Long story short, like many Canadian youth of the 90's, I was heavily into Anime. As time grew on (And the choices for Anime on TV became less and less,) I fell out of touch, only drifting back through High School Anime club meetings (Which were still great, as I saw a few more series I've kept with me, such as Black Jack and Gurren Laugen. It's been a while since then, so I kind of reached the farthest point away from the medium as I could get.

That all changed when the fire nation attacked I witnessed a local convention's AMV contest and holy mothercunting tapdancing tiity fuck, I was blown away. The visual styles on display, as well as the designs of characters/worlds just floored me (AMV's are usually made of the best parts of series, but the series themselves without effects/music looked kickass as well). It's like a fire re-ignited within me that was long lost. As I gazed at the big screen, I took note of the Animes that caught my attention, so I could either view them through streaming services or buy the physical releases of them (Mind you, I'm not super totally behind, as the last series I watched to completion was Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt.)

The ones I noted (And would like some feedback on if they're good or not. (I'm open to trying anything. I'm basically treating this like a rebirth into the medium, so don't say "it's good if you like _____ Animes")) are:

Hotsuharu (my spelling's off) and Arnkawa under the bridge
Elfen Lied (I know this isn't modern, it just caught my eye is all.)
Fate/Zero
Soul Eater
Princess Jellyfish
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Kuroko's Basketball
Kid's on the Slope
Attack on Titan
Kill La Kill
Toradora
MM (Not sure if this was the full name, the AMV was only 30 seconds long)
Blue Exorcist
Magi the Labyrinth
Is This a Zombie?

Also, as the title says. I'd like it if the experts of Anime GAF would also direct me to more modern series (Within the last two years is modern enough in my book) that are mostly liked by a good amount of people, or are your personal favorites. If possible, I'd also like to know if your choice is licensed and available on physical media/Streaming services, or if I have to resort to fansubs. I'd ask this to the general Anime community thread as well, but community threads are usually graveyards.

I figure if anyone should know about this stuff, it'd be GAF, so fire away on your recommendations. (I'll probably buy your picks at the previously mentioned con's vendor booth.)

Yamato 2199 is all you need.

All I can say is the BDs are expensive, but for me worth it. Only two volumes are out now in the US.

The Jojo's Bizarre Adventure anime adaption is worth checking out. The Monogatari series and Katanagatari by Shaft are also worth mention.

I tried this with Attack on Titan recently and man was it a bad choice to do that kinda thing. So, not that.

series has some highs but my biggest issue with Anime is padding and filler episodes and JESUS is that series slow

not watching another ep until it's entirely finished

Are you ok with books? I recommend these mangas for now.

Berserk (Dark, medieval with amazing character development. Souls games were inspired by it)

Monster (suspense with one of the best villains of all time. Very engaging and has an interesting story)

20th Century Boys (written by the same guy who made Monster. Very recommend. It's a little longer than Monster but the story is worth it)

Beelzebub (pure comedy. It's one of my favorite random beat them up mangas out there.)

As for anime I recommend you getting into Gintama. It's amazing in every aspect but starts off slow.

yes

they also receive bonus points for not having pomf pomf uguu~ moe lolicons.

though joseph is p. moe.

You have a pretty good list there! I would say that the only one that is pretty bad is "Is This a Zombie?" but heck I even watched most of that... The rest is worth a watch although it might not all be to your tastes!

For a recommendation I would suggest "Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World)" - has a few rough spots but really enjoyable overall!

Fate/Zero
Surprisingly great prequel that progressively gets darker and darker and it has some very nice visuals. You'd have to watch it on overpriced Blu-Ray or DVD from Aniplex sold for several hundreds of dollars unless you import the region locked UK/Australian Blu-Ray/DVD sets.

It's not from the last 2 years, but I highly recommend Michiko & Hatchin, available on 2 DVD/BD combo sets from Funimation. It's kinda like an anime version of Thelma and Louise and it takes place in Latin America which is rare for an anime.

Elaborating on Fate/Zero I'd reccommend that you read the VN Fate Stay/Night that its a prequel to. Watching F/Z would spoil some things in F/SN if you ever decided to check it out.

Most of these are titles are from 2011-present. Going by my MyAnimeList ratings here.

Not on your list:

Anohana - Tear-jerker drama. Not the best written, but great characters.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - grounded drama, handles serious themes. Example of an anime that doesn't have typical anime styled tropes and presentation.

Nichijou - slapstick, skit-based comedy. Holy balls level of animation.

Nagi no Asukara - fantasy drama, a contemporary take on the mermaid and Japanese mythology. One of the prettiest shows ever.

Space Dandy - action comedy sci-fi anthology. Very well animated/written and pays lots of homages.

Noragami - Action comedy that involves Japanese gods and shrines without being fucking confusing. Great action and animation.

Monogatari series (not sure if you watched this before or not since it started a while ago) - art-house styled contemporary fantasy. Amazing visuals but the presentation is highly polarizing.

Little Witch Academia - light-hearted fantasy, only one episode long. An example of a perfectly executed first episode that all shows should look at.

Girls und Panzer - Girls participate in team-based tank tournament using tanks from previous world wars. Schools are city-sized warships in the ocean. It's awesome.

On your list:

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - One of the big standouts from the past few years. Interesting take on magical girls and is a mix of genres I can get behind.

Kill la Kill - Though you've seen TTGL, and it doesn't reach the same heights. Still entertaining.

Attack on Titan - My interest started tapering off after the first quarter, but it's worth checking out if you like dark, gritty fantasy.

I recently started Fate/Zero myself, with no familiarity from its previous series, and the beginning dry as FUUUUUCK. It does get interesting later on, but... fuck man.

The anime community thread is the opposite of a graveyard, for better and for worse.

Wolf Children
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Time of Eve(crunchyroll)
Little Witch Academia
Usagi Drop(crunchyroll)
Hyouka
The Garden of Words
Space Battleship Yamato 2199
Space Dandy(Funimation)
Girls und Panzer(crunchyroll)
The Eccentric Family(crunchyroll)
Flowers of Evil(crunchyroll)
The Tatami Galaxy(Funimation, Hulu)
Fate/Zero(crunchyroll)
From the New World(crunchyroll)

Don't watch Elfen Lied

Don't watch Elfen Lied. Seriously.

If you're in it for the animation try finding something by KyoAni. Hyouka is one of their more well received shows in recent years. Nichijou is also good.

Also the community thread is anything but a graveyard.

What I've seen on your list:

Elfen Lied - Just gory for gory's sake. Poorly done. Probably not worth your time.
Kill La Kill - The equivalent of a popcorn blockbuster. Tons of unappologetic fanservice and crazy action, but really dumb and there are some lazy animation mixed with jawdropping stuff. Worth your time if you don't mind dumb. 2013 AnimeGAF Anime of the Year Runner-up.
Toradora! - Great RomCom. Seriously, great. Watch this if you like comedy and romance; it has it in spades and is near spotless.

What I know from secondhand off your list:

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - Apparently a slow start but gets crazy. Seems to be worth it.
Attack on Titan - Just started. Dark with lots of mainstream appeal. Apparently huge pacing issues. 2013 AnimeGAF Anime of the Year 3rd-place finisher.
MM! - All I know is it's about a masochist and there's cross-dressing and you might want to steer clear.

What I would suggest:

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - Awesome Space Opera. AnimeGAF's 2013 Anime of the Year. SO GOOD.
Inferno Cop - JUST WATCH DON'T ASK QUESTIONS
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo - SciFi retelling of the literary classic. AMAZING artwork and style. Great voice casts in English and Japanese.
Clannad/Clannad: After Story - If you like bittersweet romances and can stomach an okay first season and KEY-moeblob art, then Clannad (and especially AS) is heartwretching and absolutely one of my favorites.
Code Geass - This is a ride. Death Note-ish Cat-and-Mouse games at the beginning with a very Light-like protagonist, but man it goes places. It really does. Go in blind and avoid spoilers as best you can.
Majestic Prince - Cool recent mecha show with some awesome action and a lot of mecha-show in-jokes and gags. Not without flaws, but fun.
5 Centimeters Per Second - Another bittersweet romance but in movie form. Amazing artwork; all of Shinkai's films are basically scenery porn. Watch this. If you like it, I'd suggest his other films too (Voices from a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and The Garden of Words)
Space Dandy - Johnny Bravo in Space with some of the slickest animation you'll find. Can be inconsistent but it's awesome, baby. Second half of the series coming this fall so you have time to catch up.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - Another film and has just about everything I want in a good movie. Action, comedy, a touching story, stellar animation. It has it all. If you like it, you should also check out Hosoda's other movies (Summer Wars and Wolf Children) because they're just as awesome.

Also: The AnimeGAF community thread is not a graveyard. At all. We post around 500 posts per day on average.

Fansubbed:
Hozuki no reitetsu - wacky stories in Japans version of hell
Log Horizon - nice "mmorpg"-style story, suprisingly good for what it is
Suisei no Gargantia - despite nice concept the story falls flat at the end, but nice enough to watch
very oldish (2006), no idea if it's still available: Honey&Clover (season 1) - lots of feelings, dawww, ;__;, *happy*
Space Brothers: it's brother, it's space, it has (wannabe)astronauts and an ugly pug - why are you not watching it right now?

Lisenced:
Shin sekai yori / From the new world (psychic kids in a sort of oldstyle japanese society)
Magi (a very very free adaption of sindbad with lots of magic and djinns and stuff, supossedly though the manga is better - I only liked the first season which was fun)

"slightly" older, lisenced but no guarantee of availability:
Planetes (garbage collectors in space)
Moribito / Guardian of the spirit (cool female _adult_ warrior that protects a young prince from his fathers soldiers)
Gankutsuou: Count of Monte Christo (see title, but it's set in the future. An anime that makes you read the original book cannot be bad)
Princess Tutu (it's a very free adaption of ugly duckling/swanlake as far as I remember)

Manga:
20th Century Boys, Monster (iirc: 6 childhoodfriends make up a story 30 years later the story becomes reality and the friend takes over the world
/ iirc: a doctor charged with murder that travells through germany hunting for the true murderer )
Berserk (gud, but only if you like an still going story with 30+ books and counting)
Basara (A girl takes on the destiny of her dead brother to topple the empire of her continent but she and one of the princes fall in love with each other.
Gets really ;__; in the last few books. Great art, story and characters. There's also an incomplete anime)

+1 for Attack on Titan (beware, slow moving), Kill la Kill (very... o.O ... =O )

From your list I heartily recommend Fate/Zero. It's great throughout but goes into overdrive from episode 16 on. (Available on Crunchyroll and I think Netflix)

AoT is good too, though characters and pacing aren't exactly its strong suit.

Seeing as you were impressed by visual style, try FLCL if you haven't seen it yet.

I would, for the time being, put off waching KlK, there's better stuff out there.

The Tatami Galaxy is by far my favorite anime, hell anything by Masaaki Yuasa will work. His current series Ping Pong the Animation is genius, despite the fact that I have no interest in ping pong.

Also, The Tatami Galaxy is weird when it comes to a western release. I guess Funimation didn't think it would sell well in the states, but still wanted to bring it over somehow, so it's available on YouTube and Hulu with subs.

Check out Kyousougiga on Crunchyroll!

It's pretty underrated and also pretty good.

I also recommend Humanity Has Declined.

I'm just going to list some excellent ones, Idk which one you haven't seen yet.

Blue Exorcist (high school action, demons and magic)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (if you can only watch one, I recommend Brotherhood over the original)
Samurai Flamenco (warning, its really weird, almost a parody of multiple things, but its addicting)
Eyeshield 21 (football, if you're into sports)
Fairy Tail (adventure, fantasy magic)
Black Butler (dark theme, demons, a tiny bit erotic)
Sword Art Online (virtual reality MMORPG video game)

Fate/Zero is also on Netflix.

Fate/Zero is the only good thing about the franchise anyway.
By first playing Fate/Stay Night you'd spoil Fate/Zero for yourself, and arguably in a much larger way.

OP, check out Yamato 2199, Fate/Zero and JoJo. Those rock.

Crunchyroll.com is a great site to watch most of the current and modern anime series.

Series I'd recommend (both of these are on Crunchyroll!):
Kill la Kill
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Start from Part 1 Phantom Blood)

Wait til the end of this year for the new Fate Stay/Night series

Check out Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

The 2011 Hunter X Hunter series is great and is well regarded here on GAF.

Jojo, HunterxHunter 2011, One Outs, Kaiji, Steins;Gate, Psycho Pass, Mirai Nikki, Hajime no Ippo (oldish, but the latest season, Rising, ended last month).

I've been on an anime kick myself recently. Finished Kill la Kill the other week, it was fun but nothing that amazing.

I also just got done Samurai Flamenco, which is this send up/deconstruction of Japanese super hero shows, starts kind of slow but stick with it, I enjoyed it a lot.

From my experiences from recent anime
Absolute must watches:

Steins;gate
Madoka
Jojo
Kyousogiga

Fun shows you might like:
Kill la kill
Attack on titan
Monogatari series(this can get confusing to follow, so try to look up what order the series goes in)
Space dandy
Fate/zero(dont watch fate/stay night, it is not very good. Apparently the vn is supposed to be pretty good though)
Samurai flamenco
Star driver

you should watch mushishi and if you like it you can watch the second season which is airing now. also watch inukami since i never see people recommend it and its pretty good. kamichu is another good series.

Welcome to the NHK anime is not as good as its manga counterpart from what I recall hearing long ago...

Within the last two years? I'd go with:
The Flowers of Evil
Ping Pong
Fate/Zero
Tsuritama
Yamato 2199
Hyouka
Gundam Build Fighters

Also Wolf Chidlren and the Blue Exorcist movie if you're open to some movies as well.
