So Dutch-GAF, I just arrived in Rotterdam and the first thing I did was go to the supermarket to buy this

shit is off the hook

lol it is super addictive but with absolutely no redeeming nutritional value.

How much will it cost to ship a container off this back with me to Denmark?

Note, I bought the crunchy version and I can't imagine the smooth would be better.

It was really popular here in Belgium for a little while (everyone I knew discovering it and praising it) but you get tired of it really fast (dégoût)

and as you said: 0 nutritional value

Speculoos, much like gabber and Febo, confirms that dutch people have no taste.

Shipping heavy boxes with TNT is pretty cheap though, so knock yourself out!

I must say I have a new found respect for the Low Countries.

How they have this and not be fatter than America is hard to fathom.

It's because we have it as well:

I should mention that I am eating it straight out of the jar with a spoon and washing it down with red wine, because

1. I don't want to dilute it with bread
2. The red wine will save my arteries

This is my experience too. It was nice/okay for a while, but now I have no need to every try it again.
OP will definitely regret shipping in a container.

I feel the cooky variant, speculaas, has much more longevity.

If you're smart about it, get some proper Pindakaas, it will blow your mind mate.

Speculoos is good, Dutch peanutbutter is boss.

Tonight, go find a snackbar and order the following: a Frietje met, a Kroket and a Frikandel Speciaal

Speculoos is one of the few things that I actually find revolting, and I can eat almost everything. It's great for you guys that you like it but I think it's weird how it is always praised like the second coming of Jesus or something.
Edit: Go buy some Calvé Pindakaas like Aiii said.

I see, looks like the Dutch are made of sterner stuff to resist this temptress.

To be honest, I didn't like it much. It got tired of it after half a teaspoon. I'd rather have good peanut butter or nutella than this.

Also, I prefer the cookies to this.

Actually the cookie variant is speculoos too. Speculaas has a different taste due to the added spices. The 'loos' in speculoos means 'without' and the 'spec' is short for 'specerij' which means spice. Speculaas is common in the Netherlands, while speculoos is typically Belgian.

My wife loves it, I introduced her to all of my Belgian stuff ha, hard to get the less known stuff though but that one is pretty easy to find in the US now ;)

The variation speculoos is derived from the French word for speculaas.

It kinda says what I did? It's not only derived from the French word, it's a different cookie. Or did you only read the bolded part? What's the source of the etymological part?

Its pretty good, but nothing beats having the original cookie dipped into coffee and placed on your bread with some butter.

the pasta is the easy/cheap way out.

Its like having regular meth and then doing the blue breaking bad meth.

That always confused the fuck out of me. Now I know.

It's delicious. Popular in north of France too.

There is a bakery near my job which have a french pastry with speculoos.

OK.

Does anyone have any suggestions for some authentic Dutch food or Rotterdam specialty that I should try out while in town?

I don't know...drop? There's like an 80% you'll hate it though.

I picked up a jar of that stuff from the store one day on a whim. Here in the USA it's called Biscoff Spread

It was gone by the end of the week. It's absolutely delicious, but unlike peanut butter, if you take a spoonful of it, it doesn't stick around your mouth at all. Really weird.

I typically would just snag a spoonful of it a couple of times a day when I walked past the pantry. Delicious as fuck, but not something I need to be keeping in my house.

My parents had a jar of Cookie Butter they got from a friend after visiting Trader Joe's. That stuff is amazing, especially with pretzels.

I made a Cookie Butter and Nutella sandwich. Living dangerously I tell ya!

I had a speculoos flavoured macaroon when I was in France last week. Seriously cinnamony.

Nothing beats the biscuits though. Makes the coffee worthwhile

I know GAF have been waiting for my update so here it is:

Day 2: ate some more speculoos for breakfast. This time the stuff was at room temperature whereas on Day 1 it was slightly chilled.

I find that it is better when slightly chilled. It is a bit nastier/greasier when taken at room temperature.

So I am home after having spent 4 days in Rotterdam eating nothing but Speculoos and Kapsalon.

I am so sick of it now lol
