afraid.

You can sell me a game, or you can push out a F2P and try and bleed me with microtransactions. But I'll never accept charging me full price and bleeding me.

I was actually interested in the idea of an open world online racing game. Microstransactions for non-aesthetic items kills it for me.

Well, that made me lose any interest I had in the game.

Hell, I avoid F2P games in general (though I'm more likely to try them out because it's no loss to me but unless they super impress me and I really feel the F2P hasn't affect how they make gameplay I refuse to pay for microtransactions. Only one game ever managed to pass that test). I find in general they are grindy and get boring to play really quick (gee, I wonder why... maybe to encourage me to pay to avoid all the grind). If I'm going to pay for a game, it's going to be because you made it fun to play, not because you tried some psychology trick to get me to pay more.

And asking me to pay for a game that has F2P mechanisms? Hell no! I might try it if it is free cause even if I'm skeptical at least it costs me nothing. Wanting me to pay for a game I'm pretty sure is going to be compromised to try to get me to pay more? hahahahahahahaa. Yeah right.

That's what they do these day: selling cheat code as a pretext of saving time device for you.
RIP cheat code

Fuck that. Unlocking stuff is one thing but I'm not grinding endlessly just to get one shitty part or playing forever to unlock the same random object over and over again in some bullshit lotto system. The F2P model in full priced games is horribly broken.

Ubisoft can go to hell.

I saw the trailer from today and my first thought was that I hoped this game didn't had any microtransactions.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait and see which racer suits my need come holiday season. This surely won't.

If this were a F2P game, I could understand. But from a full-priced game? I'm not exactly a happy camper in that regard. My main worry is that the game will literally turn "Pay 2 Win", as people who spend more money will have an obvious advantage over others - especially considering The Crew has been mainly advertised with its online component in the past.

Please DriveClub....Release soon to release us from this hellish microtransaction crap in racing game now a day.

I remember they said that DriveClub was going to have a substantial number of buyable cars when it was first announced, hopefully they got rid of that with the extra time.

So we pay 60 to play the game and then we can pay again to get shit faster? Fuck that. Lost interest in this game.

Micro transactions are killing gaming for me. I don't mind some grinding, but it feels like I have to grind for 20hrs to get something that costs 1$ through micro transactions.

...because spending more time on development requires less revenue to recoup those costs, of course.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if Sony seriously consider making DC microtransaction-free purely for its potential at driving hardware sales; have it as a loss leader to promote the hardware. It's an option; one I don't think they'll take, but something they'd be wise to at least consider carefully.

I love how these publishers act like they're the only game in town. On any given month there are more games released than I can ever hope to buy. Things like this make my purchasing decisions that much easier.

I'm guessing the game is also designed in such a way that earning the upgrades takes forever. I honestly wouldn't have a problem with this practice if it didn't affect the game but it always does.

We're living in a world where Forza 5 and Crimson Dragon exists, so yes.

Thanks for letting me know Ubisoft. You have now guaranteed that I won't buy this game no matter how good it is.
