All of Ghibli's films
All of Satoshi Kon's films
Gits 1995
Sword of the Stranger

Plan to watch:
Wolf Children
Patlabor 2
Colourful

What notable films am i missing out on?

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Summer Wars
Garden of Words
Blue Exorcist: The Movie (if anything to see how beautiful it is)
Redline

Do yourself a favor and watch Tekkonkinkreet if you're a fan of Satoshi Kon.

Redline
Wings of Honneamise
Akira
Dirty Pair: Project Eden
Space Adventure Cobra
Galaxy Express 999
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Mobile Suit Gundam / Soldiers of Sorrow / Encounters in Space
Macross Plus
Macross Frontier - The False Songstress / The Wings of Goodbye
(I would actually recommend avoiding Macross DYRL unless you're already familiar with robotech or the original Macross tv series. It's pretty, but it doesn't stand alone. It's an awesome companion piece if you are familiar though)

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Summer Wars
The Garden of Words
Time of Eve
The Wings of Honneamise
Angel's Egg
Beautiful Dreamer
Akira

The OP didn't say whether they liked the original GitS but if they did, I would recommend its sequel, GitS 2: Innocence. I thought it was really impressive, and I get something new out of it every time I see it.

Akira
Voices of a Distant Star
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise
Gauche the Cellist (technically pre-Ghibli)
Nasu: Summer in Andalusia
Redline
Memories
Steamboy
Metropolis
Dead Leaves
The Place Promised in Our Early Days
Children Who Chase Lost Voices
Colorful
Welcome to the Space Show
Wonderful Days
Tekkon Kinkreet
Sword of the Stranger
Hotarubi no Mori e
Cencoroll

Patlabor 2

I dearly love Patlabor 2. However, I want to make sure you've already seen the first Patlabor film, otherwise you're going to be moderately lost. Also, you'll probably get more out of Patlabor 2 if you've also seen the first OVA series.

What notable films am i missing out on?

Well, let's see...

Aim for the Ace!

Arcadia of my Youth
Crayon Shin-chan: The Adult Empire Strikes Back
Dirty Pair: Project Eden
Fist of the North Star
Flying Ghost Ship

Gauche the Cellist
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Jin-Roh
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
Lupin III: Fuma Clan Conspiracy
Macross: Do You Remember Love?
Memories
Metropolis
Mind Game
Nasu: Summer in Andalusia
Neo Tokyo
Project A-ko
Redline
Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise
Summer Wars
They Were Eleven

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (My favorite anime movie)
Spirited Away
Digimon the Movie (I'm not a fan of Digimon but I really loved this movie)
Summer Wars (I enjoyed this but I felt the family stuff was too much at times)
5 Centimeters Per Second
Wolf Children
The Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below

Patlabor 1 & 2
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagilostro (Miyazaki's first movie and one of his best)
Memories
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Summer Wars
Wolf Children
Voices of a Distant Star
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise
Redline
Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door (still a great, fun sci-fi adventure movie even if you haven't seen the series)

There are a lot of good recommendations in here so far. I'm going to second Summer Wars, Akira, Wings of Honneamise, and Redline. They're all films I enjoyed a lot.

This one might be dicier, but while I don't care much for the earlier works, I think the fifth Kara no Kyoukai movie, "Spiral Paradox", is really impressive. It'd be confusing to jump into an already-confusing movie without much context, but if you know the basic background of the characters, I think you can still enjoy it on its own terms.

Also check out:

Neo Tokyo and Blood the last Vampire. Great stuff :)

And I always enjoyed R.O.D, it never gets enough praise!!!

MINDGAME was great if a little heavy on the philosophy
Paprika is incredible
Redline has the best 2D animation I have ever seen. Period.

Akira (if you liked GiTS, you should like this)
5 Centimeters Per Second (if nothing else, watch it for the art)
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

That's one of the best anime lists I have ever seen.

Let me thank you by linking the remaining three

Thank you very much! I hope the OP (or anyone else, really) finds it to be of use. Also, thanks for providing a link to the flicks I didn't want to delve into too deeply while on the clock.

Also, while I'm at it, here's a shout out to two excellent movie compilations of television shows: the three Touch movies and the original Gundam movie trilogy.

As great as Superflat Monogram is it's not what I was thinking of and it's really more of a short!

You're no fun.

The scary thing is that we've hit nearly all the best anime films ever made in a single page!

Is there a reason you're trying to avoid mentioning Digimon Adventure: Bokura no War Game?
