Watch_Dogs Pre-load Won’t Be Available on PS4; Feature Will Start With Destiny

Dual-shock me if old.

The addition of a pre-load feature for pre-ordered games on the Sony Entertainment Network with PS4 firmware 1.7 made many assume that the option would debut with Watch_Dogs, but apparently that won’t be the case.

Sony Computer Entertainment just updated its Knowledge Center page mentioning that only certain titles will take advantage of the option, and that Destiny in September will be the first to offer it.

I contacted PlayStation support to ask for confirmation, and I was told that this is indeed true, and that Watch_Dogs won’t be available for pre-load because the developer doesn’t allow it.

Unfortunately it’s a fact that pre-load opportunities do indeed need to be negotiated with a game’s publisher, so it looks like we’ll have to wait for September in order to enjoy pre-loading our games on PS4.

Below you can see the Knowledge Center page before and after the update, and a chat log of my conversation with Sony’s rep.

Wonder if they struck up some sort of deal?

... It'd figure if it was made BEFORE delays hit, and now they're strung up by some arbitrary restriction as a result.

They're advertising this on the PS Store too. It says that preloading for Destiny can begin on September 4, with the game releasing on September 9.

We have to wait 4 months to use preloading?

Unless a developer speaks up for a game coming before Destiny, sounds like it. I read this like Ubi didn't ask Sony for the pre-load stuff or simply didn't pay attention. Not every new game is gonna use the consoles immediate brand new software abilities.

Allowing preloading probably means some kind of work on the developer side (organizing the files in a certain way, I don't know) that Ubi didn't have time to implement, given how recent the feature is.

Simply the first game that will go gold after the feature was finalized. It's like how they updated the 360 to have permanent patches, but it took a while for the first game to use it (Rock Band 3, iirc) to show up.

to be honest i was expecting this. I think cause the fall games will have the features built into them or whatever. or maybe cause watch dogs does not need 1.7 and the fall games do

If they don't upload the pre-order option for the PS4 version with today's store update ,I am afraid Watch dogs EU launch day is 28th ( Wednesday ) .Am I right?

Man the wheels some people have to turn to blame this on Ubisoft are astounding. There are a handful of major releases coming before Destiny, including Sony first party titles, that aren't doing it either. Maybe, just maybe, this is on Sony's end.

Why would they NOT want to allow for preloading? It boggles the mind.

Exactly, it's so idiotic. Let's make everyone download it on release day and stress out the servers and bandwidth instead.

Would you really want to preorder with the way digital prices are over here?!

I still can't purchase Transistor from the PSN AU store (I've got credit I need to use up otherwise it's PSN US for life).

That is a bit ...well crap to be honest, but then why pay MORE for a digital Release than a Physical one?

Untill there is at the least a £10 difference in he right direction then I will be very hesitant of using DL games (aside Indie stuff) which is the main reason I think Sony and MS have all the indie love to push Cheap Store sales.

Long term convenience?

Afraid of another GTA 5 like situation ?
This is probably the opposite of what you want. You'd want to start it with games like Transistor that are lower profile, or Last of Us where your grand spoiler accomplishments will be stuff everyone knew or could have known about for months. That way you can iron out the process and have something new, huge, and high profile be kept under lock and key properly.

It's on the developers end.

This is a little disappointing because I pre-ordered and paid for the digital version thinking that I would be able to have it ready to play on the 27th. I'm in China with shitty net connection so now I will probably have to wait at least 3 days before I can play it.

Yeah, I know. First world problems haha

Lol.. Them why did they taunt this feature in the update? Like I just read in another thread, this is ridicularious .
